The song's title refers to Jeux sans frontières, a long-running TV show broadcast in several European countries. Teams representing a town or city in one of the participating countries would compete in games of skill, often while dressed in bizarre costumes. While some games were simple races, others allowed one team to obstruct another. The British version was titled It's a Knockout-words that Gabriel mentions in the lyrics. source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_Without_Frontiers_(song)

Wrong! "Jeux sans frontières (pronounced [ʒø sɑ̃ fʁɔ̃tjɛʁ]; "Games Without Borders" in French) was a Europe-wide television game show, based on the French programme Intervilles which was first broadcast in 1962. In its original conception, it was broadcast from 1965 to 1999 under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which owned the format. In non French-speaking countries, the show had alternative titles.[a] It is also widely known as It's a Knockout, the title of the BBC's domestic version and national selection for the programme. "

@@theamalgamatedtheory ""Games Without Frontiers" is a song written and recorded by English rock musician Peter Gabriel. It was released on his 1980 self-titled solo album, where it included backing vocals by Kate Bush. The song's lyrics are interpreted as a commentary on war and international diplomacy being like children's games." So what?

I’ve been down w/ this little classic since its release in the 80s… ❤️🤍💙. However… It was FX’s The Americans that brought me back here… 🫶🏻🙌👍🏻✊🏻✌️🤘🏻💪🏻🙏‼️‼️‼️ If you go back and listen to the song a number of times, though, you’ll find that Peter is [subliminally] referencing the Cold War. And like the Cold War, where the two superpowers-USA 🇺🇸 and USSR-never locked horns directly, but confronted each other via Third World client states AND their NATO/Warsaw Pact bandwagon coalitions… 1.) The names allude to those 3rd party states: -Hans and Adolf (Germany 🇩🇪), -Lotte (Portugal 🇵🇹 (?)) -Jane (Canada 🇨🇦 (?)) -Willi (Netherlands 🇳🇱 (?)) -Suki (Japan 🇯🇵(?)) -Leo (Belgium 🇧🇪(?)) -Sacha, Czech Republic 🇨🇿 or Slovakia 🇸🇰 (??)), -Britt (GB 🇬🇧), -Enrico (Spain 🇪🇸, and/or Latin America), -Andre (France 🇫🇷, w/ the “red flag alluding to French socialist leanings as well as “non-conformity” to NATO doctrine!!!), -Chiang Ching (China 🇨🇳, and [her] “coercion” into the affairs of Macau 🇲🇴 and Hong Kong 🇭🇰, w/ the “blue flag” concealing [her] TRUE Maoist-Stalinist intentions for the latter two), -Lin Tai Yu (Taiwan 🇹🇼(?); the “all have hills to fly them [flags] on except for […]” represents “Chiang Chung’s” efforts to alienate AND ostracize “Lin Tau Yu” UNLESS [she] gets in line with Maoist “party lines”!!!); 2.) The other lyrics seem to refer to the general workings OF the Cold War, or affecting the “movement of the pieces on the chess ♟️ board: -Baboons in the jungle (not being racist, but COULD allude to Africa in general), -Dunes by the seaside (possibly a sorta “cajoling” to the Arab World/Middle East), -Whistling tunes (Possibly trying to curry favor with India 🇮🇳, SE Asia, and Oceania), -Dressing up in costumes (obviously, the military uniforms of all the military forces involved), -Playing silly game(e.g., these “silly games” COULD refer to Cold War events like… A.) The Korean War, B.) The Berlin Wall, C.) The Vietnam War, D.) The Contra-Sandinista Affair, E.) The Falkland Islands 🇫🇰 War… …and other conflicts involving involving superpowers’ client states or what could be called “expendable proxies”, -Hiding out in tree tops (everyone involved just taking a “wait and watch” stance, not wanting to the “SOB who starts WWIII”!!!), -Shouting out rude names (there’s always gonna be SOMEONE who’s gonna provoke the “other guys” into “making the first move or throwing the first punch”!!!), -IT’S A KNOCKOUT…(Mutually Assured Destruction, No Winners…End of Debate(???)!!!)!!! & finally… 3.) She’s so popular- -Death…in the Cold War, it was the lucky ones who’d die FIRST and FAST; -Famine…the unlucky ones who SLOWLY and PAINFULLY (e.g., the famine crisis in sub-Saharan Africa, esp. Ethiopia 🇪🇹!!!); -Pestilence…referring to the AIDS/HIV crisis AND the precursor to the War On Drugs (e.g., the crack epidemics of 1983 and 1986, and the effects they had on the social order; ESPECIALLY within certain ethnic communities in the USA 🇺🇸 ⚠️⚠️⚠️) -WAR (aka, “she…”)…in the words of Lex Luther- “Nobody WANTS war, but it’s just more PROFITABLE to keep the ‘threat’ alive.”

LYRIC ALERT: In the album version it's "Whistling tunes we piss on the goons in the jungle". It is an anti-war song after all. Only the single version uses "Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle", which makes no sense, but it is radio friendly.

@@kimjones1303 Monsieur Gabriel gave us plenty to speculate about; so how about Enrico referencing Enrico Fermi, the architect of the atomic bomb that was the finale to Adolf's "bonfire"? If he had wanted to follow the fascist link, it could have been; "Adolf builds a bonfire / Benito plays with it" As in Benito Mussolini, or "Il Duce" if you prefer. My money is on Fermi Meanwhile I'm guessing the line "Jane plays with Willi / Willi is happy again"? is somewhat lost on most here.

That's Kate Bush singing in French, Jeux Sans Frontieres, Games without Frontiers. Better to be like little children playing on the beach than needlessly killing each other in wars trying to expand frontiers, like the Germans tried in World War II

That is exactly what I thought it was. It came as some surprise (although it all fell into place) that it is actually "jeux sans frontiers" = French for Games Without Frontiers, the name of a Pan-European televised sports tournament, known as It's a Knockout in the UK, compulsive viewing in the 1970s when I was in my adolescence.

So much to unpack - the reference to the Runequest Fantasy Role Playing Game (kissing baboons), the Euro TV series 'Games without frontiers' aired in the UK as "it's a knockout", and in France as 'jeux sans frontiers' the references to the stupid politics in the Olympics...
