The song's title refers to Jeux sans frontières, a long-running TV show broadcast in several European countries. Teams representing a town or city in one of the participating countries would compete in games of skill, often while dressed in bizarre costumes. While some games were simple races, others allowed one team to obstruct another. The British version was titled It's a Knockout-words that Gabriel mentions in the lyrics. source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_Without_Frontiers_(song)

I’ve been down w/ this little classic since its release in the 80s… ❤️🤍💙. However… It was FX’s The Americans that brought me back here… 🫶🏻🙌👍🏻✊🏻✌️🤘🏻💪🏻🙏‼️‼️‼️ If you go back and listen to the song a number of times, though, you’ll find that Peter is [subliminally] referencing the Cold War. And like the Cold War, where the two superpowers-USA 🇺🇸 and USSR-never locked horns directly, but confronted each other via Third World client states AND their NATO/Warsaw Pact bandwagon coalitions… 1.) The names allude to those 3rd party states: -Hans and Adolf (Germany 🇩🇪), -Lotte (Portugal 🇵🇹 (?)) -Jane (Canada 🇨🇦 (?)) -Willi (Netherlands 🇳🇱 (?)) -Suki (Japan 🇯🇵(?)) -Leo (Belgium 🇧🇪(?)) -Sacha, Czech Republic 🇨🇿 or Slovakia 🇸🇰 (??)), -Britt (GB 🇬🇧), -Enrico (Spain 🇪🇸, and/or Latin America), -Andre (France 🇫🇷, w/ the “red flag alluding to French socialist leanings as well as “non-conformity” to NATO doctrine!!!), -Chiang Ching (China 🇨🇳, and [her] “coercion” into the affairs of Macau 🇲🇴 and Hong Kong 🇭🇰, w/ the “blue flag” concealing [her] TRUE Maoist-Stalinist intentions for the latter two), -Lin Tai Yu (Taiwan 🇹🇼(?); the “all have hills to fly them [flags] on except for […]” represents “Chiang Chung’s” efforts to alienate AND ostracize “Lin Tau Yu” UNLESS [she] gets in line with Maoist “party lines”!!!); 2.) The other lyrics seem to refer to the general workings OF the Cold War, or affecting the “movement of the pieces on the chess ♟️ board: -Baboons in the jungle (not being racist, but COULD allude to Africa in general), -Dunes by the seaside (possibly a sorta “cajoling” to the Arab World/Middle East), -Whistling tunes (Possibly trying to curry favor with India 🇮🇳, SE Asia, and Oceania), -Dressing up in costumes (obviously, the military uniforms of all the military forces involved), -Playing silly game(e.g., these “silly games” COULD refer to Cold War events like… A.) The Korean War, B.) The Berlin Wall, C.) The Vietnam War, D.) The Contra-Sandinista Affair, E.) The Falkland Islands 🇫🇰 War… …and other conflicts involving involving superpowers’ client states or what could be called “expendable proxies”, -Hiding out in tree tops (everyone involved just taking a “wait and watch” stance, not wanting to the “SOB who starts WWIII”!!!), -Shouting out rude names (there’s always gonna be SOMEONE who’s gonna provoke the “other guys” into “making the first move or throwing the first punch”!!!), -IT’S A KNOCKOUT…(Mutually Assured Destruction, No Winners…End of Debate(???)!!!)!!! & finally… 3.) She’s so popular- -Death…in the Cold War, it was the lucky ones who’d die FIRST and FAST; -Famine…the unlucky ones who SLOWLY and PAINFULLY (e.g., the famine crisis in sub-Saharan Africa, esp. Ethiopia 🇪🇹!!!); -Pestilence…referring to the AIDS/HIV crisis AND the precursor to the War On Drugs (e.g., the crack epidemics of 1983 and 1986, and the effects they had on the social order; ESPECIALLY within certain ethnic communities in the USA 🇺🇸 ⚠️⚠️⚠️) -WAR (aka, “she…”)…in the words of Lex Luther- “Nobody WANTS war, but it’s just more PROFITABLE to keep the ‘threat’ alive.”

@ariadnestardust3872 Жыл бұрын

Well thats disappointing, I spent the last 21 years thinking the intro said "She's so funky, yeah"

Does anyone else have visions of "Lord of the Flies" when listening to this song?

We used to whistle this in Nicaragua. 1986. Always makes me cry now. How we were clueless about what was really going on there and here in good old murica.

The song is not about a gameshow... it's in reference to the olympics; and how adults act like children over silly games.. but the lyric "it's a knockout" did come from the gameshow
