My music teacher showed us this song in fifth grade, and I fell in love with it instantly. At that time in my life, everything was so good, with nothing to worry about besides homework, yet I still related to the sadness of this song. I'm 27 years old now, and for the past five years, my mom has been battling cancer. Mercy Street pops into my head whenever we hear bad news, or when I'm waiting for hours in a cold hospital room, while they run countless test on her. No other song relates with my sadness. This song is beautiful, and agonizing at the same time, and in a way, so is my pain.

Whether you have true words, or not, there's no judgment on this plane, the man's a legend.

This song is based on the book of poems of the same name by Anne Sexton. An American mental patient, she wrote as a form of therapy. Gabriel was impressed that she wrote entirely for herself rather than an audience. Sexton made five suicide attempts, the fifth being successful: She died of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1974. The title came from Anne Sexton's 1969 play Mercy Street. She was also working on a poem similarly titled "45 Mercy Street" at the time of her death. Gabriel could relate to Sexton as a deep thinker with a troubling depression who searches for meaning through her art. He used the image of darkness on Mercy Street to signal her depression. The end of this song was very intense when Gabriel performed it during live shows, where he used a high-pitched wail to simulate Sexton's death.

When the mercylessness of my days, my suffering gets too much. This song helps me, I always started to cry. It feels like a deep warm hug from somthing out there, that gives me love, mercy, grace. @@PatrickCallahan-pw2up While I'm not a vegan, I will tell this story because it deals with mice. I worked in research labs for many years. We'd have to go down to the "mouse room" and snip off little bits of their tails to do PCR on the tissue to see which were genetically modified for our research. It was traumatizing for me- I can't imagine what it was like for the mice. Sometimes, if we didn't get DNA we'd have to snip more off the poor mouse. Then, once, we sedated a mouse in order to perfuse it. This is a process in which we insert a tube into its heart to replace its blood with a substance that permeates the brain so that we can cut ultra thin slices of it to see if our genetic modifications were making any changes in the structure of the brain. Well, once a mouse woke up mid-perfusion. I cannot imagine the pain it suffered. I ran from the room in tears and refused to ever work in labs that killed any animals again.

To all our surprise, the next morning. He was alive and he spoke for the first time in a week. The last words he spoke, were, " Peter you are my son and I love you." I NEVER HEARD HIM SPEAK THOSE WORDS. He lived for 1 more week in palliative care. While I held his hand I whispered in his ear, " Dad don't be afraid the lord wants you." He took his last breath. I played this song mercy street at least twenty times a day for those two weeks as he was in the hospital. Thank you mister Gabriel

I am so glad you got that time with your dad before he passed , and that you blessed him with your words “ it’s ok dad , the Lord wants you “ Truely touching and selfless ! God bless you . I’m coming up on my dad’s third Heavenly anniversary this August the 8th , and though I miss him dearly , I know that the Lord said it was time for to come home 🙏❤️ Blessings to you and your family Peter 🙏

What I love about this song is how quiet it is. It's like a whisper. It's difficult to incorporate silence effectively into a song since sound is all you have to work with but Peter pulls it off. The director must have picked up on this because the video has a similar feel. The visuals are minimal, without colour, and often out of focus. It uses darkness similarly to how silence is used in the song itself. It's perfect.

There are only a handful of people who are taken back to the place & time this song takes me… 1969, night time, Vietnam, across a dirt road from rice paddies where the Vietcong were attacking from under cover of darkness. We got air support from a AC130 gunship - dropping parachute flares which created a very eerie light over the rice paddies. These gunships were armed with “mini guns” that poured out an incredible number of machine gun rounds with red tracer rounds - it really did resemble “red rain”. So glad I was on the other side of the road.

For me, the song is about the innocence of young lives, barely lived. A nostalgia for that time of purity and peace, to be safe "in your daddy's arms again". But life has been lived. Mistakes have been made. And so we dream of receiving mercy / Mercy Street. Where mistakes are forgiven, where hurting, grieving souls are treated with compassion and kindness. the song is a blessing, really.

62 this year. Gradually learning. Looking back I see that I didn't know or understand very much at all, at the time. Try to take a step back, whenever you can. See yourself from the stalls, not as an actor on the stage. Music has been a thread that has permeated all through my life, giving meaning. Often years later. Give love to all living things. Value truth, honesty, and friendship. Above all, be humble. Turn your back on wealth, power, and false praise. Do not submit to base desire and the temptations of the ego. Fear nought, for there is nought to fear, but fear itself. Nothing can harm you, but the fear of harm can hold you back. We are blessed Souls; beyond harm, following each other home. This is only a spontaneous comment. I simply offer what little I have learned. There are many paths to wisdom. Find your path and follow it. May you meet and be supported by many kind fellow travellers on your journey. Arrive at your destination safely. May you find peace and love.

This song is based on Anne Sexton's death. She was a poet with a sad life and a sad relationship with her father. Her poem that shocked PG was "45 Mercy Street". Anne Sexton committed suicide, her fifth attempt, in 1974 (she threw down a glass of vodka and went into the garage, shut all the doors, started up the car, and died of carbon monoxide inhalation). She was 46. Anne Sexton's work is very dark. The song uses a brazilian northest rhythm, according with Djalma Corrêa, the brazilian percusionist, in this song. The video was directed by Matt Mahurin. It's very dark...like a tribute for Anne. FYI: The song is listed on "10 Most Depressing Songs Ever"....from NME

UGH. I've read through these posts and I am saddened that for such a beautiful song there is, also, much hateful, ugly, dissent. This song helped me get through a really shitty marriage; many years passed. It has, since, helped me through chemotherapy of my second wife; who is now dearly departed. I guess I have no room for dissent and angst. Pray for mercy and peace of mind. "In the arms of the father."

+LJ Langston It seems the song gives the idea that mercy is obtainable from a specific place. Michael Nuccitellli (above) got the idea that the author of this message is one that respects isolation in times of spiritual grief or trial. Michael disagrees with our desires to want isolation during struggle times. But our Father God wills for us to separate ourselves from the norm and general flow of people in our lives, to bow before Him in prayer, to present ourselves before Him in our most humblest state, repentant and sincerely looking to Him for mercy. We need mercy every day of our lives, because we were all conceived in sin, inherited from the time of Eden, "For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous." Romans 5:19 So we need that time of isolation to be with the Father and the Son, through the Spirit. Without His mercy, we're dead in spirit.

+Sandra Papuni Nah, Peter got inspiration after reading poems from Anne Saxton. She was a mental ward patient who attempted suicide 5 times, and would always picture herself in differente places, in different realities. But, a song is good when you can take many interpretations out of it.

Looking down on empty streets All she can see Are the dreams all made solid Are the dreams made real All of the buildings All of the cars Were once just a dream In somebody's head She pictures the broken glass Pictures the steam She pictures a soul With no leak at the seam Let's take the boat out Wait until darkness Let's take the boat out Wait until darkness comes Nowhere in the corridors Of pale green and gray Nowhere in the suburbs In the cold light of day There in the midst of it So alive and alone Words support like bone Dreaming of Mercy Street Wear you're inside out Dreaming of mercy In your daddy's arms again Dreaming of Mercy Street I swear they moved that sign Dreaming of mercy In your daddy's arms Pulling out the papers From the drawers that slide smooth Tugging at the darkness Word upon word Confessing all the secret things In the warm velvet box To the priest, he's the doctor He can handle the shocks Dreaming of the tenderness The tremble in the hips Of kissing Mary's lips Dreaming of Mercy Street Wear you're inside out Dreaming of mercy In your daddy's arms again Dreaming of Mercy Street I swear they moved that sign Looking for mercy In your daddy's arms Mercy, mercy Looking for Mercy Street Looking for mercy Mercy Looking for mercy Looking for mercy Looking for mercy Oh, looking for mercy Looking for mercy Anne, with her father Is out in the boat Riding the water Riding the waves on the sea

It is always difficult when the ones we love leave this world. But, in essence, that's all it really is. Your father may not be here in the flesh any longer, but the soul of him is still very much alive. The love you still feel in your heart for him is the very proof of it. No one ever really dies; we simply go home, back to where we originally came from, back to the Source of all things. Your father is ever with you. Take comfort in knowing that you will see him again, in time. Namaste

All I can say is that Peter Gabriel has always made music I can listen to when I am sad, so it is heartening to me that others feel the same way. I went to high school with Anne's daughters. She did a poetry reading at school and I had to leave the assembly. That was unheard of in the 60s and I caught hell for it. The words she spoke were like knives cutting into my flesh, so sharp and morbid! It was an awakening for me & not a pleasant one. I had been raped by my father from 5 years old & up. I didn't understand the ramifications that this would have on my entire life. I put those memories into the back of my mind, totally forgotten, until I was in my 40s, when I met a little 4 year old who had the same thing done to her. I had never understood how "suppressed" memories could be a real thing. I was *wrong!* I wanted to find Anne's daughter, who was a year younger than me, to ask how her Mother's mental illness had affected her. My life had been a nightmare. Linda had written an autobiography. She had a horrific life, due to Anne's illnesses, an unspeakable life. I was grateful for my miserable life in comparison & that my daughter's life had only been touched in small ways. Ways that still come up in discussions to this day! Mental illness is something very real. Most people are only harmful to themselves. But, if severe enough, there is much harm done to everyone in the orbit. I am 69, now, and am finally free of the guilt *I had for what happened to me!* That is a long lifetime of sadness.

Dear. I know what you are talking about. I was not physically raped but my parents were alcoholics And when my mother got drunk she became extremely sadistic verbally. I remember her near my bed, when I was 6. She was like a black cloud, silent and dark for some moments. And then came the storm. Her eyes were mad , she begun to cast my toys with rage and her words to me, spitted out and full of extreme, adult hate. I m 46 and I still remember the dates when my father got his salary twice a month. And these days I was dizzy at school and had nuisea cos I knew what awaited me in the evening. Hours of psychic torture, when I was forbidden to go to bed. I had to sit on a hard stool in the little kitchen and hear terrible things...as if I was her worst enemy. She was out of her mind, conscious less but awake. My heart went in high rate in hours from terror and pain. My father was full but he slept...and he didnt care. Next morning she could not remember much. My brother killed himself... I felt nothing when my parents died. I never visited their graves. my life went wry. Abusive men. Hard work. Invalidity. Things, which people just have and never think about , take them for granted like sleep, family , warmth, protection, home... I have a little home and cats, some money and freedom now. But Ill never be where I have to be.

@@corentinmarseu536 Unfortunately, I recently found out that Anne Sexton was physically violent to her husband and two daughters, and sexually abused her elder daughter. Now I can't listen to this song anymore, I just feel so sickened. 😿 (To be fair, Peter Gabriel would not have known about these horrific revelations at the time of writing and releasing this song, as Diane Middlebrook's biography of Sexton, and the daughter Linda Gray Sexton's own autobiography, came out in the '90s.) Anne herself believed she had uncovered repressed memories of having been sexually abused as a child by her own father. The lyric "In your daddy's arms again" holds a much darker meaning for me now... Ugh - the poetry of tortured souls, indeed.

This song is actually really hard to listen to I actually can’t even if I’m feeling even a little sad or it just emotionally hits me to hard. Get chills every time I hear it the song has the power to silence a loud room as everyone is just drawn into it completely mesmerized by it’s incredible atmosphere, it’s lyrics are just vague enough that everyone can interpret it there own way but not to vague as to make no sense or confuse people. The instrumentals fit it perfectly and you really feel it within your soul. Never experienced anything like this song from any other artist and it truly boggles my mind every time I hear it
