Brilliant review of a brilliant album, thank you! You're right, he does still sound fantastic; hearing how great his voice sounded on his recent tour was nothing short of astonishing. I've been waiting for this album for so long, and am so happy that it doesn't disappoint for a moment.

I was happy to hear his voice in fine form on the tour and on the album. When I saw him with Sting in 2016 he didn't sound that great; I'm assuming it was just a bad night for him.

Excellent review here my friend explained in a way I only wish I could have done myself. I think you got the tone, reverence and respect spot on and really enjoyed this one. Thanks for this. All the best. Dave✅✅

@@RhymeSignatures Playing with time... So beautiful. I don't listen to PG that much (may have to do with the number of releases 😁) but he is still somehow the soundtrack of my life. Great review by the way.

100% agreed, though I had the pleasure to already get a listen to six of the new songs during the I/O-show in June. Listening to the whole album in one sitting still really does make a huge difference - plus: the great inside-mix!

It's a great record, and your review echoes much of my sentiment. I kind of knew I would get a lot from it even before the 1st tracks were released per the history with this record goes back even before UP was released in 2002. The only issue was, Peter himself didn't feel comfortable releasing it per he felt he couldn't sing the songs in the desired range. He talked about this in an interview that I passed on in my blog I want to say maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Before that among the remix and covers albums he did, it seemed like it was never destined to come out. But, thankfully something changed for him. But I also kind of already was enjoying it from the early singles I only sampled a few times, and then especially seeing him live for the 1st time back in September where he played most of the record. My biggest issue is the differing mixes hurts my overall feeling on how to look at it. I, like you, and maybe many, have gone with the Bright Side Mixes as the default. But over time, I'm not sure, or I may mix and match, It's both creative and yet a little harder to consider as-a-whole. I suppose fine tuning 1 full version will be best to do, but initially it makes me unclear fully how often I will listen to it right now.

Yeah, the multiple mixes are a little frustrating, I do wonder if I should have reviewed the dark side version or not, but I guess that's going to be saved for the big deep dives of the record! The history surrounding the conception of the record is honestly fascinating, and only adds to the intrigue of Peter Gabriel as an artist ❤️

Entertaining and thoughtful review, well expressed. Love the Suppers Ready quotes in the intro, perhaps to highlight how far his lyrics have come? Has anyone ever told you how much you look like Trick of the Tail era Phil Collins?

Loved the Willow Farm reference in your intro, and also a fair bit of the verbose nonsense (and the Axl Rose dig) :) I did the same as you and waited to listen until release. Still haven't had time to listen to the 'Dark Side' mixes but looking forward to that. I've been a musician all my life, playing jazz and studying classically, and I have been listening to Gabriel (and lots of prog, jazz, and many other things) for over 20 years. I was prepared to be disappointed by this record after 'Up' (which was fine, but I didn't love) and after hearing Yes's more recent offerings, etc. and was pleasantly surprised. I think I agree with your opinion that i/o is his strongest since III (Melt). 'Playing for Time' drew tears and knocked my socks off and is probably my instant favorite from the first listen. 'Live and Let Live' was very welcome also at this particular time of my own (mid-)life. I pre-ordered physical on this (CDs due to price of the other sets with multiple mixes) but after listening, I may end up also getting vinyl later on when the budget allows. Beautifully-written review, thank you for that. You picked up a subscriber.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate such a well thought out comment :) I've got the bright side vinyl on order myself, might pick up the dark side too once I've listened to it a bit more on streaming? But at £40 a piece, maybe not 🤣

For me, it's a sort of mix of Us and Up, which makes perfect sense considering it's history. Great album, personally, I love Up but this may be even better. Passion will always be my favourite but of the vocal albums this is definitely right up there with his best.

It's definitely a wonderful summary of his musical history! A perfect capstone really

@@RhymeSignatures Totally agree but with around 150 songs in progress, apparently, hopefully this won't be his last. 👍
