I'm convinced that Celtic Frost's "Cold Lake" would have done much better if they had used their old logo and not included any band photos. Certainly a flawed album, but some of the tracks are pretty good. "(Once) They Were Eagles" is very heavy and "Downtown Hanoi" has a bit of a Bowie feel to it. As for Iron Maiden's X-Factor", it has really grown on me over the years, despite not being among their best releases. It's atmospheric, gloomy, and contains some epic songs like "Fortunes Of War" and "The Sign Of The Cross". I also really like that Cro-Mags album as well. Take care!

Another one that usually makes it to those lists is Entombed's Same Difference. Not a good album for sure, but it has its moments. Kick in the Head is a good song for what it is. Groovy! 1. Agreed 2. Given what I thought of the more things change, I'm glad I never listened. 3. Never listened to it. 4. Don't know any of their stuff. 5. Never listened to it. 6. It was my favourite Slayer album for a while after it came out. It showed the nu-metal 💩 how it was supposed to be played and every song has some sort of a guitar solo. It hasn't aged well but it's still an album I like. The Slayer album I like least is God Hates Us All because, while it contains some classic songs, there is too much filler on the album with songs that sound like they're trying to appeal to the nu-metal trend that put me off listening to new bands at the time. 7. I think I listened to it once and didn't like it. 8. Never listened to them. Don't think I'll ever go out of my way to get into them. 9. Never got into them because I hate when metal bands don't bother with guitar solos. Especially when they are more than capable of them. 10. As an album, very disappointing by Iron Maiden standards. But some individual songs would have been very good if reworked and some work well in the live set with Bruce singing them, like Sign Of The Cross. Blaze and Janick wrote my favourite song on the album, Man On The Edge, but it and the rest of the album was let down by the weak, twangy rhythm guitar sound that didn't have enough overdrive/distortion. There were also overly long and slow intros to too many songs that would have made more of an impact if they got straight into it. But I got used to listening to it in rotation because I converted the tape to mp3 so I could always listen through the headphones on my phone. So it's not as bad as I thought when I first bought the tape in 1996.

I agree with the comment about how frequently you listen to an album reveals how much you like or dislike it. That being said, I like St. Anger more than Reload. I just can't get in the mood to listen to Reload front to back. St Anger actually works for me in the gym when I'm pissed, and I listen to it eery time from front to back. The songs are bloated - they could all be cut to 4-5 min, and the tinny snare drum sound is grating, but there are many good heavy riffs and Hetfield sounds pissed. So I throw this in occasionally to my rotation when I'm pissed,

I'm a Cold Lake defender. For context, I was 17 when it came out. I was listening to mostly traditional metal and thrash and was getting into the albums that started death metal but I also listened to some glam metal like Mötley Crüe and Poison. I was familiar with some of Celtic Frost's songs but wasn't a fan yet. To me Cold Lake sounded like a decent glam metal album with heavier guitars. I still have a copy of it to this day. I liked the Blaze Bailey Maiden albums. For me No Prayer For The Dying was the lowest point in their discography. By the time Diabolus In Musica came out I think I was getting fed up with the metal scene. The metal I grew up with was mostly gone and while there were still some good albums being released it didn't feel the same and I was ready to move on. Diabous is a good album but it didn't connect with me at the time and I think I interpreted that as me not liking it. I listen to it quite often now. I haven't changed my mind on St Anger though. I bought it on release day and could only listen to it once. The DVD of Metallica playing the songs live in the studio that came with it was actually better. I've tried listening to it several times over the years but I just don't like it. I agree that Lulu isn't really a Metallica album. In the context of it being a Lou Reed album featuring Metallica though I actually quite like it.

St. Anger sounds unfinished. Half way there. Like a demo CD of unloaded angst spewed out, waiting to be trimmed, toned and tightned up. Imagine some 80s esque Hammet soloing, give it a huge Black Album sized production, edit the songs length down. Make "Invisible Kid" dissapear. I respect and understand what was going on all within the band's hands and out of their control as they were trying to record it. Its 'supposed" to sound messed up, unhinged and raw, as thats how the actual vibe was in the studio. Alas, it is also unfocused, meandering and repeatitive. Again, like how they felt at the time.😂 I think there is a really good album in there beyond the rattling walls of untuned snaredrums and grubby riffs. Played live, the songs sound very different. Tighter, more together. Better.

World painted Blood by - Slayer is beneath them! I think the song Amerika is the only song worth a damn.

My friend claims St Anger is not that bad once you listen to it a few times and get into it. But like the Metal Bloke here I cannot even get through a single listen.

Weird cause ghosts 2nd and 3rd albums are the only ones i like in their discography... i didn't realize people didn't like their sophomore album.

Diabolus in Musica bangs compared to absolute wreck that was Repentless Also, if you want more insane Celtic Frost stuff you can only listen to on youtube, check out the weird, weird EP/demo from 2002 called ''Prototype''. It's almost universally hated but its a demo for a reason. And that reason is because its weird electronic hip-hop and Tom G is rapping his butt off.

You made a perfect point, and I also always repeat the same: the main issue with St. Anger is not the poor production/mixing, because a lot of metal albums (especially from 80's or 90's) are not well produced, nonetheless great riffs and songs on them compensate for this. Unfortunately this is not the case with St. Anger. The album just suffers terribly from a lack of good/worthy musical ideas. Most riffs sounds very forced, coarse and uninspired. The same applies to lyrics - most of them are awful. Only songs I somehow dig are the title track and The unnamed felling. Rest can go to a bin for me. Metallica is a great band. I justify this decline in creativity by the deep internal crisis they were undergoing then - the departure of Jason, addiction porblems of James, and ego problems of James and Lars.

Which part of the country are you taking your walks on? Just curious... Celtic Frost are one of my fav bands (Into the Pandemonium is in my Top 10 fav albums of all time), but yeah, Cold Lake is a hard one to love...

Infestissumam is better than the first album, it has a lot of variety which makes for an enjoyable listen. Ghuleh / Zombie Queen and Year Zero are two of Ghost's better songs

I know Scorpio Rising by Prong is the least fav of their catalog even Tommy the lead singer hates that album. But I'm one of the few that likes it. I'm also one of the 5 people on this planet to like Promise by Massacre. lol

When I am in a morose, unhealthy mindset, St Anger is one of the best albums to listen to. Some Kind of Monster, Dirty Window, Invisible Kid and Unnamed Feeling, are aggressive, unhinged and destructive songs. You can get swept up in the madness of yelling out the lyrics. The raw, unfiltered production style gives the songs a live, and unplanned vibe, which suits the dark themes. Even the predictable, repetitive song structures alude to a lack of care, an abandonement of artistic endeavour. These songs need to be expressed right fuckn now! When you are in an awful mood, feeling isolated but stuck with your own worst enemy yourself, then spinning a few tracks from St Anger will definitely see you through. As an end note, I think Frantic is one of the best songs Metallica has ever written and I can listen to it, whatever the weather within. It is an absolutely killer song to have cranking in the headsets when you are going for a run!

Totally agree with what you said about St Anger. That's the album that made me give up on Metallica. Bit surprised that Risk by Megadeth isn't here, but it could be argued that it's not a metal album, it's more of a rock album. And I kinda like it. Fight me. lol

Swansong is a way wicked album, and I stand by my original statement at the time that it's the best Megadeth album they never released.

honestly, I really like St.Anger. In fact, in school, we all loved it and were really suprised when we read that it was hated. I love the raw emotion and the heaviness of it. Sure, some parts could be shortened, the snare mixed a bit less loud, and vocals more "produced". But it's a 7/10 for me, with several songs I genuinely enjoy hering live. Also, not too much I could complain about on Supercharger either. Catharsis is sooo much worse. 7,5/10 Diabolus in musica is...fine. It's entertaining, but neither their best nor their worst ( that would be Repentless...what a boring album). I LOVE "Bitter Peace". 6,5/10 hot take: X Factor is among maidens best. I love the darker tone, several great songs, and I like the vocals. 9/10 one album that would be on my list: Judas Priest: Turbo. What a terrible album, no redeeming qualities. I never managed to listen to the whole things

Diabolis in Musica is a jamming album, just don’t try comparing it to Seasons or South of Heaven. As a stand alone, it’s pretty mean and has fucking teeth!💪🏻🤘🏻

In my opinion, "Cold lake" and "The X Factor" are both pretty good, provided one ignores the band name on the cover. "St. Anger" is half-baked. Some good ideas but the whole affair is really messy. "Diabolus in Musica" is B-O-R-I-N-G. That being said, I dig your list and your arguments.

Queensryche's Dedicated to Chaos, Motley Crue's Generation Swine, Danzig's Blackacidevil and Manowar's The Lord of Steel are worse than all of the albums on your list. P.S I wouldn't call Diabolous In Musica the least heavy Slayer album, Show No Mercy is decidedly their least heavy album (but still my favourite). It's the only album they have recorded in Standard E tuning and musically it's more of a NWOBHM album than thrash as the latter was still in infancy.
@andrewreday35192 ай бұрын
As a massive Queensryche fan I have to admit that "Dedicated To Chaos" is an absolute stinking pile of S#&T. i know how great they were back in the 80's but this album was a complete disaster from start to finish.
