Peter's music was life-changing for me as a musician. I drifted into progressive rock thanks to Rush, YES, Genesis and King Crimson. From there, it was Peter Gabriel's solo work after leaving Genesis that opened my ears and introduced me to World Music, diverse cultures and traditions, which is a dream for a young drummer. He innovated constantly through the 80s and everyone else followed in his footsteps. He was experimenting alot on his third album ( the melting face self-titled) the drums were all thunderous, gated toms and tbe guitar tracks were all chopped up and hard-panned left and right, vocals shrieking through a distortion box or singing into a blender. It was a mad album and it brought him into the heavy rhythms of Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. The follow up was 'Security' released in 1983 and this song , Shock the Monkey was the most commercial and weakest track on the album actually, the rest is devastating and powerful. I saw him in concert in Toronto in 1986, when I was 18 and working at a record store in a city 60 miles to the west. That tour was to promote his multiplatinum selling "So" album, which generated lots of hits. This song is from the album before that, which I actually preferred. His earlier work was even more experimental, which makes sense that he started out as the lead singer for the groundbreaking progressive band, Genesis.

Peter was the original singer for Genisis. Bass played by Tony Levin (who also played on Welcome To My Nightmare for Alice Cooper amungst many other things. Peter' studio videos became legendary. Big Time and Digging In The Dirt, oh, and Steam, amazing videos, yet, his live stage videos are equally amazing. And in live, he often highlights other singers and musicians, a very generous guy!!

Awe man, Peter Gabriel is a massive musical icon, starting in the 70's as lead man for Genesis - super prog rock stuff - till he left for a solo career that blossomed in late 70's through a peak in the mid 80's with some absolute chart topping banging awesome tunes, but always putting out amazing content - even as he gracefully aged into his later career. But late 70's to mid 80's Peter Gabriel - he was as good as it gets. So many amazing songs and wild music videos. He was at the top echelon for a bit there. This one's a classic...

Gabriel was a major creative driver of early Genesis, when he left Phil Collins took over. His solo career is monumental, he was an early MTV star with amazing innovative videos. But the quality of music and his use of world rhythms and musicians was awesome. Solsbury Hill you'd likely know, lots of other great song suggestions in the comments. But I'd suggest In Your Eyes, live from Secret World Tour...it has a feel and a presence that makes folks truly emotional...epic!

Peter has many songs on my greatest songs list. For Peter, I'd recommend Solsbury Hill, Games Without Frontiers, Big Time, Sledgehammer (number 1 on many people's greatest videos list and the most played video in MTV's history), Steam, Digging in the Dirt and side two of the Genesis album the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

My all time favorite artist. He is rabbit hole you would love to go down. Not sure why this was requested as a start, but he's gone through many phases (like a Bowie or Kate Bush). One of the most innovative songwriters, performers (incredible live) there has been. From his days with Genesis to last year's I/0 album. Brilliance, art and boundary pushing. There would be no Radiohead for instance (and countless others) without Peter Gabriel. BTW this song is about Jealousy... you're in the role of a Monkey in a relationship. You want to be instantly a fan... watch San Jacinto from the Secret World Live concert or Lay Your Hands on Me from the live in Athens 87 concert.

Try Solsbury Hill, which was the big hit from Gabriel's 1977 eponymous debut as a solo artist. I would be surprised if you hadn't heard it.
