I was 53 and never wanted to be married but we met in 2000 and married in 2003 and for twenty one years we shared a romance and a love that was better than love. I held her as she took her last breath and while time may forget that day my heart will always remember.

Lots of comments about how beautiful the song is and how great PG is, but I just want to comment on what a wholesome environment this comment section is. When 99.99% of comment sections are people picking fights with strangers and hating on each other, this wall of support, positivity, empathy and kindness is an oasis in a barren desert.

I listened to this wonderful song this morning at my bed radio at 05.11. Eighty years ago it was D-Day. So many young people gave their highest sacrifice for our liberation and freedom at the beaches and hills of Normandy. Their book of love was closed far too early. We can't be grateful enough to them.

During the pandemic, my girlfriend and I were living together and we would sing karaoke every night, and this song was one of our frequent "go to" songs. We were apart from May of 22 until Feb of 23, and then we broke up again November of 23, but we still spend time together. I can feel our hearts pulling us back together, god willing, and this song always makes me think of her. I love it when she reads to me.

I am not the crying kind. I have never cried while listening to a song. But listening to this song completely breaks me down, and I start to sob like a child. I suspect the reason I start to cry while listening to this song is because of the lines that speak of hope for love from someone. I am well past 60 and steadily heading towards old age, having never had the privilege of having someone fall in love with me. Love truly is for lucky people. Some of us are just not that lucky.

Yep, especially because what is Love without Wisdom or Wisdom without Love. You can Love foolishly and/or too easily which often leads to bad or at least empty relationships. You can be too Wisdom focused which can lead to excessive Logic which then leads to an empty Life. Therefore, you need both together for the best existence. You still need to be open to Love & Companionship yet temper it with Wisdom to prevent Foolish Loves/Relationships. Just like you need the Wisdom to understand that importance.

This song is melancholic for me. I discovered it in the aftermath of a horrible break up, that left me emotionally scarred and unable to find love again to this day. It was also around the time i discovered mushrooms, so there's a strange sadness and beauty associated with this song in my psyche, and for some reason i keep coming back.

Sorry for asking but did the pain of your break up ease? I am just the imprint of the person I was. I cannot derive real joy or pleasure from anything yet. I'm trying to stay busy but nothing really helps.

I just heard the original by Magnetic Fields in the Ordinary Love trailer and felt it was sweet and loving and thoughtful - I cried, and knew I needed to figure out who sang it. Lo and behold, I found this. Wow. The strings arrangement and the vocal harmony took it to a whole new level. Just beautiful.

Such a magical voice. Peter Gabriel is so unique when it comes to his songs. Red Rain is fantastic and his song Biko always reduces me to tears, just like this. There is also a different version, 2cellos and Zucchero where he sings in Italian. Definitely suits Zucchero's voice and worth listening to. Peter's voice is raw here, where Zucchero's is seductive and sublime.

This song is lovely. Someone actually feels this way, lovely. The book of love is long and boring No one can lift the damn thing It's full of charts and facts, and figures And instructions for dancing But I I love it when you read to me. And you You can read me anything. The book of love has music in it In fact that's where music comes from Some of it's just transcendental Some of it's just really dumb But I I love it when you sing to me And you You can sing me anything The book of love is long and boring And written very long ago It's full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes And things we're all too young to know But I I love it when you give me things And you You ought to give me wedding rings And I I love it when you give me things And you You ought to give me wedding rings You ought to give me Wedding rings

I don't agree with his thoughts on the book, but I loved how he turned this into a love song about his wife, he may not have understood the world, but he understood where his music came from and why. That inspires me to always look for ways to write a song about love in a new and different way in the back of my mind. Something had to spark him to write this song, and I imagine it was the sound of her voice comforting him. A really nice piece of music.

One of the best lyrics I ever heared and even with his voice which is really not the best in the whole world, it gives the whole piece even more character and strength. This is so simple...but breathtaking in the same moment, and that makes it iconic and legendary. And it still has the touch of laughter and deep emotion that results out of JD‘s finale in scrubs.

Exactly. This is the first time I noticed the song in shall we dance, I Have seen the movie several times though not the beginning. I hope that younger people might listen to this and see the movie, particularly the exchanges between Mr Gere and his wife in the film and see true love has nothing to do with trivial things, and learn the value of commitment, consistency and openness between the ones you love, understanding that if you don't grow together you will certainly grow apart or both become bitter unhappy with yourselves and each other love is to be nurtured and constantly cared for as it grows if not it will wither and die from neglect.
