I was born in 1951 and adopted into a Catholic family. I attended a parochial Catholic grade school from 1-8th grades. We were not taught anything about this but did study WW11. I attended a public high school and the Holocaust was only briefly studied. I knew it happened but, unfortunately as I am ashamed to admit, I had concentrated my focus on the United States participation during the war and not what the Jewish population in Europe had gone through. This is the 2nd video lecture I have listened to by the professor and there are 2 more that I intend to listen to and forward on to others who may not know the how, what, when, and why this absolutely horror to humanity could ever happen. It has also inspired me to speak loudly about any horrific tragedy that may be happening now. Thank you for putting this video on KZbin so those that want to know that we all need to do our part to prevent anything even remotely close to this Ever happening again. As I think on this tragedy I sit here shaking my head thinking and am ashamed that No One helped and were too self involved with their own agendas to stop this massacre. God forgive us all because we all share the responsibility of protecting mankind.

Dr Peter Hayes ; I'm grateful for you teaching this history, " denial " dulls the pain or outcome. But being unrealistic about the past only enables the inevitable to re-occur. 1 year ago I was browsing, today I'm reviewing given the facts that are going on currently .

I have listened to so many talks on the Holocaust. For any people it is important to investigate their own stories, however it is rarely put in any wider context. Many groups have faced extreme persecution, Jews faced very similar restrictions by pagan roman emperors to those imposed on them later. There must surely be some common patterns to such exclusion and persecution. Similarly what went wrong in Germany did not appear out of nothing, but came from a much earlier corruption of ideas and Christianity did not appear come into existence fully formed, but had deep roots in Jewish thought and history.

I believe if we, in the USA don't learn the ho'w and why's of these horrible actions (eg during the Holocaust), as a country, we are capable of repeating it. McCarthy-ism and Trump-ism are examples of manifested hatred of people groups. As long as people deny the humanity of their fellow man/woman (Jesus calls them our neighbors) we will be vulnerable to recreating these attrocities.

problem was when they appointed Hitler Chancellor they just thought he was a pushover they could control him they gave him a foothold and that's all he needed if Hindenburg would have been a younger man Hitler would have never got in there but Hindenburg was just getting old and senile the Great depression was another factor that Hitler got in there if the German economy would have been doing good Hitler would have never made it in there were things as bad as I was in the German economy Hitler still just about not made it in in office and even after he got in office he could have still been stopped when he sent German troops into the Rhineland in March 1936 Great Britain and friends could have easily moved on Hitler and occupied Germany remove Hitler from power never ever underestimate anyone Hans Linton bravely tried to stop Hitler if you could see right through him but hardly nobody wants to hear anything about something they might have to do something about

It's my understanding that, by 1938, it was reasonably well known what was happening, and even what was likely to happen, to German Jewry. In my view, the US ought to have taken--that is, allow and even assist to immigrate to the US--every German Jew who wished to do so. Was such a policy ever proposed or seriously considered?
@jaqatlantic

Prof. Hayes certainly addresses this question during the Q & A. But didn't ANYBODY in the US make the moral argument for such an immigration policy. I should have thought that even an economic argument could have been made.

A large part focuses on the HOW. The WHY review in the beginning I think is only scratching the surface. The “Make Germany Great Again” statement is very accurate and tremendously bold in the political environment of 2017. This analogy must be made, to a large extend Trump’s thinking went into that direction. Trump even did not refrain to try toppling democracy at the end, which puts him well in line with the Nazis. In 2017, when this presentation was held, nobody could anticipate that it will be going to be so bad and wrong. Ironically, Trump was very successful in middle east and therefore honored by Israelis. That peace was made with 2 Arab countries under his watch undoubtedly is a big achievement. This is striking me until today and I don’t know whether it was just an opportunistic situation or by chance having this Jewish Kushner in the family. To be honest, I myself never knew what to think about Obama, who ignored Israel and made very dangerous moves with Iran. Remarkable also the angry lady in the Q&A session, making reproaches of Peter Hayes being superficial but who seemed to be quite biased herself, spilling out some weird things about communism. Then to base her aggressive criticism on the introductory statement “sorry I was late” is quite inappropriate.

It is in History, that a certain country in South East Asea, played a very,very important role in the life of Jewish people & their country Israel.. it’s the “ PHILIPPINES” during the Holocaust.. Jewish people where fleeing & don’t know which or where country they are going to hide to be persecuted by Hitler, no one.. but no one in countries in Europe & other countries CLOSE THEIR DOOR TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE.. it was only the Philippines.. Yes the Philippines “Open Door” it was President Quezon of the Philippines who called Pres. Eisenhower of USA to send as many Jewish people to the Philippines, thousands of them so many souls were saved by the Filipino people & until now there is still the Jewish Settlement in Manila, Second, during the “ Creation of the STATE OF ISRAEL” at the United Nations in NY, the voting commence, it was a short of 3 votes again it was the Philippines in the person of ROMULO, the Permanent Representative(Ambassador) voted Yes.. for Israel. That’s why in Tel Aviv you will see there a “Monument of Froenship”dedicated to the Filipino people in gratitude that Philippines stood by side to help the Jewish people. They call the Philippines as “ Philippines a Safe Haven for Refugees” in 1949 thousands of White Russians fled from China to escape communism, the IRO ( International Refuggee Organization) wrote to other countries, but nobody accept White Russians only the Philippines responded with then President Quirino open the door for them to escape Chinese communism, they settled in Tubabao in Guian, Samar & up to present you can still see the settlement there. Again during the Vietnam War, the Philippines accepted Vietnamese refugees also there are still Vietnamese people still living in the settlement up to now & they don’t want to leave the Philippines. Philippines is a poor country they say, Philippines is a 3rd world country they say..& yet this is the only country accepted refugees. I hope that someday this rich countries will have a heart for the refugees people🙏

I'm a pro-Israel, pro-Jewish Catholic and a huge JBS fan. However, after seeing yet another selective hindsight, Catholic bashing, half truth rendition of Catholics in the Holocaust AGAIN (this time by Peter Hayes) I am deleting JBS from my favorites list. I've had enough of this. I have never heard a criticism of Lutherans, Calvinists,, Baptists, Eastern Orthodox, Mormons etc. perhaps because they aren't unified under one leader.. My Scottish Catholic grandfather fought the Nazis in North Africa where he was seriously wounded and crippled. The only people he hated more than Nazis were Arab Muslims who aided and abetted the Nazis while feigning to to be with the Allies. Dressed as civilians and smiling in the faces of the British they gave the Nazis any info they had. Good bye.
