Here's my fiery clash with Peter Hitchens, who is a passionate opponent of lockdown, which I think has been crucial in saving lives and preventing the NHS being overwhelmed. Peter thinks he destroyed my argument: judge for yourselves!

Expected additional life years changes over time, though. Life expectancy at birth being 81 doesn't mean that expected additional years at 82 is -1. Jones doesn't say "the average loss of expected additional years is 10", just that *people* are dying ten years before they should have done, which is certainly true.

Something being missed also is the gross neglect of NHS for decades, and same for health services across the EU. If we can't afford private insurance we are condemned to the public health sector, a black hole of ever increasing wage and administration cost that's not matched by the provision of care. Health services, politicians and middle to upper public service mandarins failed miserably before the virus, at the start of it, and then having flattened the curve, they sat back congratulating themselves and failed miserably again to prepare the country for the inevitable second wave. Hence this atrocious recession inducing lockdown and no other plan at all.

Hitchens is absolutely right. The panademic is largely a statistical matter and the figures are being manipulated by the government to make out the mortality rate is worse than it is. Only last week I spoke to a woman whose husband had died of cancer but got recorded as covid on the death certificate because he hadn't been tested and doctors couldn't be certain it wasn't a covid death. Even so if the excess deaths were accurate, does x1.2 excess deaths in the UK really warrant the hundreds of billions spent on lockdowns? Not only are we plunging the UK into poverty we're condemning hundreds of thousand of children to death in developing countries who rely on foreign aid which the western governments will no longer be able to afford.

Science usually builds on science which has gone before, the stuff I rely on is no exception - it build on electron microscopy, PCR and what was/is known about SARS, MERS and the 4 human common cold coronaviruses. i like the way owen starts with a lie, to bolster his credibility (implying he's against the lockdown). the issue is this: do you feel competent enough to make the decision to go outside, or do you feel that you need the government to tell you when you are allowed outside and where you are allowed to go and for how long? i see this whole thing as a by product of the destruction of masculine culture. there are people in our society who would happily let the government completely control every aspect of their existence, similar to how a certain European people did in the last century ( the 'i was only following orders' mentality). i wish they would realise how dangerous they are to the rest of us.

So how do you account for the numerous pictures of empty supermarket shelves before lockdown? People were buying more than usual in preparation to self isolate and work from home. My own workplace told us all to stop coming into the office two weeks before lockdown, and many people I know reported the same. Various gigs and concerts were cancelled before lockdown, and pubs where I live were empty despite remaining open. It's not even an opinion, it's a demonstrable fact that any intelligent person could clearly see with their own eyes. Sounds like you're the one talking nonsense mate
