Our education system over the last fifty years has been designed to provide compliant non-questioning Sheeple. I was lucky to go to a grammar school 55 years ago where we were taught to think, analyse, challenge, debate and come up with a solution. Sadly now we just produce unthinking robots.

@Gavin Lisle The humanities includes both history, law and philosophy - these subjects absolutely can and do encourage and develop critical thinking. The problem in the education system isn't a case of STEM vs Humanities, it's not what they teach so much as HOW they teach it - simply put, schools have been briefed to create a compliant workforce. It's nothing new, I know plenty of old timers who are unable to think for themselves.

I was taught to think at school by the teacher who taught me Ancient Greek (he recently died in his 90s; he was an emeritus Professor of Latin at the University of Illinois). I’m now an emeritus Professor of civil engineering at one of the Russell universities in the UK, which only goes to show that, if you can think, you can do whatever you want and succeed.
