For thousands of years societies have been subjected to the sin and repent protection racket. A natural phenomena occurs that is unfavourable and the public at large are blamed for it as a punishment for being sinners. Repentance is only achieved by handing over sacrifices in the form of goods, treasures and resources. One would of thought that in the age of reason after the enlightenment and the scientific method we would be freed from our extortion and exploitation by mysticism and superstition. Where did it all go wrong? It seems they hijacked and corrupted the science....

The other elephant in the room with regard to HGV licenses (apart from the 10 month backlog at the DVLA and no Class 1 tests being done) is the government told the NHS Doctors not to do employment medicals (aka private work) until they had cleared their backlogs, so even if you wanted to train as an HGV driver, nobody can because they can’t get medicals. You think it’s bad now, wait till those of us who have medicals every two to three years have to renew and can’t get them done, then the crap is really going to hit the fan.

Peter Hitchens is easily one of the most prominent and coherent Conservative speakers of our time, I love it when we get to hear him clearly precisely and coherently create his arguments, without interviewers interrupting him ridiculously. But I have one complaint that I hope Peter Hitchens he is, if he is this prominent and this famous and this knowledgeable he must purchase himself some better audio technology microphones to use on his computer, he does have a mumbling way of speaking and it’s very hard to hear him coherently from his own computer microphone. I’m really shocked that everyone in the media now that he’s surrounded by who interviewing haven’t actually noted this with him yet. I mean this in the most positive way possible.

The generating life expectancy of a nuclear power station is around 30-50 years, but their legacy is far far longer and any benefit in the short / medium term does not outweigh the build / decommissioning / environmental closeting costs. When the government of the time talked about, and went ahead with, gas fired stations for electric generation - my thinking at the time was that we were going to run out of north sea gas for heating and cooking pretty soon. There's a lot of short sightedness going on. Is the thinking that the next lot / generation can deal with it as long as our needs are met right now! (I'm now wondering if my currently unused and covered fireplace can be reinstated - let's get back to old school and sod the rest of the planet as long as I can stay warm at a reasonable price!).

I normally agree with Peter, but he is totally off the mark, working from home works for a lot of people. The issue is more if your particular company has the IT infrastructure inplace.

It's not just about IT infrastructure. Many people like the social aspect of their jobs and collaborating in-person. The office environment also creates a distinct work-space which people struggle with when working from home. Working from home certainly works for big businesses though: reduced office expenses, opens up the door for outsourcing, greater profits.

Nuclear Plants, ok so thats the answer. Yet it can take 117 month (9.7 years) minamum to build just one plant. So Hitchen will be long dead by the time one or two are built. Its impossible to build more than 1 plant at a time due to the amount of resources our tiny little country would have to deploy to build said plant. Other larger countries have more resources, like America and Russia. After 20 to 40 years, that plant will have to be shut down anyhow. So its not a long term strategy at all.
