@@Mikki44 If you talk about the first few chords with no lyrics you are wrong. Peter once said, that the vocals in the beginning were all done by himself. You Can listen to an older version of that song on Peters Channel where there is no Tim and the beginning is the same. I guess that he just polished the sound quality a bit for the new Version with Tim. :D

If you stare at Tim at the end or maybe it’s to the left...you can see the camera shake on that last note. Peter is a master at layering and it’s just the two of them which I find incredible. They are so good together and have collaborated on many songs together. Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Greensleeves, Fire and Rain. Peter has also sung with Home Free in Amazing Grace and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For. Loved your reaction and breakdown. SO well done! Have a good weekend!

Lol love this song and how these guys did it so beautifully . I let my husband listen to the ending part because he was in a death metal band as a singer and he said this was a gutteral that was done it is very hard to do if you not use to doing them .

Knew you would like it. You would enjoy the technical side of Peter Hollens and his patrons featuring Home Free for "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". It is 350+ remote singers and you simply cannot hear the separation on the finished product. Peter and his crew do some wonderful productions. The quarantine was a window of opportunity for Peter.

These two did a great job of capturing the essence of the song - which is actually in The Hobbit book. I am an extreme Tolkien nerd (I speak fluent Quenya), and to see someone else understand the context of the song and do it justice is great. For context for those of you who aren't Tolkien addicts, this is the song that the Dwarves sing in Bilbo's house after they've gathered for their expedition. It's sad song, about loss of their original home, which was taken by Smaug. You can feel the sense of loss and longing for home in the way these two sing it, and the resolve to reclaim it towards the end in a grim but determined way. It's the musical version of "there's a good chance we will die fighting for our home, but we are willing to die to get it back from this ancient evil." The song is very significant, because it's the first time that the party comes together and does something as a unit. It's their first real bonding with each other.

Notice the lyrics Peter's singing, where that high note happens? "But shrill and harsh, across the marsh Its whistling voices were released."
@friedemannkemm63
@friedemannkemm63 3 жыл бұрын
From the sound, I think, that last note was done in growl, Tim's preferred technique at the lower end. Probably, he could have done it in full chest as well. But the growl gives it that special sound. Probably the first to use this sound in modern music was John Entwistle in Boris the Spider. If you dive deeper into the extreme bass world, you will find some people whose voices are far lower than even those of Tim, Geoff and Avi. Eric Hollaway, e.g., in one video answers the question about his range by singing from F1 up to F5 (without subharmonics or growl). Most extreme basses (octavists) are found in traditional Russian music and in southern gospel.

If you've never seen Peter and Tim's calloboration on a cover of "Greensleeves", you've GOT to! It shows not only Tim's low range, by his higher range as well. They did it in ONE amazing take and the scenery is gorgeous. It is just a beautiful rendition. Hope to see you react to it soon!

You're gonna get me joining right quick. I love your reference, and you absolutely had me enchanted with that Gregorian Chant ('chan te' is the Latin, if memory serves). I'm about to nail every part of this song in one voice (your reference to opened nasal passages REALLY helped me sing along with this and improve quality)! I really struggle with the low bass and high falsetto unto head voice transition, and your video made a MAJOR difference in real time... Thank you! :-D
