I could listen to Julia explain music 24/7. I adore how emotionally invested she gets when absorbing a new piece. I get pulled along by her excitement, by her pure enjoyment. I get so much more out of the song than I otherwise would have. It’s like watching a world class sports announcer giving play by play of a game. You not only enjoy the game, but you get special insight into the plays, the players, the coaching, etc. It just makes for a great experience for someone who isn’t as well versed but who already enjoys what they’re watching/listening to even without the added bonus of the expert. Both Tim and Peter are blessed with wide vocal ranges and when they flex their talents with these layered harmonies, it is magic. That’s because it’s a growl (aka dragon breath) rather than a subharmonic. The impressive part isn’t how low it is; growls are actually pretty easy. Tim is amazing because of how incredibly long he can sustain them.

Besides his amazing tenor, Peter is an absolute master at arranging and layering. I really hope to see more of him on your channel :) Besides this one, there's a collab with Avi Kaplan on Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair. But most impressive, imo, is his collab with Home Free and over 100 patrons, doing U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Thanks for this Julia...not only entertaining, but very informative, too. I've been listening to Peter Hollens for years; his amazing arrangements, and 5 octave range are out of this world! It was through him that I found out about Tim Foust's wonderful voice, and am now a huge 'fan' of Home Free! Tim have said the name but I'm not sure about the name, I know he have been in a group called "the blue Jupiter". But I don't know if it was that one that they were in at the same time. Tim have been in Home Free for... is it 6 or 8 years? And it was even some years before that. So it's about 10 to 15 years ago.

I'm pretty sure it was Ball in the House, based in Boston, that Peter was part of at the same time as Tim. Blue Jupiter was the first acapella group Tim joined, when he gave up studying to be a dentist to do music full time. But if I've got that wrong, someone please correct me.

Great reaction! Peter is a master of layering voices. He’s done many collaborations with Tim and a couple with Home Free too. This is my favorite though and if you look at the screen again when Tim hits the last note you’ll see the camera shake. Pretty cool. Try Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Greensleeves and Fire and Rain by them. Peter does have an amazing voice as does Tim. Glad you liked it!

This is the best bass voice I have heard in decades. And the other singers are special also. I am so impressed. What do you think??? Great harmonies. Great video. Great contrast in notes. I so enjoy great vocals. I have since middle school. I was in choir in middle and high school. We had some good singers. Not at this level. These men are vocal studs. The harmonies are mind blowing... The ladies are doing quite well also. SPECIAL......... This bass just melts my head. He gets down on the bottom note and lives there. As always thank you for sharing with us. I am not familiar with these artists. To say I am impressed is an understatement. Good stuff, good, good.

I really enjoy your careful and thoughtful explanations of the technical side of singing. We often forget that singing at this kind of level requires physical training and endurance, the same as with professional athletes. Listening to your explanations has really helped my understanding and appreciation of singers' performances. But I also love seeing you being caught up and fully captured by a performance, when you go from analytic to simply enjoying. Music is a powerful magnet, isn't it? Some performances, some songs, simply pull you in and won't let you go and when they do we're often standing with tears on our cheeks wishing that it would just keep going.

Flabbergasted Julia is intensely fun to watch. It really helps Peters arrangements when the two voices have 5+ octave ranges. He has said he has blended as many as 1056 different tracks per vocalist on his songs.

Julia, I read somewhere that Peter had somewhere in the neighborhood of 120 tracks layered in this video (all aCapella), not sure how many layers Tim had. They filmed in two different woodland areas and Peter and/or his people put it all together. Peter also has a great double solo with Avi Kaplan "Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair" that is also pretty awesome.

Sat down for my lunch break and decided to see what I could find on YT while I ate. Saw this and immediately clicked. I love Peter Hollens reactions in general but I also really enjoy your reactions, so this was a no brainer. Peter's whole Middle Earth album is amazing. I actually prefer his version of "I See Fire" over Sheeran's, which I'm sure is something noone would ever think someone would say. His collab with Hank Green for the "Hobbit Drinking Medley" (especially the video) is great. I also will toss in my vote for checking out his collab with Avi on "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" which is an old folk song and probably one of my favorites of Peter's. He has several really good collabs with Lindsey Stirling as well. His version of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is excellent. He has a version of "Carol of the Bells" featuring a ton of people ranging from a children's choir to his college a cappella group and others, I think something like 300+ people. The video for "Grown Up Christmas List" is absolutely adorable featuring his wife's vocals. The song is great, but the video always brings both a smile and tears. Peter really is a great and nice guy. If you're in the mood for something a bit spooky, the video for his collab with Bailey Polkman for the "Spooky Halloween Mashup" which is a really great mashup of Come Little Children (from Hocus Pocus) and Hanging Tree (Hunger Games) and the video is just really pulls off a disturbing vibe. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the "Disney Villains Medley" with Whitney Avalon which is spectacular. Peter has a wide repertoire and all of it is good. I'm always so excited when I find someone that's just discovering him. Somehow not as many people seem to react to him despite how great his arrangements and layering tends to be. Sorry for rambling there, I got a bit excited seeing you discovering Peter. :)

Hi Julia - fellow Aussie here: I don't remember where I read / heard it, but that last note wasn't a sub - it was Tim's famous sustainable growl. I wish I had kept up my singing - as a young'un, 30+ years ago, I once hit an A natural below low C (as a 17-year-old), now I'm lucky to get anywhere near a low C. Love your reactions - the head shivers, and eye-rolls especially with low notes. Us fellas really like how we can affect women with the low rumbling notes :-)

I got to hear this the first time as I watched you hear it for the first time. Very cool... 😎 Just a thought on the comments you made concerning how the higher backing "stacks" were more predominant during part of the song, then the lower while mid range and lower vocal "stacks" became louder as the upper mid and highs faded a bit. I noticed that this was in concurrence with the transition of the "solo" voice from lower range to higher range frequencies. As a mixing engineer, I recognize this as a technique called frequency notching. Many times this is done using EQ, but it can also be done by adjusting levels as the song progresses. It simply involves lowering the levels of instruments, (or :stacks" of vocals in this case), that are in a frequency range being used simultaneously by the "lead" instrument so they leave room for the "lead" instrument to remain "on top" of the mix. When you have 2 or more instruments competing to use similar frequencies, the louder instrument will cover up or "mask" the quieter one, hence the mixing problem of "frequency masking". I think what you have picked up on is not so much a function of the performers as it is a piece of clever mixing done by said engineers. Just my opinion on that one, but I have done this kind of thing in almost every mix I have ever done. The more instruments in the mix, the more this technique can be used. Now I did notice that when he, the soloist at that point, went into the higher register, the high harmonies disappeared from the arrangement completely. That I believe is the work of a very knowledgeable arranger and expertly sung by the performers. This eliminates the need for the mix engineer to fix anything, and gives another example of the brilliance of this piece. Anyway, I loved that you loved this piece as much as I did... 😊 P.S I loved the 2 full chords at the end, and Tim's final note.... wow.

I love the way you mix pure emotional reaction with professional analysis. So when Tim gets to about a G1 and below, he does a thing called a vocal growl (or called firebreathing). Basically instead of using his vocal chords to make the sound, he uses the false cords which (If I remember correctly) is part of the supporting muscles in the vocal folds. It is the same things that move when you cough, and activating them is like going from guitar strings to bass guitar strings. Much thicker, same vibration, much lower.
