Ted Nasmith has been creating visions of Middle-earth since the early 1970s when he decided to send JRR Tolkien one of his early pieces--and the professor responded with encouragement! In addition to being the sole featured artist in 12 Tolkien calendars (2022 most recently), he worked closely with Christopher Tolkien to create the incredible illustrated Silmarillion in 1998 (www.amazon.co.....
Michael and I had the privilege of discussing not just his inspiration and visions of Tolkien, but also:
* What kinds of paintings are the greatest challenge?
* Why he wasn't involved in Peter Jackson's films --and what he thinks of them!
* How will AI art impact artists like him?
Then, join us in our extended episode (theonering.com...) where we:
* Which place in Middle-earth inspires him most?
* What art styles inspire him?
* Who is HIS favorite Middle-earth artist?
* What's his take on upcoming War of the Rohirrim Film?
* And our infamous Confessions from the Comfy Chair, including:
* What level of Dante's Hell does The Rings of Power belong in?
* What's the nerdiest thing he's ever done?
* Who is his favorite Tolkien character?
* What cheesy movie or book does he like?

Ted Nasmith was and is a huge part of my head canon for Middle Earth since childhood. Ted, Alan Lee, and John Howe made Tolkien’s world come alive.

When you were talking about Tolkien´s experience in the war, Aragorn summed it up pretty well when talking about Merry: His grief he will not forget; but it will not darken his heart, it will teach him wisdom.

Excellent interview. Ted Nasmith has greatly shaped what I imagine as I read Tolkien.

@@TheOneRingcom If you didn't know it was the hidden valley and couldn't see Rivendell in the distance you'd just be blown away by the detail in the valley. I certainly was 30 years ago.

I love Ted’s Silmarillion artwork the most; though from my understanding, Ted missed out: he’s stated a few times that he asked to NZ to work on the film trilogy, and wasn’t able to do had to decline. So in that sense, Ted missed out.

I reached out to Mr. Nasmith a couple of years ago about purchasing some art and i found him to be so kind, personable, and humble. His art was my second exposure to Tolkien. So, because of that, i feel that Ted's art is right next to Tolkien's writting. Let me say that The Brothers Hildebrand are also co-equal though i didnt realize it at the time i owned their art books, which are now lost to time.

The striking orange version with the wonderful slip case of the ship burning? If so it's also my prized tolkien possession.

@@benn9918 I know the picture you're talking about, but I think my edition is a little older. The cover art on mine is Maglor throwing his Silmaril into the sea, against an angry red sky. Also very striking 😃

I’ve not even started The Silmarillion (get to open that tomorrow 🥳), and I’m also already eyeing Unfinished Tales (normal illustrated hardback vs deluxe slipcase illustrated edition)? 😊 Thank you

Thank you for introducing me a bit more to the person & art of Ted Nasmith… My overall favourite artist being Alan Lee (his art being so soft & ethereal to the world of Tolkien). Mr Nasmith’s landscapes are truly stunning. Also thank you for your faithfulness to the Tolkien source material in the light of Amazon’s stuff. Curious, what are the thoughts of the three main Tolkien artists on Rings of “power”? Thanks

Right on. Nasmith is the king of Middle-earth landscape. His vision of Middle-earth is breathtaking! John Howe actually worked on The Rings of Power... but Alan Lee didn't contribute and visuals to it, I believe (other than their obvious riffing off everything they did in PJ's movies). I'm hoping one day we can interview them too!

Convince me not to buy a limited print of the Blue Wizards by Mr Nasmith 😜 On the fence at the moment since the exchange rate is not in my (NZ) favour 🙃 Unfortunately he seems very positive about the Rings of Power 🥲 still a great artist though 😊

I love the discussion on AI art. There's a fantasy artist I like, who has over the years, gone from working in oils etc to working purely digitally. And it shows, their work has become very samey and lacks the depth that it used it. Old school is the best.

Jackson chose the artists he wanted, and his choices were excellent. Naismith is interesting, but he doesn't hold a candle to Lee and Howe.

According to Nasmith himself he was approached by a producer of the films. He does talk about it as well in this video at around the 32:30 mark. Jackson was still very much influenced by Nasmith though (which Alan Lee confirms in an interview), and he mentions that PJ does own some of his artwork. There is a website that shows several of his pieces side-by-side with very similar shots from the movies.
