@@MrAngryCucaracha I read your post again. I actually agree with what you said. Science is science but economics has a much greater difficulty to do experiments with. Agreed. There is ALWAYS something to worry about. That's the key here. There's always been people banging on about inflation, interest rates, national debt, war etc... there's ALWAYS something to worry about, always has been, always will be. But it doesn't take away from the fact that the stock market has been the best place to be for the last 50+ years easily. Put your money in to the S&P 500 and LEAVE IT.
@arnesbeganovic
@arnesbeganovic 2 жыл бұрын
exactly!!!First it was Covid, economy stopped, tourist can not travel, money does not flow and everything went down, then came disruptions with deliveries and market went down, then they said we printed to much money inflation is coming and stocks went down, and precise when we accepted that, Russia starts war with Ukraine and market goes down, and then oil prices went up, market goes down. But, heeeeeeey... what happend with Covid? Shouldn't we recover now little bit for Covid. It's gone now? So it's same old story as Peter talks in this video. Everything is in your guts. If you know the company you own, understand risks, know where money comes from and where it goes and at what rate, you can decide if it is good future for company or not. And act accordingly. Last year I had 16% ROI and this year I am already at 18% and market went down 30%. I had -30% at some point but did not sell. BOught more. Next report came and showed nice numbers, prices went up. Bang. Bingo.

His best book was Beating the Street. I like that he is a short position trader-- as I see myself. I think he over diversifies however. Running Magellan however he was forced to. His bright spot was revealing the restrictions fund managers imposed on him. For example he once disclosed he couldn't invest in union run companies. Many fund managers followed this abstract nonsense-- leaving underpriced deals for unrestricted management.

Not saying he is wrong but a couple things to consider. #1). In 1997, interest rates were about 6%, now, in order to keep the market growing, and avoid recession, the government has lowered interest rates to zero. That not only has hurt bond investors but also has eliminated that tool from future crashes. #2 there has been 4 quantitative easing from the US government since then, and it’s getting to the point where inflation is actually a real concern In order to avoid any economic hiccups, western governments have taken radical and possibly irresponsible action to support markets, which has allowed poorly run companies to stay afloat on cheap debt but the fact is the government is running out of tools to keep it going. Does that mean he is wrong about the 15 years, no. But that does not mean that there are not some real problems starting to show right now, especially if you consider the amount of dollars the us exports around the world.

Speeches are always easy to give especially from someone whose dealing with "other people's money". When your dealing with your own hard earned money then it matters what happens short term and the long term. Just ask the people who bought into tech shares at the height in 2000, or the ones who held banking stocks in 2007-8. It's not easy seeing 80% of your money evaporate within a week or two.

Especially difficult if it takes a long time to come back. Waiting a decade or more to break even, makes an impression. The biggest long term damage can be the biases and emotional baggage after that experience preventing good financial decision making in the future. Some sold at the bottom of the market and never came back.

I like Peter Lynch but getting as low as you can is great advice if there is a nuclear attack (or even a large conventional explosion). If you are too close to the explosion, yeah it’s not going to help much. However, if you are a little further out, and say in classroom with plenty of windows your main worry is going to be the innumerable shards of glass flying at you a high speed after the shockwave blows out all the windows. “Duck and Cover” people! p.s. In old timey talk great just means big or important. ya know, we had the Great War, then the Great Depression, “I am Oz, the Great and Terrible” and all that jazz.

100%. It will help you survive the shockwave and probably also stop you getting blinded by the light. If you're far enough away you may be able to escape upwind and outrun (in a vehicle) the fallout. Obviously not going to do anything if you're inside the explosion lol.

Can someone explain the part about interest rates? 10 grand, 5 times in a row gets you 2 billion dollars. How does that work?
@bradleyboyer9979
@bradleyboyer9979 3 жыл бұрын
I assume he means if you could correctly guess interest rates, you could short or long bonds and be correct each time, thus making a lot of money. Regarding how he got to 2 billion, I don't know. But he is correct that if you could know interest rates with certainty, you would make an unlimited amount of money.

So far there's only reason to believe that hold back consumption and supply chain shortages could cause higher inflation in the short term but no real sign that it'll continue on.
