Absolutely great video! I just took the exam last night and I scored 88%. Missed 4 questions. All I did to prepare was to read over Part IX of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR) beforehand. Which is basically a point-form read. Read it once. Much of the rest you can google, most was common sense. The only tricky part is that the answers are sometimes the "best" answer. Just look for the key points in the regulation and compare them to the answer. I'm in the process of moving my photography and filmmaking to KZbin. I saw a lot of great drone footage and living in Calgary there is a lot of great landscape to shoot. So after seeing the video by Peter M I was a little dismayed. I kept digging into it and thought of just going for it. Glad I did. I don't even have a drone yet. I just wanted to see if I could pass. One question I have for you. At 4:51 in your video you appear to be shooting a public event (perhaps at Fort Calgary). Isn't that restricted airspace? Did you attain permission from the organizer OR were you far enough away that it was ok to do so? Seeing as you may be from Calgary I may hit you up for the advanced if I decide to take it once I get some actual flying time in. ;)

Great job! For that footage we were waaaay back with a long lens, we had permission from the organizer and we had airspace permission from Nav Canada. :) Yes definitely look into advanced! We’re here if and when you’re ready!

Hey Arden! I had a question about permitting & insurance. Do you as the contracted drone pilot handle all the permitting for your client or does the production in-charge take care of that prior to shoot? My other question is in regards to insurances. Do higher budget productions require a custom insurance policy for that specific project and days of shoot or do you simply operate with the insurance policy covering your own business?

That depends. Permits like road closures are already required by large productions and usually a location manager will take care of that. On small commercials where they don't have a locations department, applying for permits may be necessary because you're the only person on the crew that knows how. Higher budget productions like Netflix's Black Summer and 007 No Time to Die require specific coverages and documents from your insurance to be on set, often companies like Netflix have specific drone policies that you must follow as well. Just because you're comfortable doing X with your system doesn't mean that they will allow it on their set. 😊

Hey welcome back man & bloody great video. Tbh not sure why these guys are selling out, making such click baity vids...(fake news) also frustrates me when there is no fact checks done before posting a vid like that to their millions of subs. Good on you man for pulling them up. As a licenced operator here in Australia, I didn't think the process would be that extreme in Canada the way Peter explained.. 🤔. Hope he sees this 😂 ✌🏽

Thank you! Appreciate the support! Yeaaahhh there’s always a “I’m leaving NY” or whatever but showing a parking ticket, titling the video with the max fine and then acting like it’s too difficult just for the drama is 👎🏼👎🏼 We will see if they notice 🧐

Great video ! Some people are making simple things more complex. I watched the peter video as well and it’s scared me as well. 😱

We're aware of the flashy-flashy of the pilot certificate, and the erroneously-placed disclaimer about flying in the cold, which was: You CAN fly in the cold, but at risk of being fined, especially if something goes wrong. Honestly, these errors were a result of a hasty edit to include Vader (the cat) so we have no regrets. Happy flying!

Good informative. Curious if an American citizen can study and take the exam?

Negative. Foreigners must apply for a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC).

hello there i have been racing with my friends in Canada and have been for three seasons. and have bought alot of gear and have 5 racing quads and alot of track set-ups example 500 colored markers,55 orange pylons (cones),7 proffesional air gates and a ton of styrofoam noodles and pvc with led lights and hoops with an air cube..so went flying in the same spot and some great guy comes over and asks do you have permission and have your certificate and registration i and my friend replied yes.. then the man said he did not want to hear or see us racing . my friend replied then i will race with my micro 145 3inch prop which weighs with battery 195 grams and can fly it any where regardless of any rules well my friend this went up the next week.......... USE OF DRONES IN THE BAIE-D’URFÉ SKY Published on July 4, 2019 Notice to all drone amateur, it is prohibited for any recreational use, to fly drones (aircraft without a human pilot) on the territory of Baie-D'Urfé. If you see a user of these devices or a drone flying over our territory, please be advised that the jurisdiction is not the responsibility of the Town but rather the Police Department of the City of Montréal. You must contact the PDQ1 in your area to file any complaint. With the reinforcement of new laws, the Ministère des Transports will soon encourage all citizens to dial 9-1-1 or contact local police forces should they see recreational drone owners violating these laws. so like i said even with the micro quads they in time will be banned as well as the 5 inchers due to amazon and other companies buying up air space.notice that it is directed to recreational flyers only... for now.all drones recreational flying will be limited at local clubs ...which is boring same sight like to change it up so what do you think i know it is in Canada but will come your way like the basic flight test...did
