Folk singers from my youth in the 60s, during the Vietnam era, when we were both protesting that war, as well as praying for our loved one's safe return home from it. I lost 2 dear fellas over there . . . my brother's best friend Pat, whom I also loved as my "second brother". The other young man was a neighborhood friend. 💔💔R.I.P. 💐

But this song, written by Pete Seeger in 1955 and first done by the Kingston Trio, in in 1962, was BEFORE the Vietnam was ramped up into the big controversial mess it became. It really meant all wars not just Vietnam.

This is a later performance just before Mary was diagnosed with leukemia. They sang against ALL social injustice and for peace love and understanding, they were never about personal gain but about using music to transcend all divides/injustices right up until Mary passed Sept 16th 2009. Delve deeper you'll not regret it I promise

One of the more gentle, albeit powerful protest anthems of my generation. It was actually written in the 1950's but was given new life during the protest years of the 1960's when several people and groups performed it. I love this version by Peter, Paul and Mary, so beautifully and thoughtfully rendered. It obviously touched your heart as it did ours some 60 years ago. A lovely, heartfelt reaction Sarah. Cheers from Canada!

Love this trio. They were an American folk group formed in 1961. They had a lot of great hits such as "Puff, The Magic Dragon", "Lemon Tree", "500 Miles", "If I Had A Hammer", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Day Is Done". They recorded quite a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "When The Ship Comes In".

Impressive that you made it through without tears, I didn't 😭 I spent time in Vietnam, (U.S. Navy), it was an abomination. I learned at my young age that some things can not be forgotten, you have to learn to live with memories. I also learned to ask, "when will we ever learn?" This was special, Sarah, thank you. Songs like this and Bob Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind" go hand in hand. Stay well 🌹🙂😇

Hi Sarah! "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" is a modern folk-style song, inspired lyrically by the traditional Cossak folk song "Koloda-Duda", Pete Seger borrowed an Irish melody and the first 3 verses in 1955. Pete, Paul and Mary included the song on their debut album (which spent 5 weeks as the No.1 album in the United States in 1962). Some other musicians who has recorded the song: "Vera Lynn", "Joan Baez" "Dolly Parton", "The Searchers", "Harry Belafonte" and "Marlene Dietrich" (performed the song in English, French and German). Pete, Paul and Mary have recorded so many amazing songs "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" is just one of them.

This particular video of their performing the song was a great suggestion and I have not seen this video before. Many of us were in the peace movement in those days and I did see Peter, Paul and Mary in concert. They were such beautiful folksingers. Mary Travers had a clear and resonant voice. Two other outstanding folksingers with beautul voices in the peace movement were Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie.

I loved all their hits when I was a kid, this is one of the most famous, but there’s also Lemon Tree, and Stewball, and I Dig Rock ‘n’ Roll Music, Yellow Bird, This Land is Your Land, If I Had a Hammer, Early Morning Rain, oh, there’s so many! Their harmonies really set them apart.
