The Peter's banded skink (Scincopus fasciatus) is a bit of a newcomer to the reptile hobby. These skinks are beautiful, robust, and have a great personality. But, are they the right pet lizard for you?

One little correction. I didn't realize that the sand in the picture was calcium sand. I don't recommend using calcium sand. Regular sand would be a much safer choice. Sorry for the mistake.

@@lanat5947 I would reccomend something like a crested gecko, however some may need to eat insect 1 or 2 times a month most of them actually dont eat alot of insects mostly a powder you mix with water and feed daily. Skinks are naturally more inquisitive and intelligent than other reptiles. When I was 17 I was a bulldozer driver. I was working in a weird area of my country this area was similar to a combination of summer season Australia or a desert. Area is called tanjaroo. Which was unusual for me it was my first time knowing there’s an area like that in my country, since my country consists of snowy mountains and forests. So anyhow I was getting ready to switch some of equipment and grease and gas it up. And all of a sudden I saw a big beautiful rainbow colored lizard that looked like a big mono line skink “another common native skink here” except it was huge and had the most beautiful color more than any other of the probably 800 different reptile species living here. It came to me which scared me for a moment I thought it was venomous or something so I was cautious but it just sat in front of me and kept staring up and down. Eventually I touched it and it didn’t react so I picked it up and placed it in a safer location, then it followed me again all the way back, so I figured it must be asking for food, I didn’t have anything to feed to a lizard other than water so I spilled some onto a thin plastic lid and it immediately stuffed its head onto it and started drinking. It turned out to be very thirsty and went off on its way after drinking enough. The species is deemed unidentified, along with the native bearded dragons and monitors we have here. The issue is in my country we have ornithologists not many herpetologists. And many local idiots who think eating certain rare wild animals will increase their dick size. Currently I’m the only person in my country working on this issue.

Hi Clint, I actually keep a pair of PBS and am hoping to produce some captive bred individuals soon. One thing I wanted to say is that because so little is known about these animals wild behaviors (and even their behaviors in captivity because the buggers spend 90% of their time buried) the optimal husbandry is still mostly up for scientific debate. Personally because of new collection data suggesting that they prefer areas near irrigated land and low lying grasslands instead of sandy shrub lands as previously thought, I keep my skinks on a layer of coconut fiber topped with 6-8 inches of filtered shredded aspen and I am seeing great success. My female lost a piece of her tail as she came to me because it was mummified from bad sheds (likely caused by being housed on sand-like substrates for most of her life). Personally I believe sand is evil for the vast majority of reptiles and it would take significant data to convince me that it is optimal for PBS, just something to consider for husbandry recommendations (especially for hobbyists considering these guys as they are amazing).

@@DankiusMaximus Its mostly in the skull shape with skinks. Takes a while working with them before you can tell the differences. Males tend to have much bulkier heads and a thicker tail base (to house hemipenes). My pair is actually much different size-wise so its easy to tell them apart at a glance. I don't know if this i s true for all PBS but my male is also a lot bolder, I see him exploring a lot and he eats like a champ while my female is more timid. I've also heard of food preferences between males/females but I haven't discovered anything that one will eat and the other won't.

You should do a head to head on Peter's banded and fire skinks or blue tounges and pink tounges

I have had two of these for some time now. I have a little more information. They live in colonies, and I keep them in the same tank. I am not sure they can be breed under the normal conditions I have them in. They do get the water bowl dirty everyday. Like other skinks you need to check toes after a shed. I use under the tank heater for them. They pretty much stay on the warm side of the tank. They are very friendly but do not like being out as much. I just keep them as pets I observe. They hide all the time so not as good as bearded dragons.

Thank you so much, and so good to hear from you! This is actually the reason that I have delayed covering animals that are wild caught for so long. I don't want to motivate people to put demand on wild populations. I hope I explained it well enough that those that watch this video will understand. I really appreciate your feedback on this.

I have become very fond of the banded skinks I work with, they are so great! They don't mind being handled, very curious creatures and nocturnal which is fantastic for people who work through the day and get home later. Aside from fire skinks these are fantastic creatures.

These guys are absolutely everything that I would ever want want in a skink especially with being good for handeling. But I couldn’t feel at rest knowing that I took one from the wild. I’m going to wait until I can get one that is bred in captivity.

I got my dude back in May, I didn’t have the experience I should have had for something so new to the reptile world, BUT I have had great success so far. I feed him outside of his tank in a separate tub, he loves Dubias and super worms! He has never ate veggies, instead he will drink the water off them. I use a uvb bulb just to be safe, but as soon as those lights turn off he’s out and about 😊. Maybe as time goes on I’ll share what has been successful for me but so far he’s alert happy and healthy eating food every night. And that face! Ugh such a cute face!

Also side note, I got him from a small reptile shop in the ghetto, they had them on a dirt type substrate, I noticed he would “sniffle” a lot when I first got him, he now has sand mixed with ground walnut shell substrate. I noticed no more sniffles and the clicking sound of trying to push the substrate out his nose. Keeps heat well too, also I have about 5 inches of substrate, he will move it around a lot too.

My dream lizard is a Blue Tounge Skink, and this is litterally a miniature, cheaper, and arguably cutier version of a BTS. Breeders need to work on getting captive babies out ASAP so I can get one!

Thanks for the thoughtful commentary on importation. I've seen a few of these guys die suddenly from fungal infections in reptile groups I frequent, so something for interested keepers to consider. It's a dream reptile for me, but I am also holding out for one that is in need of rehoming or a CBB baby... they are so dang adorable and I hope more folks are able to breed them in captivity, cuz afaik not much is known about them in the wild or their population
