Just for your information, I've had one of these and he definitely did drop his tail once after getting it caught in some cork bark in the enclosure, frightened by the misting system. The tail grew back full length, as an exact clone of the tail he lost.

Hey Clint!!! I have a green keel-bellied lizzard and i must say you are SPOT ON! I bought one because i didint have the money for a green tree monitor! I would also add that this lizzard is REALY active during the day. I feed mine around noon and the lizzard hunts for hours, even sometimes he is so active he distracts me while working because of the noise of him running around! I've only had him a couple of months and i absolutly love him!

He's one year old, cbb and went from "ewww a human!" to "oh hi, hello human, can I take a run all over you for the 27th time today?" within 2 weeks! He's SO beautiful, interactive, curious, intelligent and goofy! Hey Clint’s Reptiles team, I have been following you guys from the very start and I just wanted to say that I’ve so rarely seen someone with the shear amount of love for reptiles and animals in general (aside from maybe snake discovery and Kamp Kennan) I look forward to every video and I watch them all with my bearded dragon Elyot. Speaking of which Elyot is bobbing as I write this (I’m taking that as him saying hi) Also I love telling people that birds are reptiles and watching the reactions after reluctantly looking it up!

As long as wild caught animals are kept to the minimum, they should only be purchased by breeders that are aiming to improve the genetic diversity of their breeding stock and the captive population.

I agree. I have a male Desert Iguana for over 10 years now (that was already a full grown adult when I bought him and is the longest lived lizard I ever care for) and he's still eating a large salad almost every day. It took a couple of years for him to calm down (he would dash as soon as he saw my hand entering his tank) but then we bonded and he trusts me 100% They're a perfect little handful of a lizard. Wish they were more plentiful in the reptile market.

Things to expect in the rainforest: (a) Mud. (b) Spiny things. (c) Ants. Lots and lots of ants. If you slip due to (a) resist the temptation to grab for a branch due to (b) and (c). I recommend a walking stick for this reason.

It was so cool to see this video! My wife always wanted a keel-bellied lizard but I wasn't so sure. But we both have our own reptile interests so when she found a nice captive-bred specimen, we brought him home and put him in a bioactive enclosure after his quarantine. Oh my gosh. I'm so glad she got this lizard. He is one of my favorite pets now! He is SOOO personable. I don't handle him at all because I have cats, but sometimes he gets on my hand anyways. Every time I come into the room he comes out to watch me. He almost seems to enjoy me talking to him when I mist his tank or prune his plants. He is always out in the open. He is so funny at feeding time. He has such a vibrant personality. I couldn't speak highly enough about him. If you can get a captive-bred keel-bellied lizard, DO IT! They are awesome!

So I was thinking, why not for Thanksgiving you review turkeys as pets, I have kept them and I would rate them 2 for handlability, 4 for care, hardiness 4 bc as chicks or poults they are super easy to kill but fully grown they are rock solid, 5 for available, and 2 for upfront costs.

The emerald tree skinks must think of people as comfortable, centrally heated moving trees which is why they are so eager to jump on you.
@ClintsReptiles

They definitely don't think that. They know which person they are on, and they will gladly leave their much warmer basking spot to come see a human.
@akaqueequeg

I was being a bit checky with that comment. No doubt I was anthropomorphizing them in some way. Though that applies I think of people as centrally heated moving trees, which is a bit weird.
@ClintsReptiles
@ClintsReptiles 2 жыл бұрын
You're good. I only said something because I used to say basically the same thing to people, "be an interesting tree". But as I have spent more time with them, it has become obvious that they don't think of us as trees at all. It is easy to get them to go from one of my hands to the other, or from one of your hands to the other, but they are hesitant to go from one of your hands to one of my hands or vice versa. They know which person they are on, and they put serious thought into changing people.

An emerald tree skink with a comically long tail? Sounds like a winner to me! Random reptile question for a anyone who might be able to help me. I’m upgrading my ball python to a 24x36 enclosure soon. How big should my heat mat be? I’m torn between Zoo Med’s 8x12 and 8x18, unless there’s a better option.

Excellent! I’ve been waiting for this video for a while. I have a green keel bellied lizard, and it’s by far the best lizard I’ve ever owned. Your description of their handleability is spot on. I got a captive bred from Reptile Rapture, and he was a bit older. He certainly isn’t interested in being held, but he’ll come right up to me whenever food is involved. But he is stunning and a true treat to watch. Clint, could you recommend any plants for a bio active enclosure? I’ve got mine in a bio active, but he’s super active and tends to trample all the plants I buy from Josh’s Frogs.

If you are willing to prune regularly (it grows fast), raphidophora tetrasperma is very, very sturdy. They're sold as houseplants at places like Home Depot, but if you can't find it locally, it's easily purchased online and generally not expensive. If you want to get a little more fancy (and spend a little bit more money, though still not insanely expensive), raphidophora descursiva is equally tough, has a slightly different look, and grows a little bit slower, so it won't eat a vivarium overnight. Keep in mind both of these plants can get huge unpruned, but so can pothos (actually, mature pothos is even larger than mature raphidophoras), so you're going to have to do some trimming every couple months. However, unlike pothos, the immature vines still have sturdy stems about the diameter of a finger, which makes them perfect for a smaller lizard to climb all over without shredding the plant.

I came up with what I think is a good merch design and I was curious if you had a way to submit it, or if I should just give you a link in a comment when I felt as though the art is ready. I have many lizards and reptiles as pets, but the keel belly is my number one favorite, mine will jump on to my arm as soon as the lights are on and, I open its enclosure , waiting to be fed. Unfortunately it lost part of its tail prior to purchase, as a result of a clumsy sales person,Thankfully it grew back 80% of the original.

I feel like tarantulas, corn snakes, hissing roaches, leopard geckos, millipedes, pac man frogs, and house geckos would all be good contenders, as they are all easy to care for and don't require enormous or ultra complex enclosures. However, unless the house on wheels has climate control on pretty much constantly, or you are in a region where open windows are able to keep temperatures comfortable all the time, exotic pets might not be a great idea. A camper can get mighty hot/cold in a short time.

This species is amazing. It belongs in the same family as most common European lizards, but it is arboreal. In Europe, most lizards are able to climb but no species is truly arboreal. Maybe they have those keeled scales to have a better grip on branches. Most lizards of the lacertid family have very long tails and drop them easily. However, not all drop them. The Balkan green lizard for example loses its ability to drop the tail in adulthood, as found from a study in Greece. However, they still regrow it if it is broken. Those lizards are very curious and omnivorous. Even in the wild if you are gentle around them, they can approach you and even feed near you. However, they don’t tolerate catching and handling at all and dart away immediately.

Lmbo, “this is a tail with a little lizard attached to it”. I hate that I thought that was so funny

Awesome dayactive lizards, I recently got a breeding pair and now I have a small clutch of eggs (3) My breeding pair is in a large enclosure 2x2x5 and they are not at all social. I'm gonna follow your advice and try to socialize the hatchlings from day 1 as I have done with my ackie monitor hatchlings.

I'm getting one soon, because exactly what I want is a green tree monitor that doesn't get as big and expensive. I have a 20 tall set up for a baby and a 24x18x36 set up for when he's older. Both bioactive.
