How high was your pi-rads score? What procedure did you choose?

Hi Peter, thanks for sharing your story. I was recently diagnosed and I'm thinking about going with CyberKnife. Can I ask you a few questions? Have you had any long-term side effects? Why did you choose treatment at UCSF -- was it near your home? There is a CK center here in the Detroit area. I asked them how many prostate CKs they have done, and they say they are doing about 10-15 per year. Seems low to me, but I don't know what is considered average. Any idea? Like you, the idea of surgery is not appealing to me, so I'm considrering CK or Brachya. Any advice would be appreciated. My Gleason is 7, PSA is 3.2 and all localized, etc. Thanks again for your story. I'm glad you are doing well!

Sorry I haven't replied earlier...just seeing your question. No side effects to speak of. UCSF has a reputation for excellence and they came through. Dr. Gottschalk was my oncologist and he put together a superb plan. I am approaching 10 years since the procedure next year and my PSA as of 2 weeks ago is less than 0.1. If your PSA levels and Gleason score support CK, I absolutely recommend it, especially over any kind of surgery.

What was your pi-rads score from your MRI scan?

Diagnosed with Gleason 6? That would be Grade Group 1. I suspect ANY treatment would stop it from spreading outside the prostate. Does Gleason 6 PC actually spread outside the prostate?

Gleason 6 is now known to not spread, but it may turn into a gleason7 which is why now G6 cancers are actively surveiled. Once it goes to a gleason7 if it does & most don't cancer then treatment should be carried out. Thats current practice
