I have really enjoyed your detailed account of The Yorkshire Ripper. I'm from Middlesborough and it always felt as if it was on our doorstep. Especially when Jacqueline Hill was murdered, as her mother was a teacher at my school and her fiance lived on our street. In 1981 I went off to university. I became friendly with a girl from another course who I always seemed to be next to in the canteen queue. She was great fun, down to earth, friendly and I later found out was from Leeds. She was incredibly talented and outgoing and I always enjoyed her company. My mother loaned me a book by David Yallop about Peter Sutcliffe. In the centre of the book was one of the photographs that you have shown of Rita Rytka helping the police enquiries. I was stunned, it was my lovely friend. She had changed her name, I have never disclosed her new identity, or the university we attended. You did say that you didn't know what has happened to her, I thought you might like to know that she achieved an excellent Honours Degree, and more than likely a great career. I lost touch with her, though I think of her whenever I see anything about 'The Ripper', I admired and respected her, I never let her know that I knew who she was as it never felt the right thing to do. I prey that life has been good to her.
@DiD862 жыл бұрын
That’s amazing! Thanks so much for sharing that! I’m so glad that Rita ended up being successful in life. If only her sister had been allowed to be the same. 😞
@richiehoyt8487 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that interesting account. It is a testament to you that you did the 'classy' thing and allowed Ms. Rytka her privacy - many, perhaps most, people would have at the very least made her the subject of gossip, if they didn't actually try to blackmail her, or sell her out to the tabloids! It is a testament to _her_ that she seems to have turned her life around and got herself a good education. I'm not casting aspersions against prostitutes, sex workers, whatever term one wishes to use, but as she, no doubt, knows better than anyone, it is hardly a career one would wish for one's self, and most certainly not in an uncontrolled environment! Obviously it's hardly surprising all things considered, that Rita got out of the game, but prostitution is notorious for the way in which, in one way or another, it traps women for as long as 'it' has a use for them. While I'm not 100% clear if Rita actually conversed with Sutcliffe, she obviously went through a tremendous ordeal in her own right, the loss of her sister in such savage and tragic circumstances hardly being the least of it, and then to know that she came within an ace of having been the monster's victim that night in place of her sister... In view of all of that, throw in, I'm sure, a hefty measure of surviver's guilt and could anyone honestly have blamed her had she descended into depression, become dependent on drink or drugs, or, as quite understandably happened to some of the other survivors, become lairy of men in general or unable to leave the house..? I earnestly hope that after leaving college she went on to happy and successful life. Note: For obvious reasons I have continued to refer to RR by her given name.

IM TRULY STUNNED! This is hand on heart the truth? Please forgive me for my question, but the Helen and Rita portion of this horrific case is what truly broke my heart and I’ve always wanted to know what became of Rita. These two girls were only 17, babies who had been dealt a hard hand at life. For Rita to go down the path of education and enlightenment is a testament of her strength and character, nobody would have blamed her if she chose oblivion, most would have after losing a sister, a TWIN to such evil.

Even being that young and my father watching news reports every so often and him subsequently tell my sister's not to go outside on their own etc. when he was finally caught I remember the loud shouts of relief among the neighbors at the time and my father fist bumping tbe air in delight at the capture of such a sadistic but calculated killer. Not only did I live in Leeds (Shadwell which is close to Roundhay Park) but I worked in an office only a mile from the Arndale shopping centre in Headingley where his last victim Jacqueline Hill was found. It was a very worrying time, and police were everywhere. I was stopped in a late night police check of traffic coming out of Leeds on one occasion. The whole story is interesting and at the same time tragic beyond description.

Easily the most detailed presentation that I have ever seen on this matter. The research alone must have taken you a very long time. It is astounding really how dumb luck seemed to protect him and, although they did their best, this does show how ineffective the investigation was. One can only hope that, these days, a monster like Sutcliffe would be caught far more quickly given ubiquitous CCTV and ANPR monitoring, modern DNA tracing techniques and computerised cross-matching of all enquiries etc.
@DiD86 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it took around a year or so. For only 46 pages! Yes, I think that he would’ve been caught VERY quickly with the HOLMES system. Brilliant documentary. I personally feel that the policemen who had the foresight to return to recover the hammer & a knife when they found him with a known prostitute & false number plates, then another knife from the station toilet, should have been given an award for their diligence.

Their actions just reinforce the fact that South Yorkshire Police were every bit as incompetent as West Yorksire Police. Imagine taking a man into custody who was armed with a knife and letting him out of their sight at the crime scene itself to dispose of incriminating evidence. No wonder it took five years to catch Sutcliffe, the shock is that they ever caught him at all.
@paulanthony5274 Жыл бұрын
@@ngog17 I take it you've also heard about the killing kit he was wearing ? The homemade leggings. He was wearing them when arrested and the police didn't even think to put them in with the evidence for the case. One of the most important things to prove his motive was one of a sexual nature. They were padded at the knees and opened at the crotch. It was fashioned from a jumper and he'd widened the arms and used safety pins to attach them and his legs would fit down the arms and his privates would hang where hole for you'd head would be and it was pulled up over his backside. The police said "Peter...What are they" and he just sheepishly replied "leggings" and not used in evidence av the trial to prove the 'HOLY MISSION" was a load of nonsense. Could the have made any more mistakes in this case. They couldn't even play cluedo that lot.

Thank you very much. That was exactly what I was striving for. I know longer videos tend to put people off clicking on them but with a case of this complexity, there was no way I was going to compromise on the detail I put on. I wanted to do what no one else has done, bring ALL the facts together in one place and also help people to understand that it wasn’t as simple as “the police were just crap at their job” as is usually the conclusion. Whilst there absolutely were major F ups, they were held back by the paper-based system they had to use. It clearly worked as Sutcliffe’s name kept getting spat back out but there just wasn’t the cohesion to bring it all together. He was just another name amongst tens of thousands of others….

It was a Saturday morning and I was in Bradford for a football match, after walking to Garden Lane (hasn’t changed) I wandered down to The Carlisle pub (permanently closed) and then on to Oak Ave which I’m sure must be demolished soon (if it hasn’t been since I visited) the gap in the fence offered easy access, but entering the building did send a chill. I must credit Richard Cobb for directions to the flat itself, his video offered a unique tour of the building. On my way back home I detoured to Ash Grove and, as I did at Oak Avenue for Patricia, said a small prayer for Barbara Leach. A later visit to Chapeltown, saw me visit The Prince Philip playing fields, Reginald Street Park, The site of the old Gaiety pub, Roundhay Park opposite West Avenue and Buslingthorpe Lane. I have long held a fascination with these crimes, but, like you, I am conscious of the endless victims associated with Peter Sutcliffe’s reign of terror.

DISCLAIMER: The images used in this video are for illustrative purposes only. They are not meant to accurately depict every single point being made or explained but are the best representation of them, given my limited resources. Please keep this in mind before commenting. CORRECTIONS! During the Ann Rooney section, I accidentally mention the Crown Prosecution Service. This body did not exist until 1984, which I actually knew, so no idea why I made that mistake. Before the CPS was created, the police used to handle all charging matters themselves. At one point I call CC Ronald Gregory, Robert by mistake. This is likely because I knew a guy called Robert Gregory and it must have slipped into my subconscious. Didn't spot it until after the upload.

Its a good video but its based entirely on the official police solution to the Ripper murders and that means you accept as they did the confessions of Sutcliffe in their entirety. This was a man arrested by an outside force because the WY force had eliminated him as the Ripper several times already and they were absolutely certain he was not their man mainly because his teeth patern and his O blood type didnt match the Ripper's teeth and blood. From the arrest forward the goalposts were changed and the copycat Ripper was airbrushed out of the story, also talk about the teeth and blood type. Sutcliffe's confessions were adapted to all the murders and the case was closed firmly as far as the police and the media were concerned. Meanwhile the Real Ripper remained a free man and he was living in Ireland and I had the doubtful privilege of discovering his identity in November 1979 as a result of the media campaign to identify the Ripper's letters and Geordie accent, communicating it to the police and just over a year later witnessing the stitch up and framing of Sutcliffe as the one and only Yorkshire Ripper. I had no choice but to write a book titled the Real Yorkshire Ripper and I had to deal with this man until he departed Ireland. For four decades the public have been brainwashed with newspaper reports and tv documentaries all based on the official police stitch up of Sutcliffe as the Ripper. For more information on the real story read this facebook page and it links to my website. facebook.com/noelogaraaathlone

My suspicion is that due to the recession, cops had to pay their mortgages and of course the fact that men weren't being murdered, just a bunch of loose women out too late......... They liked all that overtime...Hard to get ahead in England at the time? They wanted the females in their family to be afraid of going out? For the sake of keeping them pure and faithful and safe? But, hey I could be wrong. They may have wanted the props and the win of catching the ripper?

On Monday 3rd of October 1977 I was 10 and attending primary school (20 miles north of Manchester) on that morning in our assembly the headmaster made the whole school aware of the murder near a cemetery in south Manchester. What we had been hearing on the news just got real but on the other side of the Pennines. What I remember most is the streets quiet and sisters/mums/aunts/friends only travelling in pairs or being met by known family members, this started on the Sunday night before our school assembly. I can still remember it as clear as day as it sent a shiver through the school. Respect your work even more DiD x stay safe pal

What Sonia also said was "What have you done that for Peter even a sparrow has a right to live" Also when Sutcliffe was in the charge room at sheffield, the desk sargent looked at the photo fit on the wall and said, about Sutcliffe, "Thas ripper thee" one of the officers said to him "If you are the ripper you only have to say you know" Sutcliffe just sighed and kept looking towards the door, the officer got in his face and said "I think you are". : source Michael Bilton Wicked beyond belief..Excellent video well done! I particularly like the way you characterise witnesses and friends and police and give them their own voice, it shows that you put an effort into if all.

Friends and family that knew him have said that he came across as very quiet and soft spoken , seemingly normal in other words. He would drive his mum and sisters home and be very caring towards his wife. Chatting with friends in the pub and having sunday dinner with his mum. Scary how he had this dark side and was able to hide it so well. Chilling

Lots of previously unknown victims reported in this excellent historical perspective of one of the UK's most dangerous killers. It also seems that he could have been caught much sooner, if it wasn't for the ineptitude of the police and the hoaxer, but failed to be so. Regardless of the occupation of some of the victims, the sorrow that the families must have felt cannot be ignored. This was so well done and presented, thank you so much for your diligence and research. 👍👍❤❤

I visited relatives in Yorkshire in 1979. A native Texan, I had previously never heard of the Ripper ( no internet back then). One night out at a pub, I noticed the absence of females everywhere. The streets were eerily quiet, even as a 20 year old male, it spooked me. Fear in the air.
@timcastle1844 Жыл бұрын
The Police made the mistake of believing the letter and phone calls were from the "Ripper". The man, loosely described, who sent it is responsible for the deaths of several more women and he never got caught. This person is another psychopath and in many respects as bad as Sutcliffe.

I remember this terrifying time as I was born in 1970 thus was of an age to worry for my mother who had to cut through Roundhay Park for her night shift in an old peoples home. Unfortunately my father never thought of not drinking after work so that he could have driven her there. My mum gave up this job as I was so worried but I still had terrible sleep thinking he would get her. The treatment of the surviving victims was appalling especially not believing in the appearance or Yorkshire accent, as was the treatment of his victims. He left 26 children without a mother. A very well done and thoughtful video.
