Entrepreneur Peter Thiel believes that history, at least when it comes to businesses, never repeats itself. As a member of the so-called PayPal Mafia, the first outside investor in Facebook and founder of the Thiel Fellowship, Thiel himself has built a career of founding one-of-a-kind enterprises. Hear the "contrarian truths" that led to his biggest successes.

He's the only entrepreneur I've heard directly encourage you to aim for a monopoly. Everyone else is like “yeah competition is awesome, it makes everyone better” but Thiel is like “nah screw competition, dominate!”. 😂

Psychologically hard to leave because their identities were so WRAPPED UP in the competitions they had won, the people they had beaten along the way. They couldn't imagine doing something different. This is why COMPETITION is a two edged thing. In a competition you NARROW your focus to those around you but you lose sight of what is IMPORTANT or more valuable.

Great talk ! I wholeheartedly agree as society we seek too much affirmation and confirmation and as a result to maintain it have to “wrong” all those who don’t conform (or else it means we’re all wrong?) Breakthroughs don’t come from Zero sum games but rather from spaces where sum of parts is bigger than the whole.

When you compete ferociously you'll get better at that you're competing on but you'll always narrow your focus to beating the people around you and it often comes at this very high price of losing focus on what is more important or perhaps very valuable.

Monopoly can be in 2 ways 1. You excel at something so good, there is no one even close by - such as google search engine. this is the good kind. 2. You work the gov and make laws to shield you from competition. this is the bad kind. People are often reminded of #2 when we think of a monopoly.

I'm no fan of P.T but I'm struck by his candor and willingness to share his entrepreneurial approach. Of course it's loaded with contrarian advise as can be expected. I especially liked his barbs thrown at business school. On the other had he says that copying and duplicating success is one of the best ways to advance globalization, with which I agree. Of course then you see the full dilema of success: If it's that easy everyone will copy it, which pivots you back to his first principle: strive toward monopoly in your market, or better yet create a market in which the cost to competitors is enormous. So easy to say, so hard to do. It is said the average person has only one good idea in his lifetime, a genius maybe three or four. One reason this country and most countries have anti-monopoly laws is to keep business from becoming overly powerful and accrue to themselves outsized wealth and influence. In the US that all went away with Regan and now we have a plutocracy that can dominate the marketplace and politics. No wonder Thiel has become a fascist. It works great for him! Not so for US.
