Fascinating Lycian Tombs of FETHIYE, TURKEY

Fethiye is a harbor-front town known for its secluded nature, Lycian ruins and extreme sport activities too. It was the final town that we had our rental car in Turkey and it was more of a rest stop for us so we mostly spent 2 chilled out days roaming around the ancient city of Telmessos and exploring our local neighbourhood.
We love ancient ruins and Fethiye has some impressive ones with the Amyntas (Amintas) Rock Tombs which date back to 350BC. The tombs are carved into the steep slopes of a hill and it's worth going up the steps to get a close up view of them as well as a great view of the city too.

Fethiye Old Town and Fethiye/Telmessos Theatre are also within walking distance of one another. The theatre wasn't open when we went but it seems like recently it has since opened to the public. We're unsure of the viewing spot we reached for the nice views above the city, but if you just keep walking up you'll eventually get there too.
In the town centre the local evening market is a great spot to visit for some souvenirs and gifts. The stall where we bought our little turtles from are all handmade by the lovely owner. Check out her Instagram to see her crafts:

Fethiye was formerly known as Makri (Greek: Μάκρη). Modern Fethiye is located on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos, the ruins of which can be seen in the city, e.g. the Hellenistic theatre by the main quay. A legend explains the source of the name Telmessos as follows: The god Apollo falls in love with the youngest daughter of the King of Phoenicia, Agenor. He disguises himself as a small dog and thus, gains the love of the shy, withdrawn daughter. After he reappears as a handsome man, they have a son, who they name 'Telmessos' (the land of lights). Telmessos joined the Athenean-Delos Union (Delian League) established in mid-5th century BC. and, although it later left the union and became an independent city, it continued its relations with the union until the 4th century BC. GREECE everywhere in Minor Asia!!!

Ok I think I am finally up to date on your videos! Awww that food opening was so good, made me hungry! Yeah still wonder how ancient structures like that have been constructed! Wow no one there, maybe it was free day! Yeah 200 steps and later in the evening when cooler definitely a good idea! Wow what a legend that story, transformed into a puppy, is that what you said? Yeah must have taken years to carve out the tombs! Interesting that the washing machine was right in the kitchen! Well done on the air conditioning once again! Yeah that kebab Peter looked really good and yeah great meat a must! Yeah was cool trees over the shops there! Shame those others were under renovations but at least you got out to adventure! heck the toys at the street market were so cool! You were sooo close to Dalyan! In that parking we have parked our van and spend the night for the same price 😁 Love how much you love history. Fethiye, Antalya and in general all this area has become super expensive as well. There is a massive migration wave that is making many cities and areas incredibly expensive. Let's see what happens in the future. You got my favorite dessert, kunefe! My mouth waters just thinking about it. That cheese is sooo delish Incredible view point, never been up there, will give it a try as soon as the crazy winds stop.

I think the best part of this video was when Peter tried kunefe/knafeh. Oh man, that's probably our most favourite middle eastern dessert. Underneath the pistachio is a pastry called kataifi, and usually in the middle between the kataifi dough, they either put cheese or cream. Both versions are delicious! I am salivating just thinking about it!

Hahahah tbh we didn't have high hopes for the chinese food 😂😂 reminds us how lucky we are living in Auckland! I think it's probably the pide for us.. from the nice lil local neighbourhood store and the friendly family ❤️ Food was also cheap but delicious! Total comfort food. Also after 3 months in Turkey, we felt like that place still made it best! We're almost near the end of our Turkey videos now.. only a handful left to share.. the time has just flown by! Did Peter tell you about all his surgeries since we've been back? 😅

Yes he's all good thanks! And yeah there were those and a more recent one.. he had an unsightly cyst growing on his neck so had it cut out the other day. He currently has some zombie looking stitches and is loving it 😂😂 Dr said it's definitely just a cyst and nothing dangerous but they've sent it off for biopsy just in case anyway 👍🙂

Kas was one of our favorite places in the region though it was quite small. It has a charming feel to it. We've even considered moving there for a while 😅 so we'll be a bit biased with this answer.

To add though, if you're into more adventure activities like paragliding Fethiye is a popular spot for that 🙂 also has a lot of historical ruins.
