This mash-up absolutely slaps! What else from Voctave should I check out?
@nickthedreamer443411 ай бұрын
For another killer mashup, you should watch Voctave's "Poor Unfortunate Souls/I Put a Spell On You" medley featuring Rachel Porter. And, since you already reacted to their Princess Medley (which features the ladies with each having a solo), I'd also recommend that you watch their "Disney Showstoppers" video as well as their "Disney Heroes and Villains Medley" which features the males having their own solos this time.

Yes, Kate Lott (shorter blonde in the white sweater) is their soprano 1 or coloratura soprano while Tiffany Coburn is Theo soprano 2 or soloist. If you really want to hear Kate hit a high note, check out Mary Did You Know with Mark Lowry. She hits a G6 in it. During the Disney Princess Medley which you reacted to, she hit an F6, twice. I hope you check out Your a Mean One, Mr Grinch by Voctave. Really shows off their basses. And more of how Voctave loves to just have fun while singing.

What's even more impressive, is that there are actually two basses singing throughout the entire song, but sound like one voice. 9:27 - The man highlighted is Tony DeRosa. He is not the low bass as suggested. He typically sings baritone or lead. He is a four-time gold-medal champion in the International Barbershop Harmony Society competition. The two deep basses are isolated at 11:11.

Completely fine to geek out about the basses. I love Kate’s (1st soprano) high notes (getting up to F6), but everyone does, so it’s nice to note how well their basses anchor the group.
@AudioVile10 ай бұрын
3 basses, 3 tenors, 3 altos, 2 sopranos. The basses aren't quite the Tim Faust/Geoff Castellucci bass, but they're really solid! The basses are in the back, on the right. The place where you froze to do Bahm Bahm... had one of the Basses in the front. Right behind him was Jamey (a tenor and the outstanding arranger). Kate is the Soprano 1 and Tiffany is the Soprano 2. They are ALL incredible!! From a 'vocals' perspective, they are my favorite a cappella group. As always, your analysis is welcome and informative. Great reaction!
@krystofdayne10 ай бұрын
You're right, the basses are the older gentleman (J. C. Fullerton) and the black gentleman (Karl Hudson). As far as I'm aware, both of them are quite low basses, but J. C. has since left the group and his replacement Aaron (who you can see in newer videos) isn't quite as low of a bass, filling more of a low baritone / Bass 1 role, so the low bass / Bass 2 role is now pretty much delegated to Karl. The tall guy (Kurt) is the baritone and the rest of the men are tenors, including the gentleman with the goatee who you first thought was a bass. His name if Tony de Rosa and he was the musical director of Voctave until his departure but he's quite well-known in general in the barbershop world. I agree though that his voice doesn't really fit his look xD He's not a high high tenor, but still clearly a tenor and it's actually a bit odd when you see him sing some solo parts in that lovely, clear tenor ^^ EDIT: To see a bit more of the men of the group, including the basses, I would very much suggest their Disney Heroes and Villains medley, it's one of their newer ones, and kind of the men's answer to their Disney Princesses medley which you already reacted to.

Another unique song is Stampede from The Lion King. It has a wonderful African feel to it.

It's very good that you're focusing some love on the basses, because most reactors get totally overcome by Kate Lott's high notes, and the poor basses are sadly underappreciated. I had the opportunity to see Voctave live a couple of years ago, and they lose absolutely NOTHING in a live setting -- they were superb. There are 2 basses, Karl Hudson and JC Fullerton. Also in the group is EJ Cardona (he speaks at the end), who has guest-starred with Voiceplay at least a couple of times and whose brother is EJ Cardona.

@PeterBarber The Bass Singer for Voctave is Karl Hudson. He's the Black guy. He really is an incredible Bass Singer. You guys (The Bass Gang) should consider doing a collab with him. If you want to hear him in his basement, you should check out Voctave's "Heroes and Villains Medley." He starts the medley off as Dr. Facilier singing "Friends On The Other Side." Something you, as an opera singer, would appreciate is that Kate Lott, Voctave's Soprano 1 (the lady in white), is a True Coloratura Soprano. Her range and, more impressively, her total control over all aspects of said range is inhuman. No song in Voctave's current library illustrates this more than their cover of "Mary Did You Know?" which they sang with the guy who wrote the song, Mark Lowry. They had him sing Lead while they provided the choral background. It's a truly stunning piece and, to the vast majority, the definitive version of the song.

This is a great bass song from Voctave, so many reactors totally miss those resonant Bb1s, glad you didn't. Bass singers are Karl Hudson who's still with the group and JC Fullerton who is no longer in the group. Also Kurt con Schmittou sometimes sings bass but I am not sure he is singing bass in this arrangement. I always liked JC's voice the best as he was older and has a very mature resonance to his voice, was sad when he left a couple years ago.

You should definitly check their Prince of Egypt medley. Audio only but AMAZING ! Suscribing because of more Voctave. Most of them have sung or are singing in The Voices of Liberty at epcot at Disney World in Florida. Jamie Ray formed the group and arranges all of their songs. He is the one armed tenor in the group. They have 2 sopranoes,3 altos/sopranos,3 tenors,2 baritone/basses and 1 sub bass. They have all been singing together for years, hence their wall of sound.

You can definitely tell Kate is in her coloratura range when she's doing that amazing diction. I think it's actually whistle tone, which is what operatic sopranos apparently used for notes above high C. Some call it flageolet, and at least one voice pedagogue (Justin Stoney) treats flageolet as different than whistle tone, but to me it seems like they're the same, just flageolet is better supported and more open like opera. I knew a guy who had an incredibly strong whistle register back in choir camp. He incorporated it into all of his solos. He sounded like that kid in Sister Act 2. It definitely can be very powerful, enough to be heard above other instruments or singers in a live setting without separate microphones.

Unfortunately they may not garner as much attention as other a cappella groups, but as much as I love the others, for me they are bar none, vocals of a cappella/choral mastery!! Their arrangements (by Jamey Ray, one of their tenors), their harmonies, vocal layering and especially their dynamics are simply breath-taking. My suggestions (beyond any/all of their Christmas music): You Will Be Found - done separately during Covid Disney Heroes and Villains - highlights each of the current men in the group Somewhere - highlights each individual group member Someone Like You feat. Jody Brayer Poor Unfortunate Souls/I Put A Spell On You feat. Rachel Potter Disney Love Medley feat. Kirsten Maldonado and Jeremy Michael Lewis Beauty and the Beat feat. Sandi Patty Being Alive feat. David Phelps (audio only); AND The Prince of Egypt Medley (audio only but you won't care) - I think their finest work so far!!!
