Have always said that Tatiana is the 'cleanest' growler. Her growls/screams/harsh vocals - whichever you wish to call them - are so easy to understand. JINJER is a band I always use to try and get my non-metal friends to listen to in order to hopefully get them into it for that exact reason. She's so easy to understand, even for those who don't listen to this stuff every day-all day like me.

I do the same. I like to share this song because I loooove breaking preconceived thoughts about metal being depressive. that may be a bold one but I feel there's more energy than depression in metal than pop these days. I travelled in music as I did in life, from "heh things are what can I do" to "let's react, build energy from wherever it comes" then my bff gave me that CD of metal and introduced me into it. I've found energy since then, I felt understood by some metal songs that told me "wake up". oh and btw, it's growl. harsh vocals is a big family, containing screams and its brother growl and screamo and some others. growl is recognizable because you can get it is by comparing to a dog growling: it's deep, kinda harsh but wet sound (compared to screeches you can say it's cat-related, more dry like a cat on a blackboard). I'm not mocking all these types of singing but metaphors help you figure it out. and one last, the pig squeal, but I think you get it.
@symphoofficial1726
@symphoofficial1726 11 ай бұрын
Fully agree. The only one I can think of that can think that's equally "clean" when harsh is Devin Townsend. Check his live performance of Deadhead with his group (he was coming off having the flu as well)
@anomymouse5043
@anomymouse5043 11 ай бұрын
This gets me started. I dislike some (many) growlers because A) there is no definite pitch, B) they deliver only words with the very same 'pitch' and/or C) you can't make anything from their lyrics. I get an impression that some of these cannot sing or deliver any note. Now check David Vincent, one of the first growlers (old Morbid Angel). There is a recent video from band Vltimas (Miserere), where David does the vocals. Also Tatiana can clearly vary her pitch in her growls.

See the look on Elizabeth's face when she watched this. I think this performance started her down the road of investigating these type of vocalists. This was basically live with a few overdubs. See a Jinjer live performance, like "Perennial" at Waken to see what she sounds like in that situation. Elizabeth also has an interview with Tatiana.

I don't think anyone's said this already. But given that the song is named "Pisces", the zodiac sign which symbolizes the twin fishes, the duality of Tatiana using false-cord vocals and her true-cord vocals makes a lot of sense. This song represents that duality along with adding in the elements of the story of a "Child of Neptune" (in order words a Mermaid/Merman) who feels this acutely and without fail. Another example of this is Yin and Yang with the concept of a darker side and a good side of a person. With Tatiana gradually building up the verses sung in her false-cord vocals, it shows that ultimately the darker side of the character she's portraying reigns victorious over the good side in the end. Which, unfortunately, can contribute to the innate core of human nature. Thank you for giving Jinjer a listen Peter! Admittedly, I couldn't stop cackling at your reactions to Tatiana's drop into her false-cord vocals. I've watched many reactions to when she does this, and it still cracks me up! That was one of the best reactions to this song I have seen in a while. You're not the first to say it "factory reset" your brain. Julia Nilon had a severe "factory reset" in her reaction.🤣 Jinjer is Ukrainian, from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where fighting started in 2014. It's sort of live. Recorded together in studio, it has some post production , with harmonies, but that is all her. Yes, Tatiana uses false fold for the harsh. Mostly self taught, Otep and Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) are some of her harsh vocal influences. This was a remake of an older song, done to showcase Vlad on drums, he had joined the band not long before this. Roman on guitar, and Eugene on bass.

@@ericpeterson7512 Right. And also some overdubs in the guitar. The lable "live session" is a little misleading. It's not a pure live performance, it's like a "enhanced" live performance, like if a band would record the complete basic track together, but that's not the finished product. I think they even have some backing stuff running from tape (or computer these days) during their concerts. Still it doesn't take anything away from the amazing talent all 4 of them have.

Vortex is one of the newer releases that I like. If you're going to dive in, their catalog is deep and eclectic I think.

Excellent job! I never get tired of seeing people discover Jinjer exactly as I did, by experiencing this very video. So many other tracks to experience now including a couple of live performances of Teacher Teacher and Who is Gonna Be The One. Enjoy! 🤘😫

for Tatiana singing more different styles, try Judgement & Punishment (live vocal), Teacher, Teacher (music video), Perennial (live at Wacken), Who's gonna be the one There's a lot more of course, but these will give you an overall impression. There are no bad songs by Jinjer. They are very skilled and professional.

I'm 4 days late commenting so no one might read this, but oh well. Remember the Pisces symbol represents a duality in personality. Just like in this song. The whole band is very talented. Tatiana is a vocal beauty and beast. She is seriously talented and captivating. Yes Tatiana uses her false vocal cords to do hash vocals/grawls in a healthy way. I Seriously recommend Teacher Teacher official video Tatiana's vocal translations are seamless and mindboggling. For very very good live performances definitely react to Perennial live at Wacken pronounced Vaw-ken as it's in Germany. Her stage presence is incredible. Also check out Judgement and Punishment Tatiana's (one take vocal) live performance version. It has possibility a suprising musical influence that's very cool and you get a closer look at her throat, posture changes and vocal techniques. There's even a cute cat in the beginning of the video. I always suggest people new to Jinjer to read through the lyrics before listening to a particular song. I found that helped me adjust when I was new to this type of hash vocals/grawls. Also Their songs get even better once you understand the meaning behind the lyrics. Each Jinger song is unique.

Thank you for a good reaction, and welcome to the world of Jinjer. I promise you, this is just a very little bit of what this band can do. Pisces is the gate way drug, but the real high is in the next songs!! They are super creative, mixes genres left and right, weird time signatures, and then they have this singer who is insainly talented. I have seen an interview with Roman, the guitarist, where he says that there are still times when they play live, where he and Eugene, the bass player, lock eyes and is like, “what the fuck did she just do??” Perennial-live from Wacken, Who is gonna be the one-live, the Judgment and punishment-vocal one take version and Teacher Teacher, are the ones i would like to recommend, if you want to see more.

Elizabeth's (The Charismatic Voice) reaction to this song/video is quite entertaining and instructive - well worth the watch 🙂 The thing that almost no reactor I've watched mentions is that in her guttural/growl voice, Tatiana manages to produce sufficient harmonic content within the noise that (in certain times - not always) a careful listen can detect both a root note and a 5th. The place I hear it the most is in her final "Emeralds are ripped a-wa-a-ay". Great reaction and great content - thanks!

I love those opera singer reactions videos. I'm a metalhead, but i'm singing mostly gregorian chants in a choir. I learn so much about vocal technics through those videos (and The Charismatic Voice's videos too), thank you very much for that !

Great reaction, Peter. Tati is such a fantastic performer, musician, and lyricist. I've seen them live 3 times now, and she and the band are probably the tightest band performing right now. You mentioned Vlad, the drummer; this video was done to introduce him as their new drummer. He is fantastic, but only picked up the drums after his previous band needed a new drummer. He's a classical pianist by training.

When visiting underground death metal festivals, there's a lot of female death metal vocalists these days. And I mean A LOT of good ones. That said being able to switch between cleans and growls is difficult for both men and women and it's always impressive. Mikael Åkerfelt of Opeth and Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis do this super well too.

I work concert security in Albuquerque at The Sunshine Theater. Been doing it for 15+ years. Needless to say, I’ve seen a LOT of metal acts. Jinger opened for a band back in 2019 and this was almost exactly my reaction! I had to get closer to the stage to confirm it wasn’t two different vocalists. Their sound and her vocal talents set them apart from all other metal bands. I was instantly a fan, so much in fact that I completely forget to this day who they opened for. They stole the show.

To your point about the volume of the harsh vocals, there is one exception to that rule. Alex Terrible often performs live without a mic. I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing him live yet, but it seems to be true. Check out Slaughter To Prevail’s usual first reaction “Demolisher” or their newest song “Viking”.

You should check out Perennial live at Wacken. Its toward the end of their set and when shes speaking to the crowd shes winded but while doing the clean and harsh vocals she does it perfectly. She also has a fantastic stage presence. Amazing breath control. Also, Alex Terrible often drops his mic and growls loud enough you can hear him toward the back. Hes pretty loud without a mic.

Not screamo - "growl" is what you're looking for 😄 She's amazing and I LOVE this song, gives me chills every time. I also have naturally low chest voice and it's always really cool to hear other women that do as well (makes it SO much easier to sing along lol). I think the song's name gives away the duality of her style here - the Pisces zodiac sign is 2 fish swimming in opposite directions, so thematically, it's perfect.

I LOVE Jinjer and Tatiana is the greatest singer I've ever heard. I love your analysis. I've watched several "reaction" videos to this song because they crack me up so much. You break things down on a technical level far more than anyone I've seen and it's great. I've heard the whole "false folds" thing before but didn't know what it meant. You actually explained it. Thanks!!
