Peterbilt 359 Restoration Ep.70 Hose Clamps & Heater Cores

Picking up where I left off in the previous episode, I start tackling the HVAC system inside the truck replacing the fan heater, valves, cables and clean the gummed-up heater core. Then I complete the install of the new coolant lines, put the lower dash back together, poured in hundreds of dollars of official CAT coolant and fired up LBL to see if its finally making heat.

Would also like to add that I kid a lot in my videos but wanted to clarify that coolant is extremely poisonous to all living things even when its diluted 50% with water. Please exercise caution when working with it including proper PPE like face protection, gloves, etc and be sure to properly clean up any spills and dispose of any old coolant properly
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts

I've done heater cores and rebuilt heater boxes when all the foam on the node flaps deteriorates, actuators, and of course final stage blower resistors since they're such a common failure point. This job is SIMPLE in your rig compared to like 99% of cars and trucks. The cores especially are almost always BURIED and the entire dash usually has to come out. Sometimes you can get lucky and you just have to pull the center console, kick panels and or glove box to pull the cores. The resistors and motor itself is usually simple in most stuff, just pulling the glove box or just the under dash kick panel. Peterbilt was nice to give you the amount of access that they did.

WOW..what should I write in the comments here??? I saw all the episodes and first I have to say: I see a man who's working with his brain. There is no work done by botch. You have a lot of mechanical understanding and knowledge. The first step to be successful! You are not to be scared to work on bad outside weather conditions, especially on winter time. Now you have your shop and it's more comfortable for you and your healthy. What you are doing with this rework/restoration on this truck is unbelievable. And it is really worth to see all the chapters. There is no boring episode for me. The most important part to restore a truck like this (the Kennys too)is to have a running/working engine I think. I came over from the American Truck Simulator because I want to know what's inside the real trucks, how do they work, what's the technic behind them. I learned a lot of...and I love the old trucks. The 359 takes me back to my childhood. Dad had a 79 and a 82. Yours is a dead ringer for his 82. He had a Cummins and 13 speed in his. I made a lot of miles in the passenger seat as a kid. Learned to drive a stick in the 79.

Mornin Mark I don't envy you working on heater cores, never a nice job. Me and another fella fixed one on a 77 Mack in 25 below weather between High level and Rainbow lake, that was about as much fun as pullin yer pud with boxing gloves, but we got it done he had heat all the way back to Edson. Galvanized sheet metal for the top of your shiny new work bench. 24 gauge works well. Easy clean up when you make a mess on top. 👍

Hook up an old vacuum cleaner up to the vent on your sand blaster cabinet vent it will help with visibility when blasting

Oh that under dash stuff is so easy to put off because it is unpleasant, but getting it done feels good, maybe not as good as the heat is going to feel in winter time, but very good in itself. I hate getting in to a heater care or working on the valves. You are making old little by little better all the time.

I worked for a guy once who didn't believe trucks needed heaters. If there was an issue with the heater he would just loop the lines. He also didn't trust drivers to keep an eye on the temp so he would hard wire the Horton fan. In winter the engine would run at around 50 degrees C. A 20 year old truck that leaks air around all the seals in -5. You couldn't even pull up and warm our hands on the engine because it was cold too! It was punishing. Once I had 2 pair of tracksuit pants and jeans, 2 jumpers and a jacket, and was wrapped in a blanket. And was still cold.

Mark, I have done the exact same project of repairing and replacing the heating and cooling system in my 359's. The heater core that was clogged with debris means you have even more clogging in front of the AC core. You can see this by gently raising each flap in front of the screen near the door hinge opposite of the outdoor vent intake. One side brings in fresh air and other side recycles the indoor air. You will find that side of the AC core is really clogged up and would let a lot more air through. Best to run compressed air under the flaps with the heater core out (before you put it back in). Made HUGE difference in the air flow and even more so for using the defroster. Day and Night difference. Maybe you can try using a vacuum hose with a narrow end to such the AC radiator clean but it will not do as well as blowing air from the back side and opening the outside vent behind the engine air cleaner to exhaust all the dust and grit stuck to the AC core. I was watching and hoping you would get that when you saw your heater core was dirty. That dirt came from the other side of the AC core. Like your videos. They save me a lot of time. Only this video was like reliving a nightmare. :)

As you get older, winter gets longer. 30 years ago my truck heater quit, was sent on a run out in BFE. There was a little snow and I had to stop a warm my hands on the stack’s heat shield. Thank God I didn’t have arthritis then.

Mark have a look on e bay at the chinese diesel night heaters ,in the uk you can get one for less than £100 so id guess it wont be to much more at your end .They come as either a sealed unit with diesel tank or you get th conventional type that you fit a stand pipe to your diesel tank .I got the complete unit with seperate tank to save tapping in to my fuel lines . They are fab and very economical on fuel . Mine has a remote so you can set it away whilst in bed if it got cold .They are a a bit bigger the contained unit and red in colour .Take a look and see what tickles your fancy . You get alot cooler weather there and its far quieter than having the engine tick over all night . 🙂God bless !

@Jim jibroni I dont see your sense there the whole point of it is that it works in cold temperatures! I and many others have no issues .Not good to have fake pig piss motors running all night (def) It is meant to be inside anyway the boxed ones and it would probably fit under bed .Exhaust and intake are underside and dry . Nearly every truck in the uk has them and have had for the past 20 plus years thanks to eberspacher and webasto but the cost is quite high ,Hence chinese ones . So i dont see any point in further discussing the matter.They work in the cold very well !

A word of caution,always secure any motor when you power them up un attached,A friend was diagnosing an audio fault a few years back and had quite a bit of the dash dis assembled. He cycled the ignition but un knowingly he'd had inadvertantly at point in the dis assembly knocked the rotary fan switch to an on position,the fan powered up while hanging on its loom in the passengers footwell,proceeded to spin out of control and the plastic drum type blade assembly then disintegrated on contact with everything around it, with his face about 18" from the fan and he lost an eye .be careful, remembering that direct battery power is full speed!

I remember changing one of those out in Lincoln Nebraska one night. I was sleeping when I was wakened because it was soo cold ( - 64 outside ) the fan motor gave out. luckily the shop had a motor. Good times..............not really.

It’s crazy with the differences in regions. In Canada he is worried about heating but in Texas we worry about cooling. I could care less if the heater works in my Mack or not. We normally only get like 2 to 3 weeks of actual cold temperatures here.

Friend when you see the heater core fins plug ĺike that it is usually signs that your evaporator core is has a small leak ,the A/C has little mix with freon sticks to everything and dust and dirt you have plugged core fins ,then air can't travel through . You end up with poor heating

Another job well done, Mark! I remember working on a lot of fans that looked just like that in commercial HVAC systems, just with motors set up for mains voltage instead of 12vdc. I thought of channeling a bit of Johnny Cash & say you got it one piece at a time, but this costs several dimes. All joking aside, you have a NICE truck, BUT some day it will be an EXCELLENT truck! The other thing about 70s & 80s trucks, they are pretty simple & that makes them dependable.
