Try taking a propane torch to the birdy and then scrape it up. Used this method before although never on a decal that old. I think it would be worth a shot.

With regards stripping paint ( and anything else you need ) two words: Muriatic Acid ( hydrocloric acid / pool acid) works awesome, easy to neutralize and its fairly cheap. We used to use it all the time to strip whole cars down back in the day. Its an old shade tree trick for us poor folk. haha!

Goto Canadian tire and goto the paint/hardware section and get a 4lt tin of MEK. Methel Ethel ketone. It is the base ingredient of paint remover. Soak it in a rag and leave it on the decal. Cover it with plastic so it dosent evaporate off the rag. Used it lots in the aircraft industry.

@kevinjones7555Ай бұрын
Just a little tip. I noticed when you sprayed the test panel you used a back and forth overlap with the base coat. Don't do that with base you will get tiger stripes. The nice thing about base/clear is you can spray the base every which way just enough to achieve hiding and to even out the metalics then do your cross cut overlap with the clear. Also if you want a lighter blue use a light primer as well as darker primer for darker blue, yeah I know I didn't need to tell you that part.
@mjvan7980Ай бұрын
If you use adhesive remover or similar, soak it down and then tape a black garbage bag over - try to get air out. Let that sit in the sun for a few hours, the heat helps get the old adhesive to start loosening.
@robertwilbert1317Ай бұрын
You doing a good job mark…I always say body work is 95% and the paint job is 5%…it takes time to get everything smooth….cant wait to see the painting process….the end result is gonna be sweet
@gregorystewart6539Ай бұрын
I am totally loving the blue with all the metallic. Perfect!!! The stripe layout will be more complex. Some of the 80's trucks had complex overlays across the hood. Please keep to the old themes and perhaps look to David Hodgeman, now the owner of Southern Pride Transport, and a Peterbilt he called the Mean Green Money Machine. 600 Hp KTA Red Top Cummins with all the extras. Nice paint scheme. Featured in OverDrive maybe 1980. Also, another Peterbilt, this one The Beer Man ran South Cal years ago. Spectacular, but Green and Gold. The striping layout was unique and eye catching. Straight blue, maybe we need a pause on that. It will be fine but......do it once and do it right!! Those guys used Imron. You will not be doing that.
@sesampleyАй бұрын
As far as removing the paint and decal from the hood you might try using spray on caustic oven cleaner. Easy Off is a brand here in the US that is widely available and well known. Work in a small area at a time. The big secret to using strippers is the not let the stripper dry out, some guys apply the stripper and then put plastic wrap over it to seal in the chemicals and stop evaporation of the product.

Mark, you have great attention to detail! Your comment on paint efforts near 14 minutes is valid - where it is “good from far, but far from good” - LBLwill not be in that category! Keep up the great work!

Keep up the good work 👍🏻🇨🇦🍺🍺
@ridethroughlifertlАй бұрын
What you can also do is put your chemical of choice on the paint and put saran wrap on top so it doesn't evaporate or off-gas. It might help. I know it works with oven cleaner - and depending on the type of paint it is, oven cleaner might actually strip it down also.
@chrisstokes5113Ай бұрын

Good morning Mr. twin sticks you continue to be an inspiration take time to go to the Lesco truck show. We can wait. I still have a standing bet with myself that you were going to take a micrometer and go over every hut bolt on a little by little and replace the ones that are sanded down, just a hair beyond what your tolerance will stand for lol enjoy the work on the truck. It’s the journey not the destination.

You cannot rush Perfection Mark. We understand it takes time on removing paint and sanding an body work. Mark when you go down to pickup engine for the Trans Am you can stop by a Auto parts store and pickup some airplane stripper paint remover. It might be tough to cross border but maybe not. As long as it is still sealed.
