In these days of preservation, we forget how filthy the railways were at the end of steam. Brilliant footage.

Absolutely fantastic 👍🏻 it reminded me when I as a little boy back in 1967 with my Grandad standing on Lowton-St-Mary’s station watching the end of steam ☹️ We didn’t have a movie camera to record it all what a shame 😢

This is simply stunning. Never have I seen vintage steam railway photography like this. Wonderful clarity with the old cine reproducing the atmosphere of the final days. Beautiful juxtaposition of steam against the Dales backdrop-just as I remember it. And so many shots from angles and of things not usually featured on archive steam footage. I know what people have said about the music, but I think it complements the footage really well and accords a romantic and nostalgic tone to it.

Fantastic footage of the last days of steam in the Skipton - this is just how I remember it as a young child. And I knew Ken Ellwood well: spent many a worrying time sat in his dentist chair in Skipton, staring at the large scale model of a steam engine on top of the cabinet...

Thank You. My Dad would be amazed that so many people have seen this previously unseen footage in such a short space of time! I have a photo of the Model Loco you mention sitting on his antique dental cabinet in the surgery. Cannot attach it here though. It might have bought back some more painful 'dental' memories!

@@PeterEllwood - you are very welcome. I also remember your dad and his traction engine appearing at various galas and events over the years around the Craven area.

@@PeterEllwood its really amazing seeing the little lad watching the steam engines going past. I wonder if he was older enough to understand that they was in the process of being taken out of use and replaced by modern motive power? being Born in 1962,63 my Mum would have seen something of that change of motive power on the railways as she spent her childhood in Manchester. my Grandma went to work on a steam train in the 1950s.

Interesting. Kodachrome retains color really well and your films are very clear and a superb record of the end of steam.

I photographed bith Bahamas trips and posted photos on Facebook. It was 1st time I had seen her in steam.

Attempted to film the trip using the same 16mm Cinecamera my father used in the 1960s and 70s. I don't think my effort will be as good as his though--still waiting for the film!
@eaglesfield1025 жыл бұрын
I admire your dedication to use 16mm film, it would be far easier these days to use a modern 4k video camera and a lot easier with the editing. But I do look forward to seeing more of your films and I like what David said, just ignore the negative comments. Some people are never happy. I had negative comments about music I had added to a film where I forgot to turn on the microphone but people don't realise you can only add sound that is not copyrighted.
@SuperArtmachine4 жыл бұрын
I like the music sound track so don't share the view of some comments on your page, the film is a really record of a family sharing a experience. I have heard voice overs explaining railways before, I really do not think this film needs that it speaks volumes without any words and we all have the ability to create our own story so for me this a absolute fantastic film thank you

whats nice about it is it captures the whole family being dragged along,,,, because dad wants to film trains and this must have happened so many times,, those poor suffering wives,,, but this is so lovely and really well filmed and put together,, well done,, one of the best i have seen,

@@PeterEllwood agree totally,, you can see everyone is enjoying themselves i missed the end of steam as born in 69 but my dad was a fireman and he was made redundant with the passing of steam so we were dragged too around albeit a few years later,,, when the steam ban ended

I agree with Andy Tunnicliffe, great film but quite inappropriate music. This is not a negative comment, just a comment. Much better idea would be to record some informative voice over, giving times and locations wherever possible. The music is just piffle really.
