One caveat I'd throw out there if you are basing your choice on handicap, is understand WHY you are at your handicap. When I was around an 18, it wasn't my ball striking that was the problem. I just never saw a 3 putt i didn't like. Once I got with a decent putting coach, i dropped to a 6 handicap. I was using Titleist AP2 the entire time. So just adjust your scale accordingly.

I’m a 15 handicap and was recently fit for Mizuno’s. I really wanted the 225 Pro’s as I love the look of those irons. However, the JPX923 Forged provided me with much more consistent performance and are now in my bag producing great results. Just another example of why a good fitting is so important.

@anthonycarney3128

@@MrSupermugen not untrue but that’s why places like Golfbidder exist. If you were fitted for a nice set of Mizuno JPX 923 a year ago, and have already improved to where something more bladey would progress your game, provided you have looked after your Mizunos, they would still fetch a decent amount on resale. Same deal with moving on from game improvement irons. In fact, you’d probably have even more chance of someone bidding on your game improvement irons since new golfers don’t want to spend a tonne of cash on clubs they are just trying to learn how to hit.

I've fluctuated between a 0-3 handicap over the last 10 years depending on how frequently I play and practice. Mizuno has consistently made irons that work well for me and I've played the Mizuno JPX 919 tour's for the last several years. From what I hear they are fairly similar to the Mizuno pro 223's. I like having a little extra forgiveness than a blade iron but also still keeping a fairly accurate club.

I went along to a Srixon fitting day and the guy pointed me to Cleveland Launcher XLs with stiff graphite shafts to raise my ball speed and, oh my God, it was like hitting butter. I managed to get the distance I should have been for my very high handicap and I'm loving playing even more, and I can keep up the pace with my mates because I'm now not topping, slicing or hooking every shot into trees and bushes. two questions... 1. what about lefties? Mizuno for example makes great clubs but tends to limit their selection for lefties. 2. where do you stand on club fittings? recommending 2nd hand clubs is a great way to update gear in a bag at a discount but the confidence knowing that the length, lie, shaft flex, shaft weight and grip size are fitted specifically to your swing is very confidence inspiring... Have a set of fitted clubs means that every time I miss a shot I know now I can't blame the gear.

Been playing 3 years now and at 15 handicap and find the Srixon z785 irons are great! Looking at upgrading to the ZX7 MKII or some Mizuno irons next season though

I think the Z785 feels and especially looks better than the ZX7. I have tested the ZX7:s several times. Also hit some Mizuno 223:s, which are somewhat equivalent but didn't like them as much.

The Vapour Pro Combos are the greatest set of irons ever made. I adore them even being a little above the 5-10 handicap range. They launch high and also provide brilliant forgiveness. I was surprised to see you giving them some love Pete!

No BS: I bought my first iron set when getting back into the game in 2019 from golfbidder (RSi1) and although I will eventually get fitted some day, I knew of golfbidder bc of your & Rick's challenge and I am still very happy with my purchase

I had the RSI1 from 2015 to when i replaced them with PXG 0211 this year. They were great irons and I only replaced them as all the face slots seemed to be breaking apart and they were losing pop. Was happy I purchased them and gamed them for so long.

The clubs I prefer are my T100s. They took the place of my AP 2s that I used for 2 sets over 10 years. You can’t beat ‘‘em for feel and performance

I went and got fitted at Club Champion 4 weeks ago for a full bag fit. I hit some balls with the 225's and a few other irons. I also hit some balls with ZX5's and preferred the Srixon's to the Mizuno's and other brands. I got them fitted with Fujikura Axiom shafts with an extra inch in length. I'm 58 pretty unfit and play off 14 and these go a bloody mile and feel amazing.

I love that you went Nike! I just bought a set of the VR pro combos (set before vapour) and they're absolutely brilliant! Was previously using Ping i500 and didnt get on with how much of a trampoline the face was. Plus £185 is a bit more palatable than £1200+ for a new set with fucked up lofts 😂

I currently use Mizuno 921 forged. But my previous set were the VR pro combos and I still use the PW (Mizuno I got 3-9 and went 46 in Cleveland zipcore to match my wedges and that was a mistake) but the VR pros were and still are so good

14HC golfer, recently got fitted and grabbed a set of taylor made M4 irons. Also grabbed the M4 driver. And im pretty consistant with striking but man noticed both with irons and the driver an off center strike still goes a decent distance and direction. I really need to shank one or fat it to create a bad shot.

8 handicap playing Callaway Apex Pro 21s. The forged feel is like warm sand trickling through your fingers on the summer beach. Shaping a shot is as simple picturing it. The launch is higher than snoop dog, but your length will have you walking like youre 8 feet tall. The forgiveness is the chainmail that keeps a rogue swing from disemboweling your round. The feedback is so clear a bird just flew into it. 10/10 irons. Dont get me started on Titleist woods though 🔥

I’m an 8 hdc and use P790s I got fitted for them when they released fall of 21. I almost went with the 770’s and though I think I would have played just fine with them, I put my ego aside and the extra forgiveness definitely comes in help on those off days.

I’m a 15 hc I play t100s which are supposed to be and the better end of things than I am. But I’ve been playing rentals the last few rounds. All have been taylormade stealth or stealth HD. I hit the more forgiving clubs much worse. Still been scoring well for me in the 80s

Great video! I’m a 20 handicapper looking to get some new irons. My buddy has a set of taylormade p770 forged 2017, are these a good set for me? They’re in great shape and we are talking half the price of retail or even used in the same condition. In terms of ball striking some days I don’t fell like a 20 handicap it’s just bad course management and lack luster short game.

I’m a 24 handicap and I thought the T Rails were basically an iron face glued onto a hybrid head but I haven’t hit this year’s model. People think the Titleist T300s are bigger because next to the other Titleist irons they are, they’re still smaller in game improvement land, and harder to hit too. I bought a bunch of 7 irons when seeing what I could hit and all of them were easier to hit than the T300 for me, including the Taylormade M6, the Callaway Rogue (has a nice offset), the Cleveland UHX, the new Taylormade Stealth HD (although jury is still out on this one), and the Callaway Apex cf19 (forged smaller head but still not too hard to hit). Does depend on shaft too though. I’m actually moving toward hybrids in all clubs right now except driver, wedges and putter because of improvements in technology and available clubs.

When I started I bought a half set which cuts costs but makes sense if you dont need 10 meterish gapping. Being a lefty, its obvious that the extra 5 million options available to right handed golfers is all about $$$

In 2023 going into 2024 I still play Ping Zing/Zing 2, King Cobra Oversized Irons and with a few Adam's Hybrid Irons and I couldn't be happier. Obviously NOT the latest and greatest tech but it suits my style and how I play. What works for some doesn't always work for everybody. Use and play what YOU like and fits your game, swing speed and obviously playing ability.

Most irons, outside of a blade, are suitable for most, a lot comes down to feel and personal preference. Having gone through the fitting stage, and like many being fitted with Cobra LTDx, I feel most people would benefit from spending money on lessons to improve swing and strike before spending too much on a new set of clubs.

Couldn't agree with you more. I have a friend who constantly encourages me to get "new" and "better" forgiving clubs. But I know that my swing and mechanics need far more improvement than new clubs alone would give me.
