I started playing 2 years ago. Borrowed a mates taylormade tourpreferred cb’s and got hooked. I then bought paradym x irons for a bit of forgiveness. Got down to 4 handicap. Then recently won a golf competition for any titleist irons and SM10 wedges. So I got custom fitted for T150 in 7-PW and T200 in 4-6 irons. I just think whatever works and scores the best. I loved my paradym x irons and they worked great apart from a couple of hot ones over the last 2 years. Just go out and enjoy it regardless of the score. I swear my handicap came down far lower than I expected because I just don’t care if I hit a bad one. They happen, I just love being out with mates

I learned using blades, in the early 80's even junior sets where blades. I can't hit other irons, they feel awfull, look chunky and even features like hoilow face irons etc just don't do it ffor me. Feel is everything, I know where the balls gone using a blade even if blindfolded, if I hit a bad shot It tells me by stinging my hands. Come to think of it they could be the best irons to learn with :D

Literally what I am going through right now after picking golf back up after playing when I was younger. Someone got me the 400s to get me playing again and I can't stand them. They work for who they are designed for. Plus they were free so I'm not complaining too much. But Lord did they destroy my game😂😂😂. Finally going to get fit for some new ones this weekend after playing them for a year. Was shooting in high 70s-80s so they were not terrible. But also with the regular flex and my swing speed it was a nightmare 😂😂. Cannot wait to have clubs long enough and designed to me especially as a taller player. They were the orange dot also. My back is already smiling.

I’m a 4 handicap and I play T-350’s. Easily the most fun I’ve ever had playing golf. I can work them up, down, left, right…the game is hard enough. I played AP-2’s for 10 years, and I thought those had the perfect balance of playability and forgiveness. Until I got fitted for the 350’s. Fitter was like, “sure you don’t want the T-200’s?” Nah, I play once a month if I’m lucky, and I like shooting in the 70’s.

It's not just about the score Peter. I've got some Miura blades (20hc here) and I only hit the sweet spot occasionally, but when I do it makes it all worthwhile. The feel, the sound, the flight. For that brief moment in time I'm a god. My BiL gave them to me btw. I never would have considered them otherwise but I thank him every time I get it right - about 10 shots a round, which makes him my most appreciated relative. Apart from my wife of course.

Started using my 695MB's when I was still a 20+ HC. I was stagnant with the Callaway SGI irons I was using. Yes they got the ball up, but it was too difficult to tell if it was an actual decent strike, or was it the club compensating.... I love these old 695MB's, especially with corded grips. You really feel which part of the club face made contact. My GCIN dropped from 20 to 8 in three seasons with the blades.

Manufacturers make what consumers want, they wouldn’t make super forgiving clubs if folk didn’t buy them. I played blades for years, plus 4 handicap and swing speed of 125 with driver. Now age 67, had a TIA (small stroke) lost the ability to walk. After lots of physio, i now play golf again, doing all the exercises, stretching etc, and like with walking had to learn to play golf again, now driver swing speed is 95. I got fitted for a range of clubs, and my irons are super game improvement, not because of my ball striking, still hit the middle, but i am not that strong, super game improvement gives me my distance back, trouble is gapping because of the jacked lofts, so 5 wedges in the bag. I tried the Wilson forged irons, but didn’t get the distances to compete at the course i play. So sorry i will play super game improvement, regardless of what a KZbin spouter says. I am on my way back to scratch, and like Monty it will be with game improvement irons.

Hi, As an old fart golfer we, as in EVERYBODY, played blades back in the day. Yes they demanded more concentration and time but when you hit it right there was no question about it. At 73 years old I still play with my old, but still in excellent condition, Mizuno MP33s. I look at it as if you play tennis with a Prince style 120sq.in. racket then cavity back irons are for you. But if you walk on the court with a 90 sq.in. racket then control and feel are the most important thing in your world. Also I tried CB irons and their front to back variation in distance was crazy to me. Just my thoughts on it....

I play blades. Get out a couple of times a week in the summer and flit between 2-3 handicap. I genuinely don’t see any benefit to not playing blades. Blades are consistent and that’s what I like. No flyers, no random shot carrying 10 yards further. If I don’t strike it great I honestly don’t see that much of a drop off. Cavity backs aren’t miraculous. You can’t hit it out the middle and toe and hit it the same distance.

You’ll often find them longer, hotter with stronger loft none of these attributes will improve your pitching and shipping. Best advice from this club maker/fitter is 7/8-wedges (blades): 5-7/8 (Cavity Back) and 2-5 Hybrids or hollow bodies!

How much more forgiving are modern irons compared to forgiving tech from 20 years ago? I may or may not be asking this with Titleist 804 OS irons in my bag

In my opinion the current infatuation with getting “fitted” for clubs especially irons is somewhat absurd. I am sort of an advisor to my friends who shoot scores in the 80s and 90s and I have encouraged them to get fitted. However, the fact that their new clubs have been selected in that way doesn’t mean that they will shoot scores that are dramatically lower. Often I fear they believe that. You cannot buy skill. It doesn’t hurt don’t get me wrong. But…. I personally play Titleist CB irons. They are great. After all, they have won both the US Open and The Open Championship in the past couple of years. But I might go to pure blades again. Either Titleist or perhaps Mizuno. I don’t anticipate any significant changes whatsoever. I just like them. And that’s what counts.

Why do no pros talk about loft and d-plane when discussing blades? It’s not as simple as blades being”harder” to hit or “shorter” than the alternatives. Personally I use blades mostly because I like the look of them and that in turn gives me more confidence. Use whatever is going to make you have good/positive thoughts on your way round. And don’t forget to say whack when you hit them 👍

Played a blade, played a cavity back, played a game improvement, the results? Give me a cavity back. Not because I needed the distance, but definitely didn’t like the club ringing in my hand when I thinned it.

I played blades all last season and even though I could hit them they definitely didn’t help me. I’m still a very new golfer and it wasn’t a good fit. I switched to cavity backs this season and they already work much better and they go further even though I don’t think my swing is any faster

The problem is that everyone thinks they’re better than they actually are. I’d love it if people could put qualifiers to statements like ‘a consistent ball striker’… I consistently strike the ball. That doesn’t mean I should play blades. Even ‘out of the middle’ is for interpretation - I bet most golfers couldn’t point to the middle of the face on a wedge, for example. Go out on a limb. Say outright ‘if you have hit more than 2 duffed iron shots in your last 5 rounds of golf then you probably shouldn’t play these irons.’ (Or whatever your metric is)

Awkward thing for me is I’m a 20-25 hcp but play a Mizuno 243-221 combo set switching at 6-7 iron(I don’t use 241 because they spin less then 221 but I do use 243 because 223 feel really crappy to me). For me “forgiving” clubs don’t have enough loft and even with tons of tungsten in the bottom they don’t go up for me. And I hate fitters because no matter what you say once you say your 20 hcp or above all they want to give you is game improvement irons and don’t even want you hitting anything else even if irons are not where you are losing strokes. Most my issues are driving OB or 3 putts.

honestly, should be splitting pro cavity to general cavity backs. anything with a "power slot" etc are a very different club from pro cavity backs

I find that big cavity gave me over exaggerated distances. I shouldn’t be hitting 180 plus with an 8 iron. Makes it hard to judge. I feel that one step before blades are more realistic. More proper distances.

Blade or cavity, they all need hitting out of the middle to perform as designed. Personal choice of looks and good testing prior to buying is all that's required. Not a fan of putting irons into a category for certain players.
