I nearly destroyed my Porsche - a warning.

As a 56-year-old, I'm all for 'living while I'm alive'. That's part of the reason I bought a Porsche Boxster! But two weeks ago, I came within a millimeter of tragedy in that car because I was careless. I ignored two critical signs that something was seriously wrong with my car

They have nut with nylon or castle nut with a cotter pin. That prevents nuts from backing out.

You should also follow your own suggestion and get those fingers checked out as well. I’m a burn victim myself (38% of my body 3rd degree burns) from a cooking oil accident (I’ll spare you the details) and your fingers don’t look well. You may have severe 2nd degree burns which may need medical attention if you want them to heal correctly. Take care!

Glad nothing serious happened while you were driving, good reminder to be more careful and pay attention to signs of impending mechanical failure. I had something similar happen to me a few years back, I had rented a 981 Cayman on Turo for the day and was having a blast all day in some canyons ... right until one of the corners of the car started making weird noises and then shortly after that one of the wheels came off and left me stranded in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately I had slowed down and was looking for a spot to pull over when it happened, so I was only going maybe 30 mph or less. Definitely could have been a lot worse, if that had happened on the freeway but I consider myself lucky. As you might imagine, I now have a lot less trust or faith in renting other people's cars off of Turo... drive safe and enjoy in good health!

Sobering story Peter but honestly think that with the benefit of hindsight you’re being hard on yourself. We’ve all heard the odd noise or skipped some maintenance assuming that it would be okay. Agree with your comments on not driving when it’s not feeling right, but A Porsche service should have picked it up. It’s in the mechanics service manual. Do you service it at the Porsche centre, Doncaster or Brighton? Or independent? Keep up the great work on the channel.

It's a bit of a freak issue. Something might have happened, but it didn't. You weren't driving fast after the problem presented itself. Probably the worst thing that might have happened would be that the steering might have gone bad and you would have simply braked & stopped. I wouldn't sweat this! An interesting question is, how did that part loosen up so much?

Very lucky escape Peter. In 1981 my Mini got vandalised by someone probably from my girlfriend’s work ( which was full of men a can short of a six pack) who didn’t approve of my relationship . They undid the nut securing the front left tie bar which luckily for me only fell off at urban speed which caused me to swerve violently left. Had that been on the motorway which is where I was heading it probably would have been an entirely different story. Unbelievably I found the nut kerbside about 50m back. Married said girl and got divorced 12 years later …. . All the best recovering from those burns they look extremely nasty . You are definitely right about life in your 50’s. Cheers 😀

had a similar experience driving my friend's Acura Integra years ago. Racing it at high speeds had no issues, later that day my friend drove his Integra on a low speed street going about 15mph and the whole front right wheel fell off (actually the lower control arm and the wheel). Luckily, it wasn't me at high speeds.

I now have a 981 Boxster, but for over 16yrs I owned a 986. Prior to selling the 986, I had my Porsche dealership completely replace all the suspension components. Unfortunately, they forgot to tighten one bolt on one of the coffin arms.... and didn't test drive it before handing it back to me. The result was an almost uncontrollable vehicle even at very low speeds. Frightening. Needless to say, they were very apologetic.

Hi Peter, so glad your ok, just back from glorious weekend in the highlands. Before I bought my Boxster 987, I had a Caterham about 1000 bhp per ton, 0-100 mph in 10 seconds. But a rash decision to buy ,after renting one, and other ego based reasons. Inevitably it ended in disaster, I wrote it of, with my son in the car. We sustained 20 stiches, broken ribs and it could have been worse. I think success is critical in life, for Doers, but so is fulfilment of your goals. Maybe getting the balance right is the key. First, I'm super happy that you escaped harm with only a lesson learned. That said, everyone should be extra cautious after having work done on your car. Don't ever assume that the previous mechanic didn't miss anything (even if that mechanic was you). Also, people should educate themselves about the signs of loose tie rods and worn wheel bearings. Both of these have pretty obvious signs (if you know what to look for), and both carry the possibility of absolutely ending you! On a much lighter note, Peter, would it be possible to share your filming setup for driving (including cameras & mounts)? I really like your setup, and have struggled to find good places to mount cameras on my 981 BS. Thanks, and here's to lessons learned and safe driving!

Wise words. For filming, I'm constantly changing things, but I use a mix of Delkin Fat Gecko suction mounts, Neewer suction mounts, an extension pole for off-side front/rear wheel action shots, a pair of DJI Action 4s, two Insta360 GO3s, and various mics (stereo is preferred), connected to the Zoom H1Essential 32-Bit Float recorder (32-bit helps with huge dynamic range fluctuations).

@@MegaNardman The Insta360 GO3S is amazing, and extremely versatile when to comes to placement and remote monitoring. But if you need longer run times or the ability to swap out batteries, the DJI Action 4 is very hard to beat. As for mics - inside the car, The Zoom H1Essential is small, light, and delivers excellent quality audio - in stereo. If you plan to run a mic outside the car, you'll want to connect a mic with a higher SPL rating than just the H1E, and one of the best performing (and best value) ones out there is the Rode VideoMicro.

Glad that in the end luck played a good hand and you got the car fixed before a bad day happened. Still though what caused the issue (loose nut)? If torqued correctly and checked as per the maintenance schedule even bumpy roads would not cause that issue? A pothole or something like that would have caused immediate damage and tow truck time I would think. The issue you had seems to be a gradual problem pointing to either a flaw with car maintenance or Porsche had something wrong. The latter is unlikely given that Porsche issues become internet fodder very quickly thanks to forum chat e.g. IMS bearing. So, maybe a garage did not do the right maintenance or a faulty part? Not looking for blame, more about finding the cause so that the right fix is implemented.

@@peterfritzphoto I am pretty tuned into change, I had my C63 in for service and on the way home felt a vibration under braking so turned around and took it back, it was nothing sinister just poor wheel balance. Also on my VR4 drove about 10 meters and the wheel was off and vibration evident, it turned out my wife drove over a soccer ball (her description) sized rock, bent the front rim and tie rod. I won’t bore you with when she drove over a bottle jack, the changed exhaust note made me stop and that’s when I noticed the cracked gearbox and oil on the driveway…….

@@peterfritzphoto really? i thought that was your point of the video, that you should not have kept driving. a few years ago, a friend bought a new porsche 911. he let me drive and in the first turn, i said something was seriously wrong with the left rear suspension. i warned him it was dangerous. saw him a year later and he said the left rear tire wore prematurely because a suspension link was bent because the fellow who transported it on a flatbed hooked a chain to it. he couldn't feel anything wrong and didn't investigate my concern. he was an idiot. you, on the other hand, had many indicators something was seriously wrong; clunking sounds followed by the steering wheel being off by 10 degrees was ample evidence something was wrong and was getting worse! if steering or braking starts deteriorating, stop immediately.

You could've literally fixed this at any time you got home just by lifting the car, taking the wheel off and inspecting yourself. Basic ratchet with the right socket would've been enough, or even a pipe wrench, and no need to stress over it or drive further to a mechanic and pay $$ for them to tighten a nut. True - I have tools, and I know how to use them (I installed the coilovers on my ND MX-5). As for the length of the video - it wasn't just about the tie rod end. The title can't explain *everything* in the video because: a) it's not possible, and b) it wouldn't make for a very compelling title. I explained what the video is about, right there in the intro: "This is a video about living while you're alive - especially in your 50s and beyond. But it's also about carelessness, and how just recently, my life came within millimetres of ending prematurely because of my own carelessness."

@@peterfritzphoto lucky for you it didn’t, I once brought a Porsche 944 with a dodgy MOT, I got it inspected by my local garage after an 8hr drive home in it from Scotland, they told me it was a death trap and all the sills needed doing, I obviously tried getting my money back but the guy done a disappearing act. I was lucky there too

Hmmm Pete l mean l only 5 odd years older than you so l don't think l have become an old fuddy duddy yet but l just feel if you want to go beyond the speed limits you should be doing it off road , on private property or a racetrack for the simple reason you could take the life of a person doing nothing wrong and this effects so many people, cars are not toys they are to get from A to B, have fun my friend but not on public roads.
