I've been squinching since forever ago...long before you gave it a name! The reason I always made myself squinch was because I'm one of "those" people who will invariably shut their eyes as soon as the shutter fires, and this method of squinching helped me control that. Amazing to see the impact in your video in terms of how much better everyone looks! It's so subtle but does make such a difference!

Something that helped me learn how to use just the lower lid is to squint or even close your eyes, and then try and open them only using the upper lids. This helped me get a feel for the muscles that are in use and now I'm able to move just the lower lids.

It isn't for everyone in every case. Squinching is specific to certain headshots and portraits. You wouldn't use it for example in a family portrait. It would look too weird. With Peter's type of photography, it def works.

Enjoyed the video. I figured this out myself eons ago. I call it "smiling with your eyes" and taught it to my children when they were young when I noticed I couldn't capture their adorable essence when I asked them to smile for the camera. When someone smiles without their eyes, the eyes show no emotion. If you covered the mouth, you wouldn't be able to even tell they were smiling. When someone smiles with their eyes and mouth, it looks natural, beautiful and they actually look happy! How funny you came up with squinch. My sister and I developed that word when we were kids which meant pull your shoulder blades back so we could button each other's dresses. Ha, ha.

There's a reason that this works so well, these muscles are involved in mainly positive expressions - happiness, calmness, kindness, concentration and confidence, pleasure/sexual pleasure, all cause us to raise our lower lids without closing our eyes. So yeah, I'm hooked.

Guy at 9:35 nailed it. But even though this will make you look more confident ( because that ever so slightly cocky squint looks great on camera ) most of these examples still doesn't look that good, proves that if you're ugly, that's pretty much it. It could also be that most of them looks even more awkward because they're thinking too hard on how to nail the look.

I can come up with three reasons why squinching works. 1. It is what we do when we try to look at things more carefully and concentrated so it makes you feel like people are checking you out more 2. Its the same muscles that happen when you smile/ laugh 3. Its what you do when its sunny so it seems like it is sunny which makes us happy.
