In this video I make a loose #tenon #jig that duplicates the killer features of the Festool #Domino - narrow and wide slots in a single jig. And yes, I had to go there with that 'ultimate'. 🤷♂️ Enjoy!

@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Put the bit in the router, and the router on the jig, and plunge until the bit touches the workpiece. If you’re using 18mm material and 40mm dominos you’ll need to add 15mm for the face mortice, and 25mm for the edge. You’ll find it easier with 5x30mm dominos as you can plunge 15/15 for face and edge.
@clearcut6818

@@10MinuteWorkshop thanks Peter. It's nice to have you answer me directly. The dominos I bought are 8mmx36mm. I guess I'll need to plunge 15mm in face and 21mm in edge? And is a 1/4” spiral upcut on a 18mm guide bushing OK?

As a long time subscriber and huge fan of your work, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for this! I’m part way through building it… I’ve tweeked the sizes as I’ve already got a big bag of 6mm loose tenons, and I’ve found a great manufacturer of router bits and other tools called RENNIE TOOLS near Manchester. Most suppliers only sell 6.3mm diameter cutters - which would be too sloppy - but they do several spiral up cut models at exactly 6mm. Could be a useful contact for you, as I know you ship router bits with your flat pack loose tenon kits 😊

This is great! Been considering buying a Domino for a while, but can never bring myself to pay that amount when it's for a hobby! Also, gives me a great excuse to buy a new router! One thing I like about the domino is the guide pins to align quickly for making multiple joints at even spacings. I wonder if a good accessory for making multiple mortises along a sheet could be a plug that goes into the previously cut mortise through the adjacent hole on the jig as a reference? I guess this may be difficult due to different size holes on the jig and different sized dominos, but may be useful if you're always using the same thing!
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I have the ‘reference pin’ idea in hand. The idea of the original pins in the domino was that you could ‘daisy chain’ them together just using the pins for reference. 👍👍

Love the jig. I see in the flat-pack version you've added positioning pins. What are you using for pins? Something I could find at my local hardware store? Oops! Found the answer in a comment from a month ago: 5mm clevis pins, brilliant as usual. I've found a solid carbide bit that's available in the US: Whiteside RU1805, 5mm cutter, 1/4 shank and 2 1/2 overall length. And reasonably priced. Also when building a version that will be easier to find a bushing for in the US, I'm going to use a 3/4 bushing and adjust the jig design to make it work. Keep up the great videos. Cheers, George

@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын

Of course the problem for your poor American cousins is to find materials in either metric or full width US Conventional units. AND to find a set of metric router bushings on USA Amazon, AND a 5mm spiral upcut bit on USA Amazon. I'm not so worried about the absolute centering of the guide on the material but you do need zero slop in the fit of the busing, all else is taken care of if you are careful to reference the same face of all your materials with witness marks.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Ай бұрын
If your commonly available sheet material is 3/4” then that’s what you should be basing the jig and the guide bush on. 🤷‍♂️ Mike Taylor at Taylor Toolworks does 5mm and 6mm spiral bits, and his own range of loose tenons. 👍

There are plenty of ways around it. UJK sell a metric set that includes 18mm, there are guys 3D printing them, you can get a 3/4” turned down to 18mm, make a sub-base to take the standard Elu/trend, there are relatively cheap brass porter-cable style sets for the Katsu that are available. 👍👍

Hello Peter mate.. Can I ask u a question about the TREND T4 plunge router u are using in this video?? I wanted to buy one but when I began looking into it and reading the reviews on it a lotta ppl were speaking about it in not a very good light. They were saying that the newer model is not as good as the earlier model which is why I was asking about it.. So my question is how long have u had ur T4 Router? If it's the newer model or most recent one then how have u found it? If it's a year or 2 old then do u know what some ppl have been talking about with the newer ones on the market?? I'm new to routers but I'm quickly learning and I would love ur opinion on the T4 if u have the time?? This is a brilliant video btw. Looks remarkably quick in use. I may have to reconsider my preferred dowels. :-) At the right price I might be in the market for the flat pack. Thanks for sharing. All the best to the two of you.

@@10MinuteWorkshop I’m not sure I am the right man to answer this Peter. But I will have a go in the spirit of being helpful. By right’ I meant the price that I’d be willing to pay for the convenience and guaranteed accuracy of the flat pack. I have no idea abut the overheads and costs needed to get the flat packs ready and out to people. I used to run a wee side hustle selling educational software and always argued that any school department could afford £39.95 without any great thought. So I’ll settle for £39.95 all in. TOPS. But much more than that I wouldn’t buy. TBH. Please don’t take offence. :-).

Are there limitations as to what dominos are compatible? If I get a 5mm bit I could cut for a 10mm domino but the depth might become an issue, what with the jig thickness. Cheers
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
The jig is made for 5x30 dominos in 18mm material, and 1/4” routers. Changing the bit allows you to accommodate a bigger domino, but you’ll need a longer bit to get the full 25mm depth because as you say, the plunge depth on smaller routers is restricted. 👍

I love this idea.... I have a festo domino cutter, but for multiple cuts a jig like this would be far quicker.... I think I've just found a wee project for a slab of composite laminate that I've been storing forever...! 👍🏻

Forgive me as i am new to the m&t part of woodworking. Why would you cut a narrow mortise on the edge and a wide on the face of the board.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Жыл бұрын
So the USP of the domino is that it’s a precision tool that lets you work loosely, by giving an option of a slightly wider slot in one face or edge. This gives you a little wiggle room when it comes to assembly, and doesn’t compromise on strength because of the glue area of the loose tenon - each face of a 5x30 domino had as much glue area as a single 6x30 dowel. This jig - and my flat-packed commercially available CNC jigs - are to the best of my knowledge, the only jigs that allow for the two sized mortises, without resetting a fence or moving a stop. If you haven’t caught it already, then the previous video to this may be worth a watch. 👍 Loose Tenon Basics [video 481] kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmmZgnqLo5yXd6s

Amazing and so simple! Can just make as many jigs as you need....Hilarious on F.O.G.. immediately changing the subject as the precious Domino suddenly becomes obsolete.. haha well done.

I enjoyed the video in 4k. You made it look so simple to make the jig, which I am sure it is. Great design too. One error I noticed. Sorry to mention it. But you used a pozidrive screwdriver to tighten a Phillips screw. Not only do you not get good purchase on the screw, with increased likelihood of cam out, but that practice will eventually ruin the driver and potentially mess up the screw! Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much for this Peter and Gordon. I’ve made a ropey version of this (first project on table saw so cuts aren’t great) but it is still good enough to allow me to join lengths of board together flush. For cabinet doors. Will probably make a neater looking version again.

Why do some of the slots need to be wider? Alignment? Doesn't that weaken the joint?
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
They don’t *need* to be wider, but it’s very convenient when they are, and as I say, it’s the killer feature of the Domino - a precision tool that lets you work loosely. And no, I’m not aware of any tests showing any weakness created by using a slightly wider mortise - loose tenons have been made this way for centuries - actually, millennia, as they date back to the Phoenicians. 👍

The only bad thing Peter is the price of the router bits. By the time you get a 5mm, 6mm, 8mm and maybe a 10mm you are looking at way over a $100 just for the router bits. If you wanted to make your own dominos say 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8" it would be a lot easier to get the bits. Just a thought.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hate to say it Noland, but I think you’ll find those domino cutters cost a fair bit more! Taylor tools have great 5 & 6mm bits for about $6 apiece, and there’s nothing to stop you making your own imperial dominos if it’s easier for you to get the cutters. 👍👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop You are right about the domino cutters but usally if you have a domino you get all the cutters too. I did check Taylor tools and found the metric cutters just wish they were carbide. Hey, thanks for the answer.

Hi Peter, will this work accurately on thicker stock? I need to make some internal doors from pine and I have promised to make my boys a bunk bed, and cant quite justify the price of a domino XL..! Many thanks Chris
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
You’d need to adapt the plans to suit the thickness of your workpiece, and it would be as accurate as you are! Personally I’d use off the shelf hardware for making beds - do a search for ‘bed fitting set’ if you haven’t come across them before. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop Wow! wasn't expecting a reply that quick... Just in the planning stages at the moment. I'm looking at bed hardware as well, but I have three clumsy boys who like to jump around in there room so it will need to be bomb proof. the bunkbed will not be a traditional one over the other but at 90 degrees to go along two walls and hopefully fit some of there furniture under there as well. Many thanks for getting back to me so quick.
