Really enjoyed that, it is a great design. Stupid how I've never paid that much attention to them, but they are pretty ubiquitous. You dodged a bullet with the bridle joint on a 5deg angle mind. I believe you of course, when you say you didn't notice it until it was too late. Millions wouldn't 😁

Our Bekvam is 25 years old and the timber is definitely thicker than one purchased by our daughter recently. Infinitely useful, it must be strong as it has held my enormous weight over the years on various painting, wiring and carpentry jobs. Great video and if you wish to test it put 20 stone of diy amateur on it!.

Hmm ... one thing i really like is that Work Bench with the many Holes ... where you can push down that nifty clamp. Looks *very* useful, in clamping down _any_ ... _shape_ or _size_ pieces to work on them with a variety of tools.

Great little stepping stool Peter ,now for the next one make the stool height and with two tip out steps on it ,you know that all fit inside the stool until needed ,myself i find i make crates out of a lot of the scraps ,they work great as a step ,sit on and putting stuff away,like more scraps of wood huh...lol

A big change to your usual projects. Looks very nice. I make a version quite frequently for friends and family. I use Marbu Decking ( Australian Hardwood), for the step with ridges up. As David below. Great Idea to use awl dots to mark up the joints.

Loved your idea of the tape to mark the position for the dominos, I’ve used this method when drilling multiple holes. Tape it first then mark the tape and drill the holes.

Yours is vastly better to look at even though you followed the design fairly closely. I think this reflects the fact that this thing, like a lot of Ikea products, is actually well designed but made to a tight budget. Your choice of materials looks beautiful and your piece doesn't have the ugly Ikea furniture bolts in it. This project was a good idea well executed.

Great looking build. I have 3 of the Ikea ones from the mid to late 2000s and they were a bit chunkier in those days. Same with the Kitchen Trolley in the Bekvam range. I suppose Ikea have slightly reduced the timber dimensions over the years for cost purposes.

My wife bought a long cabinet from IKEA recently and I was very unimpressed by their cost cutting. It's nothing like what they used to produce. It's 6ft long with a glass top and I can lift it off the ground without straining (I'm fairly weak too!). The panels are all hollow chipboard and when you shake them on assembly you can hear broken bits of chipboard (or dead insects or whatever) inside. It was inexpensive, but also felt inexpensive which was never the case with IKEA before

Nice work Peter. I have three of these stools from Ikea. The first one (a long time back) was in a much heavier wood than the other two and I was quite disappointed that they changed the wood to something much lighter. Still, not so heavy to carry I suppose. Very useful stools. Yours looks too nice to stand on.

Thanks Bob! Yes, I’ve noticed that a few recent Ikea items have been noticeable lighter/thinner than the originals, but wether that’s down to cost-cutting, efficiency, or reducing environmental impact is hard to say. 🤷‍♂️👍

And about two years ago I had the idea of making a second one because I had some (a lot) old beech flooring parts which could be suitable for that purpose. Now two years later, the plan and the flooring parts are still there but the DIM Bekvam step-stool not. I'm glad you made one and you should how it is possible to do it. But I lack 80% of your skills and 90% of your tools. I wonder how long time it took you to make it.

Thanks Hans! Always hard to put a time on things when you’re shooting video as that alone ads a factor of 3 or 4x, but starting with rough sawn timber to finishing with wax, whilst shooting video, took 2 days. So a fairly easy morning project I’d say, ifI our the cameras aside. 👍

Very classy. Could do a cheapo version from a single length of 3x2 CLS for about 4 quid but still a lot of labour.

This is so cool! I adore these stools and have a pair of them in my workshop for all sorts of purposes. I even have a couple 20mm hole drilled through the tops of them for ‘MFT-style’ clamps to be used. I’m no lightweight (110kg) but they’ve not creaked under me in years of use.

Over 30 years while raising a family in tiny house in London, I've hacked or copied many IKEA products. It's almost impossible to buy the timber and hardware for anything like the price of their ready to assemble items though used to replace their hinges till they raised their quality. Often trimmed them to fit which meant new fixing positions or reinforced them. Took 8 inches off a pine loft bed and hoped daughter wouldn't grow - she didn't.

I have ivar shelves in the Pantry, for the price of the side pieces i can barely get the pine to build them. Not to mention the 32mm rail and router guide i’d have to get to drill the holes. Although it could be a good excuse to do just that.

I'd be interested in how long it has taken you to build this. I think it is in general interesting how much time your projects need, especially compared to the video duration 🙂. But this one would be especially interesting, because everyone of us knows how long it takes to assemble ikea furniture.

One snippet from this video shows how well the track saw eats through fairly thick slices of ‘tree meat’. Better than I’d have thought.... was that your experience?

Thanks Frank! Yes, it’s pretty good at rip cuts, though the motor will bog down a little I’d you take it too fast. I have one saw with a 28t ‘universal’ blade in it and that helps. 👍👍

Since the original Bekvam is made of Birch it's already made of hardwood, you just made it of fancier hardwood ;) lol

With the amount of excess timber you had over could you make a second unit or more? As a batch would have reduced your cost in time spent!

No - I used pretty much all the Sapele I had on the framework and rails. I could manage another step in Oak, and two in idigbo, but that’s it. 🤷‍♂️

Dave, most of Pete’s work is in West London, I do the same sort of work in South London. We both make fitted furniture from mdf and birch ply but he can charge more because of his location. What he should of said was “the sort of people who can afford my prices”...

4:15 err... hang on what about... 4:29 ah, indeed. Very neat. That was bugging me right from the start. I've tended to domino square and end cut to angle afterwards. But I think your way is better.
