Stress relieving? Not content with leaving a his van, full of tools, doors wide open whilst he goes into the workshop and shuts the door last time, this time he's leaving camera equipment out it the street.

Peter, thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom with us. Also, thanks for not dragging us through sawing up everything in the video. What is important here is the idea and strategy you used to come up with this design, not having to watch you saw wood for 20 minutes. Perfect presentation. Please, keep these kinds of videos coming. You are a wealth of knowledge and experience that people new to woodworking, like me, need to see and experience. Stay safe, Regards.

Thank you! I think everyone has their own ideas of what they like to see in a video, and for some it's a step-by-step of each and every action; for others, like yourself, it's more about the why of what I'm doing. It's tricky to find the balance, sometimes, and good to hear I'm getting it mostly right - for now! 👍

I have got three kinds of sawhorses and "trussles". One kind built out 2x6's and 2x4's, can hold up a steel beam if need be and has done before. Second kind are store bought folding "Toughbuilt" brand, they are my go to now a days. Can hold up 500lbs each. Third kind is store bought plastic "trussles" quick to setup and use them for rolling out rolled aluminum flat stock. I think I have enough sawhorses for now.

I love the whole design and execution but what about folk who don’t necessarily have all the tools to make the joints. I use the plastic Stanley versions, which are crap. But they have one good feature which is two slots on the top for two lengths of 3*2, then there is a good support for 8*4 sheets.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
I understand where you’re coming from, but I used a £15 dowel jig to make these joints. Can’t really get much cheaper than that! 🤷‍♂️ And the beauty of these is that if you want eg cut-outs for a couple of lengths of 3x2 then you can add them in👍👍

A great video. I plan to make these trestles however the price of Birch ply is off the scale given most originates from Russia. Any cheaper and available alternative types of plywood you would recommend? Thanks

Thanks! Yes, that 'Baltic Birch' name is a real giveaway isn't it! I'll be looking at a few Birch ply alternatives in the New Year, but Maple faced hardwood ply is getting a lot of attention right now. 👍

I've learned a lot from watching many of your videos. Thank you for the excellent detailed explanations which has helped a novice like me with understanding how to go about things. This one however, made little sense. Detail was missing on how each piece was put together to achieve the end result, what tools were used to cut the piano hinge for example. What measurement for the leg pieces, where did you use the dowels to attach what to what? After learning so much from your previous video's, it is sad to now not be able to follow along.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rita, and thanks for your kind comments about previous videos; I’m sorry you felt you weren’t able to follow along with this one, but I do say clearly in the video that I draw the trestles up full-size on a pice of paper, and take the dimensions off the bench. Or you can of course make them to any size you choose. Ditto cutting the piano hinge - I show it being cut with a grinder, but it can easily be done with a hacksaw; if you don’t know that, all you have to do is ask - as a long-time viewer of my channel I’m sure you know that I respond to all questions and comments. There’s a couple of things going on here though; firstly, it sounds like you prefer the step-by-step videos where you see every cut, every joint, every detail, and I appreciate that perhaps as a relative newcomer, then that would be helpful. The sad fact is though, that those kind of videos just aren’t very popular, and as a full-time content creator, I want the videos to appeal to as many people as possible, to get as many views as possible. And the other consideration is simply one of business; you don’t give away what you’re trying to sell. Plans are available for both the bench, and these accompanying trestles on my Etsy, and there are also links in the description over there to a freely available step-by-step video that leads you through the process, for anyone who needs that kind of detail. Plans are also freely available to channel members here on KZbin, or to my Patreon supporters. Hope that helps. P

@@10MinuteWorkshop Hi Peter, Thank you for your reply. I am simply a single parent trying to learn some DIY to make ends meet at home. Just trying to cut a piece of wood straight was the first issue I came across. Then learning how and what tools etc were needed and how to attach a hinge on my broken door, odds that needed fixing around the house and hopes of making shelves myself to save and achieve something for myself, from watching your videos I have been able to do these odd jobs. I don't possess a grinder but did purchase a tracksaw after watching your series. Anyhow, Thank you for the detailed video's that did help me achieve all of the above.

Did you consider adding magnets for extra flopp-open-protection when closed?
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
No - the little pegs should be a pretty snug fit in the notches, so there’s little chance of them opening accidentally - though there’s nothing to stop you adding magnets if that’s something that might be an issue for you. 👍👍

@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
These are lightweight trestles - they're really not meant to bear much weight, just act as in/outfeed trestles for the bench if you're cutting sheets. I'm ~70Kg or so, and it's a definite no to my twin brother joining me - that isnt what these are for. 👍

Hi Graham. Mine's an older MFT/1080, but honestly, no, if for some reason I lost the one I have, I'd build my own from the benchdogs bits and pieces and come up with a hinged rail of some kind - as good as the alternatives are, there's nothing quite like being able to lift the rail out of the way lie that! 👍👍

Another really informative and interesting video Peter. You pick relevant and enjoyable topics thank you. Could you tell me about your TS55 blade choices like in this video. I’ve noticed in the past few videos whenever you are ripping wood you seem to use another white/green blade other than the 48 tooth one that comes standard with the TS55. Is that by choice to change blades when doing certain cuts? Which blades? (Did I miss a video where you explain?) Thank you
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks! I picked up a few alternative blades when I was trying different ones out for the tracksaw workshop series, and I needed a fresh one last year when I was cutting some veneered board, so I picked the Kay Blades and Fixings one; it performed well, and was a lot cheaper than the Festool original. The difference here though is much simpler than that; I was using two saws, one set to cut the 15* bevels, and one for the straight 90* cuts; the older bevel saw has an original Festool blade in it, but they were both 48t - no difference between them, really. I think I have about a dozen blades ready for sharpening, must get around to that soon! 😂👍

Thanks for another great video. I bought your bench plans last night, and eagerly await the coupon code to get the plans for the trestles. The dowel jig handy, I've got some cabinets to build for my new garage so that'll make things easier. One thing though, the link to it in the description appears to be dead, don't want you missing out on affiliate dosh 😉. Also one question, I often see you using the nail gun for jigs and laminating ply together, I don't suppose you've done, or could do, a video on nail guns. If not, what size nails do you use for tasks like this? Thanks
