In the previous videos, I cast my own custom dominoes out of aluminum. Since they turned out so nice, I spent a little extra time designing a special box for them. I'll show you many of the versions I came up with as well as 3D Print a pattern to cast the chassis of my domino box!
I hope it was worth the wait... :)

wow! the ca glue tip was just what I needed, having an awful time trying to sand 3d printed prts
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 жыл бұрын
+James Davis The bigger tip is to use files not paper for the majority of the work. PLA reaches its melting point pretty easily when sanding it. This makes for a doughy surface. The files act as a plane and cut rather than just an abrasive. Thick CA for filling, thin for leveling a surface. Be sure to have good ventilation!

Brian, you do amazing work! I love the choice of sodium silicate for this cast. While the surface quality of petrobond is hard to beat the near infinite number of shear planes makes molds featuring long/ thin facets like the corners of this box extremely hard to retain their form. Lovely cope and drag boxes as well! I have to ask though, where on earth did you get those crucible tongs?! I NEED a pair or three!

@3:10 I love this technique to fill in the print lines and texture... and it dries quickly too. I also use XTC-3D but it's very wasteful most of the time and I just use the super glue since I can smooth it with a popsicle stick

+Brian Oltrogge you will find it easier to coat things like the printed pattern if you use a qtip that you have fluffed up a bit (not to much or it will stick), we use CA all the time to coat things just careful of the fumes as its as bad as teargas

I skimmed through your replies quickly and did see this suggestion. Sorry if it's a duplicate. You could use ABS plastic and then use Acetone vapor to smooth the layer lines. The print will come out high gloss and glass smooth. Great videos by the way.!!

My 2 cents: To improve the surface finish you may wish to try having less hydrostatic pressure in the mold. ie- don't use a riser and sprue extender. The extra pressure tends to drive the metal into the mold material and leads to surface roughness. I don't think that casting needs the extra pressure. Observation - the petrobond had better surface finish - and it produced it at low hydrostatic pressure - ie: towards the top.
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Harris Interesting points, but the surface quality has more to do with the granularity of the sand not the pressure of the cast. The extended sprue and riser help to keep everything hot while the details are filled. The upper part of the sprue is actually less nice on most casts because that is where a lot of crap ends up. Petrobond : SS sand :: Plastilina clay : Play doh

Brian, excellent video as always. Just wondering, can you make your own petrobond using white play sand, a percentage of clay and motor oil? 3D printing for patterns really seems like the way forward, assuming you have or have access to a 3D printer. I was going to say that with the 3D printed pattern that I really didnt think it was necessary to sand down the pattern that much, however when you showed the difference between the waterglass sand and the petrobond areas of the casting sprue the finish level was chalk and cheese.
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Fryer Thanks! You can make your own Petrobond. You can buy the mix that you just add sand to. It is a but more complicated than the 3 ingredients you list. Also look for the recipe for k-bond as this might be something I try eventually... With 3D printed parts off of the printer, every step is essentially an undercut since it is a flattened round extrusion. One coat of CA pretty much fills these in.
