My uncle retired several years ago and bought a farm in an Amish community near Chambersburg, PA. He was a gruff, hard drinking, swearing (every other word), non-religious construction contractor from NYC. He was single but frequently brought in various women from the NY area for weekend trysts. So he was everything the Amish were not, but they embraced and accepted into their community. After a heart attack, they took care of him like he was family. They brought him breakfast, lunch and dinner, washed his clothes and cleaned his house, and everything required on a small farm, and did it all as if he were an Amish family member. Oh, and one other thing, these people were by average American standards quite affluent, even wealthy. They have my respect and admiration -the Amish I met were wonderful people in every respect.

I remember one time visiting a small town in Northern Ontario called Fenelon Falls a beautiful little place to live and raise a family in. Anyways seeing the Mennonites so far North and out of their environment it surprise me and it made me want to take a picture of them by the Falls but then I remember the golden rule about them not liking having their pictures taken of them by the tourists and so I just moved on. So, I live in one of the largest Amish settlements in the US. The Amish go to Pinecraft to get away from the Amish lifestyle. Pinecraft is nothing like what an Amish community is like. In Pinecraft all the typical Amish rules get thrown out. He would never get a random group of Amish men to speak on camera in a typical Amish community. That would be a major no no.

@@johnuferbach9166 he is actually spreading misinformation about this. They simply changed the rules from all shoplifting being a felony to anything above $950 as a felony. If you shoplift less than $950 it's a misdemeanor. You can serve up to 6 months in jail and up to $1000 in fines. It is NOT legal to shoplift in California. Workers are allowed to stop shoplifters though usually you are asked to report to asset protection because they are trained to handle shoplifters and depending on company policy you may be fired for not reporting to AP first. There was a rise in shoplifting once the rule was passed which could have been any number of factors especially misinformation from news headlines sensationalizing that "California has legalized shoplifting".

ストリフリーキエラン : This is a de facto way of legalizing shoplifting. By removing any consequences for shoplifting under a certain dollar amount, california has essentially legalized the activity. I know that "on paper" it is a misdemeanor, but let's be realistic and simply acknowledge that the police will not be responding to any calls for shoplifting, nor will the courts be enforcing these tickets. It is a free for all for the criminals and another nail in the coffin for small retail businesses. They have to deal with homeless tent cities on their sidewalks and shoplifters inside. But, let a law abiding citizen try to build a shed in their backyard and they have to go through a gauntlet of permitting processes and government inspections and fees. It's death by 1000 cuts for legitimate small business and tax paying citizens in commiefornia, hence the mass exodus over the last few years to Texas, Nevada, Idaho, Tennessee and Florida.

German HERUMSPRINGEN (dialect "rumspringe") literally means to JUMP AROUND - a pretty nice description of what youngsters in that age like to do :)
@kebman
@kebman 2 жыл бұрын
In Norwegian _Å springe_ means "to run." We often say, _Han sprang rundt på gårdene._ It literally means, "He ran around (and visited) on the farms (or houses)." So it means he liked to visit all the houses in town and shoot the shiet. ;) AFAIK from the particular Amish dialect, _schpringt_ means "ran." _Å springe rundt på gårdene_ was a pretty normal passtime for Norwegian rural dwellers when I grew up. Without Facebook that was how people got to know the local news. Of course Norwegians _aren't_ Amish, but we're still a North germanic people, with a language and customs very similar to the North German and Frisian ones. And while it seems most Amish have Swabian heritage, they also inherited a lot from those Northeren dialects of German.
