Two people came in to the jewelry repair shop, where I work, wanting to sell their jewelry because they needed money to pay their rent/mortgage. But we don't buy jewelry. It's the first time in three years that I've heard this. Plus, this time of year, for the last two years, has been very busy. But this year it has been very slow so far. I wouldn't wish crypto or the stock market on my worst enemy right now.

I wanted to report a first hand experience that I had today at one of the biggest malls in America. It's a Friday and the shopping mall was largely devoid of shoppers during the Christmas season. This mall had very few traffic, easy parking, and very few if any people holding shopping bags. The most crowded parts were at the food courts, of course people still have to eat even if they are not buying. The workers who make minimum wage, probably part-time, maybe even with a college degree, seem disinterested in basic exchange with the customers...probably seasonal hires. This mall had some high end shops as well as the low end shops, the outlets and the big department stores were largely empty of customers. Although maybe it's too early and many still shop online with plenty of shipping time left, and the malls pick up in traffic when it gets down to the last week. When talking to the workers, they said it has been slow even on Black Friday. This economy is really bad and the young Millennials favor the online shopping for the convenience. The malls have even tried to lure younger shoppers with Dave and Busters but young people today don't even need to feed quarters to play video games when it's on their phone already. What was surprising is the numerous 'help wanted' signs but if there is few traffic then where is the demand for employees coming from? I think it means that workers are just jumping from job to job until they can land something more stable, and it creates a permanent void for employers. There's so few people actually showing up to these malls, that there's little motivation to spend money once you're there, it's a death spiral that is painfully obvious. This is a big mall but it's demographic is largely unmarried tech workers here on a work visa who probably make 6 figures.

I'll do ya one better. Went to local Mall just to walk around and do a little "window shopping" the other day (admittedly not a weekend). Place was dead so much so, went to the seasonal Santa Claus set up and the guy was literally sleeping in the chair. Not a bad looking Santa btw. Anyways, couldn't believe my eyes as there wasn't a kid in sight...unless of course if you don't count the kid on his phone in the elf suit standing by the camera. Your post is on it, 'neo. There's more to this so called economy than meets the eye that's for sure. Just wait until we eventually get the 4th quarter revised numbers. Going to blow out equities in the wrong direction me thinks. Growth? LOL!

I read this tweet from Sven Henrich today, “A bull market fairy tale. Stocks rose for ten years on artificial stimulus. Then there was no more stimulus and stocks fell. The end.” I find it hilarious, but I think the story should have read “Chapter 2.” instead of “The end.” Please keep the podcasts coming Peter. Thanks for all of your commentary. Pearl Harbor Day and the American Heroes Channel was running I Almost Got Away with it reruns all night. WTF? I found that incredibly disrespectful. AngloGold was 9.78 when I bought leap calls at a 10$ strike 3 weeks ago. It closed at $11.34 yesterday. Thanks Peter! Hoping it goes back to $22 before too long. I'm starting to believe the run up to Octobers high was the melt up from February correction. The shills crying to buy the financials were eerily reminiscent of 2007 right before the crash. Where are they now? Probably laughing all the way to the bank.

The capital flight from the US should have been stopped a few decades ago and not now at once after there were no companies left to manufacture products in the US and there is no way to pay for imports except by a growing debt. The Chinese people hold huge amounts of dollars and if they decide to start selling Will cause enormous damage to the United States. The US must reduce government immediately and start thinking about increasing productivity rather than increasing debt. This is the way to deal with deficits rather than by imposing tariffs. US residents lived long free period, it is time to repay debts and start working ...

@Truth The average Chinese citizen works 18 hours a day at Apple's factory for $ 2 a day to send his iPhones to the US, Chinese citizens do not enjoy the fruits of their work at all - I'm talking about the government. I have no problem with the US I'm from Israel and we have an excellent relationship with them but their economy is going on like a zombie company that every month is raising loans to pay interest on previous loans and until there is a real change in spending will not be real solution. In the meantime, the dollar enjoys reserve currency status, but the currency of a country is supposed to reflect the strength of the economy and when nothing is produced, the currency is worth nothing. Until a few decades ago, the US products were sold all over the world and were considered the highest quality. Today the US no longer manufactures and takes loans to consume Instead of building factories and investing, the study shows that such an economy can not survive and certainly not be the dominant one in the world So maybe the Chinese will not sell dollars but the world may lose confidence in the dollar in an extreme case.To this day, Israel imports excellent agricultural products from the United States, but that's about the only thing I know that we import all the other products, either local or European, and from Asian specialties.

Many people diss Peter Schiff, mainly because he cannot predict the coming recession to the month. What these people do not take into account, is that even a ship holed below the waterline, can be kept afloat while the bilge pumps are working well enough. Bringing new pumps online while you fix the underlining issues, the leaks, are genuine stimulative investments. When the main players in the markets divert that stimulative investment to reserve their seat in bigger and more extravagant lifeboats, thats when the likes of Schiff, Maloney and others, by using their knowledge of previous mistakes and patterns start giving us the heads up.

What will ECB, BOJ, PBC do when they have a recession (=falling GDP)? Keynsian theory suggests 1. Lower interest rate 2 Increased public spending. But the rate today is either 0 kr negative and all countries already have large deficits and deficits will grow because of lower tax revenues and higher costs for unemployment. In that case deficits will explode.

Just wanted to point out, banks don't make money just from the "idiots" paying interest on their credit cards. They also make money on someone like Peter Schiff, who pays off his balance every month as well because banks also charge the merchant a percentage of each CC sale. Therefore they still make money from all the so called "freeloaders", that pay their balances off each month. Just not as much. "Freeloader" customers may be less profitable for them generally, but it's also likely true that CC customers paying their balances off each month, tend to have a much lower default rate than customers that carry balances.
@faithsrvtrip8768
@faithsrvtrip8768 6 жыл бұрын
I never pay interest. I hate it. So I am a freeloader, as you call it, who pays my balance in full. In fact one cc company increased my limit. I will not change my spending habits. But I understand how they trap people with no impulse control orb that don't practice good financial habits, like saving and living within one's means.

Peter, why is Venezuela's economy in shambles when they've been running trade 'surpluses' for over 22 straight years (1990-2012)? Probably was longer than that, but the article only went to 2012. Why isn't their economy going gangbusters with all those trade surpluses? How are great economists like Sowell and Walter Williams getting it wrong?

www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=31857185 here's a graph that show's the 22 years i'm talking about. www.focus-economics.com/country-indicator/venezuela/trade-balance and here's the website that the above graph was taken from. tradingeconomics.com/venezuela/balance-of-trade here's a quarterly graph that when taken yearly, again shows trade surpluses EVERY SINGLE YEAR from 2013 to the third quarter of 2015 That's 24.75 years of straight unbroken trade surpluses in Venezuela! How does that happen Peter? Why is Venezuela's economy in such bad shape with all those trade surpluses? Could it be that Sowell, Walter Williams, Robert McGee and so many others are correct when they say that trade 'surpluses' are a TOTAL non-issue. Are they also correct when they say that trade deficits are more often an indicator of a strong economy, rather than a weak one?

@@markusEuro Give it a few years. If you want a real look at the state of our economy from a debt/credit perspective, take a look at the ratio of nonperforming loans to total loans. Link below. fred.stlouisfed.org/series/NPTLTL In the past three cycles, when the rate of nonperforming loans rise 25 basis points off the low, a recession soon followed. It hasn't happened yet this cycle. Schiff's theory is right, he just doesn't know the timing so he sets himself on auto-repeat every podcast to prop up gold. Gold will rise in the end -- but it's better to get in now before the end comes.

Peter, Peter, Peter, most of the stocks in the market were at their upper range, meaning most securities were at full value or near full value. Big money is simply bringing securities back towards the lower end range. They will accumulate stocks as they go down and they will distribute the securities to retail and repeat the process over and over. The financial crisis was bad but we recovered like usual because we live in a scripted reality. You sure have alot of power over the people with poor brain development

I don't know about you but as the fed raises rates. Investors and the markets are freaking out. It doesn't get any clearer than that. Not to mention tariff conflicts, other influencing factors. If fed continues to raise rates, we will see some crazy things happening. How in the world can USA be prospering with over 21Trillion in debt. That's like a middle class family being 21Million in debt with a 100k income that is not prospering it's keeping up with the Joanses. IT MAKES NO SENSE; USA is not prospering in a healthy way. It's artificially deep fried and wrapped up in lies. The only people who are prospering are those that can take advantage of the circumstances. But there is no way this will end well for USA. How sad.
