An idea so obvious and simple that my video is 4 minutes long. How awesome would it be if brass companies offered us new brass that we could resize to our specs the first time? I would love to have "long" brass available in every cartridge that maybe needed the shoulder bumped a little bit to fit my exact specs. Johnny when is the 6 ARC coming back? You left me hanging with heavy bullet load development. I am currently trying Accurate 2520 after LVR and CFE223. Velocities were good with CFE but accuracy and SD were lackluster using the 105 Hornady HPBT. LVR seams to be my front runner, but it suffers from temp sensitivity. From testing at 50F-20F I lost over 50 fps.

Thank you for this video. My go to brass for .300 Win Mag has been Nosler. The accuracy I've gotten with Nosler has been outstanding, but it's expensive and I'm lucky if I get 3-4 firings out of each lot. Last year, I bought a new box of Nosler brass for a Moose hunt and had some problems that motivated me to call Nosler for the first time: many case necks were dented, a piece of brass was missing and I noticed the headspace for the new brass was approximately .020" smaller than the 2.276" fired headspace I get with my Bartlein barrel. The Nosler representative I spoke with didn't seem to understand headspace or appreciate my recommendation that they look at why the headspace on their new .300 Win Mag cases is so short. I told them I suspected much of their case life is lost with the initial firing, but the rep either didn't understand or care about my desire for longer case life. Now you have given me another option to look at and it just so happens that I need to replace a lot of Nosler brass. Thanks man!

@@RetrieverTrainingAlone Case head line formation visible on the outside of the case and felt with a bent paper clip on the inside. Also, primer pockets are much looser and barely pass test with Ballistic Tools Swage Gauge.

@@njgrplr2007 Thanks. I live in interior Alaska and hand load for moose. Have not had that problem with 300 H & H Magnum and Federal or Norma cases. I do not load super hot, usually around 2880 fps for 180gr Barnes TTX or Nozler E-Tips. I do anneal and 0.002 shoulder bump and have cases that I've reloaded 11 times since the 1990s. Nozler does not make cases for the 300 H & H, so no experience there...I do have some Nozler .270 Win cases but only fired once so far.

I have 100 of these long version 300 WM and let me tell you, it on the first firing, reduced my ES to 9 fps and the SD to 4.6 fps without out even playing with the charge weight. I did have to reduce the charges by .3 grains to maintain the same velocities, but never really experimented with any other charges.

Thanks for that video. I have a 7MM Rem Mag. New Norma, Remington and Winchester brass has to blow out .011" or so to fill the chamber. Big props to Peterson for doing this...

20 years ago I had such problems with case head separation in my Remington 700 BDL 300 Win Magnum after 4 to 5 firings that I started neck sizing it in my 300 WM reloads which solved the problem. I only hunt with new virgin brass to get factory like bolt closing during cold weather. I've shot my 300 enough that I am on my second barrel so some of my brass has a lot of reloading cycles. Your video gives new insight into why case head separation problems exist in reloading these belted cases. Thanks--- Captain Ed

Thank you for sharing this awesome informational video! I love Peterson Brass so much I bought 500 pieces of 308 Winchester or my competition AR10 and another 100 for my 338LM ultra long range rifle. And like your 300WM brass there was minimal fire forming needed. On another note.... I searched for an entire year for an optic for the 338LM and about two years ago I purchased the Valdada Recon G2, 4.8-30×56mm. I have to say that it is an amazing optic. I feel that for the money, the 40mm main tube, and the unprecedented 150moa of vertical adjustment in the erector, it is the best I could have gotten for under 3k. Ths Schott glass is in my opinion the best I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot while researching.

I fireform new 7mag brass by seating a bullet to jam. This gives me the initial strength in the shoulder area instead of head area. Hopefully peterson will come out with 7mag brass soon.

My Begara B-14 fired cases measure 2.277", I size them with a RCBS FL die and a 0.006 Plus shell holder from Redding (set of 5 for $50). This brass is fantastic as I wouldn't have to fire form prior to loading my good rounds (which takes a long time and costs a lot and primers are hard to find and $$$). It reduces case stretch.

That’s cheap a friend of mine paid over three hundred dollars for a set of Redding 300 PRC dies , I bought a set of Redding dies for my 300 win/mag that was $150.00 because they are worth the cost and had to buy a VLD seating stem for another $40.00 it’s the cost of precision reloading

What a great video. Thank you. My experience is with the 338 Winchester Magnum and I found close to .025" of an inch between the shoulder on new brass and how far the shoulder would move after firing. I found this class of brass (it's a family of cartridges with the same parent brass) to be massively over designed and hardly effected by anything.... except the first firing. That is if the reloader only resizes to get a snug fit with the shoulder. But a full length resize just destroys the cases in a few loads. So thank you for bringing this to our attention. It is long overdue and should make a truly great case even greater.

@@RetrieverTrainingAlone Actually, a full length resize that only sets the shoulder back .002" is ideal. My experience was the shoulder on brand new brass had it shoulders set back by .025" while causes a great deal of case stretch on the first firing. Full length resizing after that is almost as bad and doing the a few times will cause to brass to stretch to the point of head separation since most of the stretching occurs just ahead of the belt. The belt on the 300 mag case (headspacing on the belt) is there only because that's what magnum cartridges have (marketing tool) though belts have not been needed on most bottleneck cartridges since the early days of the 20th century.

@@williammcconnell9501 0.025" is a big stretch....I measured factory loaded Nozler brass and fired case using a headspace comparator and it was 0.010" in my 300 H & H . Your right, the first firing is the largest stretch in the lifetime of a case, with resizing 0.002" shoulder bump, I usually get at least 10 reloadings in my 300 H & H.

Belted Magnums, 300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, and 350 Rem Mag in particular seem to have very inconsistent base to shoulder reference dimensions among individual firearms. That’s part of why sizing to space off the belt eats your brass. The long brass is indeed an excellent idea - it provides sufficient length to not have excessive case stretch on the first firing. I’ve done the same thing by forming long 350 Rem Mag from 7mm Rem Mag and neck reaming.

The only cartridge that actually is supposed to headspace on the belt is the 300 H&H magnum. The belt is a selling gimmick from the 70s. All rimless cartridges besides that headspace on the shoulder. You will notice that most modern high performance cartridges developed by non big box companies no longer use a belt. Speer loading manual #10.

Johnny....that comment about the brass being shot as "The way it's supposed to be" is incorrect. What is happening in a factory chamber is the result of economics and manufacturing. The rifle makers discovered that they could order belted mag cartridge reamers with a longer base to shoulder datum measurement while chambering to headspace of the belt. This allowed the reamer to chamber MANY more rifles before needing to be scrapped. This is why buying a factory barreled belted mag is a recipe for case head separation. I chamber many belted mags with a SAAMMI spec reamer and use the headspace gauge on the belt as a guide to ensure the brass will fit. With this I NEVER have over .001 -.002 case growth base to headspace datum on any of my rifles. This is why the non-belted mags are such a boon for consistency and brass life. Removing the belt is the best thing ever when designing a cartridge.

My 300 win mag Norma virgin brass measures 2.260. Fired in my chamber it measures 2.2795. That's .0195 shoulder blow out. Good thing it only happens once. I only bring it back .002 after that.

Hey there, when the primers are really tight, just put a little desk lamp to warm up the brass a while before you start. Maybe a real lite dusting of graphite just over the brass. Never tried that but heard it somewhere Let know if this helps.

So just so I am clear, this long brass is only really a benefit if you then set your sizing die to just bump the shoulder right? Wouldn’t a standard SAAMI die with a factory setup just resize this brass back to the ~.0018 back and cause a possible neck length problem? If I am understanding right these are a great idea, but only if you understand headspace and don’t over-resize them.

when you rebarrel a rifle if you headspace tight on the go then your standard brass won't be short, which when I rebarrel I run tight on the go, I don't even use a nogo because I'm where I want to be, Peterson just made the brass longer because of factory long chambers bla bla bla, if I rebarreled and was going to shoot peterson brass i would just use the brass as my go gauge and be tight on it, then have minimum sizing which will make the brass last longer which mine does unless you run it hot

I have been using the Norma brass for the 300 WSM. I don’t know if you are interested in factory ammunition, but I have been buying the Norma factory ammunition and once you shoot it, you have fire formed brass for your chamber. It’s really good brass, on par with Lapua, Peterson, and other top brands. I bought 5 boxes earlier this year loaded with 150 grain Nosler BT. I just ordered 5 more boxes this evening loaded with the 180 Oryx bullets for $143.00 including shipping, pretty cheap for loaded ammunition and good brass. Because 300 WinMag is a belted cartridge and if you’re using it in the same bolt action rifle would you be better off not sizing the whole case so that it does not stress the brass ? I think that any magnum cartridge may lose structure integrity buy full length resizing especially the non-belted 300 Remington ultra mag what is your thought on that?
