Mark, Thanks for the review! We're happy to report that the latest run of StroboStomp HD will ship with an 'O' shaped rubber pad on the bottom, showing through to the serial number label which is adhered to the metal housing. The tuner will also ship with an adhesive-backed velcro replacement pad of the same shape, allowing the user to swap the bottom rubber for an exact-fit velcro piece.

@@zerofret4207 lol. As low as you will ever tune on a bass. Peterson tuners aren't just for instrumental tuning. They are for measuring pitch at pretty much any register. So a fairly middle of the range register on a bass guitar is not much of a problem.

I have owned a lot of Tuners, but this is amazing and will be my last one to buy. If you are contemplating on purchasing one, I would encourage you to do so, you will never look back or be disappointed.

My tuner of choice has been the Sonic Research Turbo Tuner ST-300. I found it a bit quicker than the Peterson StroboStomp HD and I prefer its matte screen as well as its smaller footprint. About the tuning accuracy, which is the most important feature, I found them both equally the best on the market. It's so accurate that I also use it to adjust the intonation of my bass. The only missing feature on the ST-300 would be a good buffer option embeded. For now it's true bypass only but... I have an active bass so it's not even an issue for me.

Agree, Turbo Tuner, I think is the fastest and probably most accurate "consumer" grade tuner going. Not as sexy as the Peterson but maybe a little better. Sonic Research's marketing is hilariously terribly though, which is why I think you don't see them around much.
@Steelplayer59
@Steelplayer59 Жыл бұрын
As a fellow bass player and Strobostomp HD owner, I agree with you on all points. I also play pedal steel guitar, and this is where the sweetened tunings really shine. Much like a piano, the steel requires being slightly detuned to sound in-tune (of course, there’s much debate on that subject). The Strobostomp HD allows so much user configuration that it should quell most arguments on the subject, as it pretty much allows you to create anything you desire. I added an inexpensive cellular phone screen protector to mine (a plastic one cut to size, not the glass ones commonly available now). We will see if it helps. One advantage pedal pedal steel players have is that we can clamp the tuner to the guitar leg, well up off the floor. Thanks for the great review.

I just picked one up today. I peeled the rubber pad off and used some tar remover I use for my car to easily clean all the sticky of the bottom. Leaving a nice metal finish ready for velcro or dual lock tape. Also as they stated above the sticker with serial number is now seperate to the rubber pad so no issues there.

I find when using a strobe tuner live i'm constantly 'chasing' my tuning. It's so accurate that when i look down at it and see it moving I feel like i need to tune... even if i'm only a tiny bit out. I will spend all gig tuning. But..for setting up my bass i love the accuracy.

I mostly use a headstock clip-on tuner. It worked great on my 4 string (Sire V7). I recently bought a Sire M7... and the clip-on doesn't work as well. It frequently picks up the "3rd" instead of the root. With the 5 pegs on the headstock... there are less places for me to move the clip-on. I also have a Zoom B3 stomp pedal... it has tuning. I like it... except I don't often have that when gigging.

I play a Fender P-bass American Standard and I use the Polytune2. I have tried clip ons but when jamming with others in my home studio and the guitarist starts strumming chords or the drummer is whacking away the clip on can sometimes be influenced by the other vibrations and lose their way. When I first started playing 6 string acoustic I used the Boss TU-80. It has a microphone which is good if your acoustic does not have a pickup. The Boss can be used with a Bass since it has 1/4 inch in and out. but it is more awkward to use when jamming because it isn't a stomp type tuner. I think I paid about $90 or something for the Polytune a few years ago. I don't gig so I can't talk about its durability. I use a wal-wart to power it. I use it 3 - 4 times a week every week and have had no problems.

i personally use a small clip on tuner, super easy to use, just clip it on strum, tune and done, super light weight so when i am on the go just toss it in my bag and forget it is even there untill i need it, works great on my acoustic bass as well, and when my guitarist needs a tune and forgot his tuner (happens way too often) just toss it over and off he goes, also relatively cheap to replace if you lose it or if it breaks, had mine for 5 years and it is still going strong (just has a few scratches and dings on it) it is not the most absolute in terms of precission, but it is good enough for some trashy punk.

NEVER understood why some insist on tuning the lightest string first. i started out with a cheap acoustic guitar-shaped object that had no internal bracing or truss. teacher said to tune the light string first so i did and i had to retune about a dozen times before the lighter strings would hold their tune. it tuned better if i tuned the low e first and worked up. even then i had to retune a couple times to get it to hold a tune but that was fault of the guitar. but what was happening was the heavy tension of the low e was pulling the neck and the lighter high e would go flat. flat. ever since i've tuned from heavy to light.

@@keithclark486 yes to lube. yes to stretching and retuning. but i'm still gonna start with the thickest string though since that actually has the most tension. it's how i do it with the strobostomp for both intonation and tuning. it's also how you tune by ear to itself, since E5=Aopen etc.

@talkingbasslessons
@talkingbasslessons 4 жыл бұрын
The human ear finds slight pitch deviation hard to hear (single pitch movement) but the ear is more than capable of hearing the difference when played alongside another reference tone. Basically you can hear (or more accurately 'feel') the difference between two notes a few cents apart. You can prove this by using the Peterson to monitor the tuning as you shift over a reference tone (preferably a basic sine wave from a tone generator). You might not hear the tiny shift of pitch when play solo away from the tone but you will hear the feint modulation in the difference tone when played together. Now, do we need that amount of accuracy for tuning a clumsy old instrument like a bass guitar? Probably not. But if I'm setting my intonation it is good to have as much accuracy as possible. It's also worth remembering, Peterson tuners aren't 'bass tuners' They're for tuning 'anything'. If you want the best in the business, this is it. If not, then there are plenty of other tuners. Different strokes for different folks.

So coincidental, I just bought that one (after my boss TU-15 just crapped out after 25 years)… this Peterson thing is so ridiculously accurate that it will drive you crazy trying to get everything caged…. caught myself taking one hour to do intonation-{on 4 fkn strings.! 🙃} ..thinking that my bass couldn’t Intonate,… wound up saying uncle, plugged the bass in, and the damn thing never sounded more tempered!… this tuner is ridiculous… and I haven’t even messed with the ‘sweetener’ setting yet

What do you do, when you've just applied body lotion minutes before practice? Now my hands are greasy 😑

I always wash my hands before I pick up the bass. No lotion until I'm done playing. It also reduces the wiping down of the strings after I'm done.

nope, its turbo tuner by a mile, no bypass delay, like peterson , and much faster than the peterson tuners, short of the real peterson analog strobes. and I own both. and a few others.

As you probably know, I use the Turbo Tuner on one pedalboard and the Peterson on my other. I've also got the majority of tuners on the market today (I know I've been talking about the shootout forever but it's coming soon). The turbo tuner is fantastic and I do prefer the more rugged feel. However, for studio use I much prefer the Peterson simply because of the display which is light years ahead of the turbo tuner. Would I take the Peterson on tour? Probably not. I'd be worried about it smashing. For live work I'd go for the Turbo Tuner - probably. To be honest, live work doesn't really demand much in terms of high quality and accuracy so I might not even recommend the turbo tuner. The Korg and Boss tuners are OK enough for that. Depends on how much you want to spend on it. Both the Turbo Tuner and the Peterson are luxury items for the average muso. Paying over 100 dollars for any kind of tuner will seem ridiculous to 99% of bass players. And they're right. Especially for gigs.

I've used the Pitch Black and Advance up to this point as my main tuner.

I have a Peterson Stomp classic that works awesome, an original polytune that is beat up but still tunes. Years ago I made the mistake of buying 2 of the first korg pitch black pedal tuners, wtf! Total pieces of sh€t that went in the trash after they stopped working. Never again, spend the money and get a good tuner, clips on tuners are not to be taken serious either...

I don't really see a need to buy an expensive tuner pedal when I can just use a clip on

That's right most of the time for general tuning when you don't mind getting it in the rough ballpark. This is for more accurate tuning.

For a while I thought my ddario clip on was fine and my ears could fix what the tuner couldn't do...but it was off. Its not about accuracy in terms of getting tuned. Its abiut getting properly tuned. The shitty ones are off greatly...and you can intonate with them. Which saves literal money.

Free stuff review is obvious. what is the point of being precise if you "just gotta get it as close as you can" $140 for tuner with a ton of nonsense you dont need and some you cant even use, or $11 for a snark that does the same thing. hmmmm. I guess if they gave it to me for free I would give it a greatest in the world label to. Except that is the kind of thing that cause you to lose credibility from people who value your lessons.
