It's people like that who keep hobbies alive. When you see someone showing interest in something you care about, rather than scold them for doing it wrong, it's much more rewarding for all parties to encourage them. Besides sometimes the "wrong" way ends up being better.

Oh this was absolutely awesome! Made my day! As a model railroader, this is just cool to see different ideas on how to make something work. I think the biggest difference in operational reliability is in a steam locomotive, you have all of that weight acting as a flywheel to smooth out the piston travel, where as the power of the saw far exceeds the weight of the apparatus acting as a flywheel when compared to their 12 inch to 1 foot scale counterpart. I think if you could build one with a lot wider gauge, a ton more heavier, and had the saw directly driving the wheels on the track, (called drive wheels on the 1:1), you could achieve better results and have a lot more smoother operation. Also could make a double saw version and have each saw power one side of wheels, and have at least 3 drive wheels per side. Would definitely help with traction and stability. But was definitely a cool video! Love it!!!

You would never know it by most accounts today, but stores like that were actually the norm when I was a child, not that long ago, I'm only 44. Most places nowadays are run by people who couldn't extract a needle from their caboose if they had a tractor, a tank, AND a full-size locomotive! Entertrainment Junction is Gigachad-level cool! Plus other stores would have displays set up and taken down for the holiday shopping season. The rest of the year larger toys would be set on display where kids could play with them or get up close views of what they looked liked. Now stores barely bother with display models, as every unit is only for sale, with anything lowering that price to be avoided.

“G scale” actually refers to multiple different scales, as modeling standards and prototypes can vary from modeler to modeler. What you’re building on is G _gauge,_ with “gauge” referring to the space between the rails. G gauge is always 45 mm (~1 3/4 inches), regardless of scale.

I’d love to see an RC steam train that uses actual water. Like, you have a controller for operating the different functions like the throttle and the brake, as well as adding to the “fire” ( for safety it wouldn’t be an actual flame, but rather a heating element ). I think that would be cool. An RC train that operates like a full size one. 😊

Some goofy fun hack craziness for sure! For smoother, more predictable operation you really need TWO sawzalls with the second on a crank 90 degrees out of phase with the first. Look at the OTHER side of the steam locomotive(s) and you'll see the cranks and rods are "quartered" relative to each other. So one is always pushing or pulling while the other goes over dead center. And BTW EnterTrainment junction has an outdoor ride-on train too. That size would be a great fit for a dual sawzall loco to actually ride and pull their train. Hope to see such a sequel!!

They make an articulating Sawzall. That would probably be more suitable for this application. It travels in an arc motion ensteaf of just single plane back and forth. Although the steam pistons only went back and forth they used a knee joint to keep from being stuck in the 180 position. If the video is made by Peter S..I will always watch and enjoy. 💎when you said that the train needed some more weight to be added to pull the heavy load, you were partially right. The thing you really want is more weight on the DRIVING WHEELS (the wheels that are actually powered). Most of your weight is on that front bogey that isn’t powered, so a lot of potential reactive effort is being wasted. For a potential V2, I’d suggest putting most of the weight on the driving wheels and adding more driving axles (you can simply do this by connecting more wheels through side rods, which is what steam locomotives do) for more tractive effort💎

I like how the battery is just dangling off the side, and random stuff duct taped to it for balance. brilliant!

Excellent video! Could we have an impact wrench/driver powered car next? Having to deal with the intermittent blows for power delivery would be quite interesting!

Them: buying straight train tracks using them for testing: Also them: @9:47 slowly but surely creating a small curve with them 😂 Also very nice video and nice model. Very nice move of Entertrainment Junction to let it run on their tracks. 👍🏻

It's Thomas' deranged cousin: Dirk the Derp engine. This is amazing. Good work on figuring out that the blade of the sawz-all is rocking back and forth.

My daughter lives in Troy, OH. I'm going to let her know about EnterTrainment Junction. My grandkids would love that and she's only about an hour away. By the way, I'm going to come visit you next time I'm up there. ;-)

It was hilarious to see that thing running on a proper G scale layout, you should do one for OO or O gauge powered by a Dremmel
