Nice vehicle, nice video.
@rainerzuehlke5015 жыл бұрын
Very nice video and an impressive expedition vehicle. Just a kind note: circumventing snow fields, i.e., taking a bypass around them, bears heavy fines in Iceland. Basically you have to stick exactly to the marked track - even if it's covered by a snow field, even if you run the risk of getting your vehicle stuck. This may sound unreasonable. The rationale is not to damage the sparse vegetation (grass, moss) which takes several decades to recover in Iceland's subarctic climate. Fines of 1000-4000 USD for violations have been reported in media in Iceland (plus the cost for repairing the damage). Rangers, wardens and possibly also by-passers will report you to the police or the next local authorities. A photograph (or, ahem, a movie ...) which allows identification is regarded as sufficient proof. With an ultra-heavy vehicle you will probably find yourself at the upper end of fines. Off-roading is a criminal defence in Iceland. Please be assured that I don't want to be negative or spoil anybody's fun driving on F-Roads in Iceland. However, I assume you prefer to be aware of the relevant regulations in order to avoid truly expensive fines.

No wonder there is so little tourism there.
@andrifsig4 жыл бұрын
@@badgerpa9 hoping this is sarcasm...the state of tourism until covid19 broke was one of our main source of income. Protecting our fragile nature is a part of keeping the tourism industry alive for years to come. The tire tracks that these trucks leave behind not only are an eyesore in nature, but can also cause damage to the surrounding vegetation. It uproots vegetation and dries out the soil and turns it into dry dust. Heavy winds, which are quite common here in Iceland, cause that dust to almost sandblast the surrounding area and infrastructure along the way. Which then causes more damage. Think of it as a hot knife through butter, then let water flow through the rift the knife made to make it bigger, then dry out the butter until it turns into dust, then position a fan on the dry butter and turn it on the maximum. See how much is left and how much the butter is scattered all over, all spots of dry butter represent some damage to the neighbouring environment. This is why we ban offroad driving. Except in winter when the ground is frozen and covered in snow. Then we bring out the so called super jeeps and drive on glaciers and in the highlands on snow covered and frozen ground.
@tomwebb30814 жыл бұрын
I'm glad I wasn't mis-remembering this - when I visited Iceland in 2017 it was made *very* clear that off-roading, anywhere, was prohibited - and it's entirely reasonable as to why. Iceland is a beautiful country and it needs everyone to work to keep it so.

that truck is way too big for the F-roads here in Iceland. Way too heavy for the road to handle and also when you have to divert from the road, which is illegal, because of snow, then you brought the wrong vehicle. These trucks are nowhere near being perfect for this terrain. In reality, they are really much more damaging to the tracks and its surrounding than a 4x4 modified overlander would.

On the 5th minute illegal off-roading. Vehicles driving off-track is a big issue in Iceland seriously threatening our enviroment. If the driver couldn't make it over the snow-bank on the track then he should have turned back. It is 100% illegal to create new tracks. The "new" tracks made by the heavy vehicle are probably still visible now three years later.

Your truck is more than capable enough to handle that snow. The driver does not have enough experience though. Take a class and learn. If you let more air out 9f your tires, and lock the axle lockers and then go a little bit faster you would have come through. But, your staying a while in Iceland? Take a class from a pro. You will learn a lot. Can be the difference between life and death on a journey like yours.
@thl76525 жыл бұрын
If you’re by yourself it’s foolish to try blasting through obstacles without another vehicle to aid in recovery. The first snow patch was fine to experiment with but no way were they going to make it through the large second patch. It was wet snow with no solid ground underneath.
@badgerpa94 жыл бұрын
The snow was up to the axle letting air out would only lower the axle and since it is rock under the snow it is better to dig to the rock.

I think you would have a lot better luck in the snow if you lower the air pressure in the tires. Bigger footprint causes it to stay on top and not dig in so easy. Also in snow momentum is your friend. Keep up a good head of steam and go easy on the throttle. Also, if you intend to travel these remote areas, snow chains might be a good investment. Probably cost a small fortune to get a tow truck capable of pulling that much weight out to rescue you.

the same goes for here in Iceland. He just got away with it. The only time you can go truly offroad here in Iceland is when the ground is frozen and snowcovered. They chose to damage the environment because they could not navigate through a simple obstacle or turn back. Most F-roads in Iceland are nowhere near being able to support this kind of vehicle and it will do damage to the road itself when they are driving on it, not to mention the soil outside of the trail.
