In this video I demonstrate how to cook the best mince and tatties.
Mince and tatties is an iconic Scottish dish of lean minced beef stewed with onions and carrots. Not only is it a great winter warmer, it is the epitome of Scottish comfort food 😋

My Grandmother, God bless her soul, use to make mince and tatties for me when I was a young lad. I couldn't quite remember how she did it. I was close, but your recipe helped me get over the top and make it just right. Now I've made this for my children and they just love it. Thank you!

Looks good for an appetizer but as my old Grand Dad used to say when out visiting of a weekend "Tat was affa fine but when does the real meal begin?" He was a big man and loved his grub, especially at the weekends when he wasn't driving his lorry from Aberdeen to Glasgow Fish market, circa 1930's. Me instead of cornflower and water slurry I add 2 spoonful's of Rough Oatmeal to dry up the Minced beef and Veggies but then that was how I was brought up to appreciate good food.

Great video Pete, looks absolutely delicious. I see your a man after my own heart, saving the beef dripping from the roast. I had Sunday roast today with a few friends in the village, I roast the rib of beef, Yorkshire puddings and gravy, they cooked the vegetables. Swede is something I've had a problem buying for years here in Spain, when I had the shop I had to import them from the UK for my Cornish Pasties. However they do seem to be more available recently, so Mince & Tatties it is one night this coming week as the nights are getting cooler here. Thanks a lot.

Thanks Mr Paul! I always save my beef dripping, it adds superb flavour and a little goes a long way. I like it with swede but I have been known to add other veggies from time to time. There are no real hard and fast rules beyond meat, onions and potatoes. Enjoy your mince and tatties dinner! 😋

I could taste through your tasting at the end. I am actually cooking this right now, BUT because I am short on time I will be using my pressure cooker. I have tried some of your recipes and have been delighted with them. I am an OAP in Australia and I love your straightforward recipes. I can also make more in less time and freeze some dinners for later. I do love the dishes that I grew up with and I can remember Mum making things like these in her pressure cooker with dumplings. Also, I do save the drippings and I love them on a bit of toast. PS Ex Brit

Thank you for sharing this recipe. I have lived in Scotland for the last 28 years but I am a vegan and so never had it. I might try a vegan version one day. But an elderly friend, in her 90’s, has recently had some health issues and she is no longer mobile and the caters who come in will only use the microwave for her meals. She has been craving mince and tattles and has said the ping meal versions are awful and she would almost rather have the cardboard box it comes in lol. So I am going to attempt to make it for her as a surprise. Is this able to be frozen, do you know? As I would like to make several “freezer meals” of this so that the care givers can microwave it and yet she still gets tasty home cooked food. I am trying to find the traditional Scottish recipes to,make for her. Although I am quite impressed, she does love a curry, I,was shocked lol. Thanks again for sharing this!

Yes Shelley it's a great batch cooking recipe that you can freeze in portions. I normally re-use takeaway containers. I have a whole playlist of curries: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHW2ZGWmgaZ-jKs

Gravy browning rather than granules would be better to give colour.

Gravy granules give colour, texture and seasoning Carol. It's your mince so cook it your way, nothing is written in stone here.

@@LazyCookPete Yes you’re right Pete each to their own, I just don’t like the fake gravy taste of granules. You did everything right for flavour and it looked amazing but just needed a touch of gravy browning, then in my opinion spoiled it with the granules.
