Scottish stovies is a superb one pot budget meal that is very easy to make. You can use any leftover meat or mince with onions and potatoes, then you can add any vegetables you have available and a few flavourings to turn it into a delicious and satisfying comfort food meal. Stovies is a real winter warmer! 😋
Big thanks to my friend Darren from Livingstone for introducing me to this great Scottish comfort food.

There is a similar Welsh dish called Lobscouse that just gets added to every day, traditionally it would run for a few days before they made another: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4S6qqZna9WNb9k I think all these type of dishes owe at least some of their heritage to Nordic/Viking traditions where salt fish was used instead of meat.

I prefer my Stovies to be on the dry side as is the conception up here in the N. East of Scotland and added to it when it is plated up, 2 pieces of Oatcakes and a glass of warmed milk to wash it down with. What you made is a variation of Stovie Broth, which I'd class as a soup but grand for keeping the belly warm on a cold frosty night. Cheers Pete.

I learned it from a friend who came from Livingstone Atholl, and I have made it this way ever since. It certainly fills me up and keeps my belly warm. Scots have got comfort food wrapped up and tied with a gold ribbon 😋

Looks good, for anyone who prefers the thicker version you can follow this recipe up until you add the 400ml of stock - then do NOT top up with water. Instead you bring to the boil, lower heat to low and simmer for 50 minutes with the lid on stirring occasionally to prevent anything burning/sicking. Let it rest for 15 minutes after cooking time, stir to your preferred thickness and serve

Looks great! Traditional stovies was generally made on a Monday and was to use up anything left from the Sunday meal. Normally that would have been roast beef or mutton, plus any left over potatoes and vegetables. Nowadays, most people make stovies from fresh rather than to use up scraps. You are correct when you say there is no ‘correct’ recipe for stovies due to leftovers being an unpredictable thing. I can testify though, that stovies made from roast beef, veg and lots of fried onions with of course potatoes (they were probably cheap) as a filler. Still to this day, one of my absolute favourite meals.

I'm Scottish but Mum's English, so I missed a lot of trad Scots stuff growing up in the 80s. It's not a million miles from Scouse I suppose. My mother in-law does it but hers is a lot drier- can't say I'm a huge fan to be honest. Yours looks pretty inviting though! Good call on the spring onions 🙂

It has a lot of similarities with scouse and with Welsh cawl and lobscouse, all of which have a similar ancestry I imagine. This one was delicious 😋

Awww I can smell it from here! Looks delicious. Reminds me of my Irish stew. 10 out of 10 for flavour, 10 out of 10 for adding WHITE pepper, and definitely 10 out of 10 for a bowl and a spoon. Yum!
@LazyCookPete
@LazyCookPete Жыл бұрын
It is closely related to Irish stew, scouse, Welsh lobscouse and Welsh cawl. Like you I love my stews served in a bowl with a spoon to scoop it up. White pepper is the traditional spice because black pepper really didn't find common use in these islands until the eighties. I love black pepper but this is a dish for the white stuff 😋
