I think you're doing even better with these engine building videos as they go along. Less use of wrong words and fumbling with words. Much easier to follow because of it. Love how you go through the installation process too. All of the little hints and tricks are extremely helpful. Thanks again for doing these!

Pete, You are a truly amazing guy!! I can't imagine a better communicator and teacher. I have watched your engine building videos from start to finish and I believe that I have learned an incredible amount about assembling an engine. Even more than that I have come to appreciate the importance of care and patience in this process as well as in all things involved in and around engines. It is a great treat to be exposed to an expert who has the common man touch. You are to be congratulated for your wonderful contribution. Thank you.

Hey Pete, wanted to say thanks for putting together this series. You've done a great job walking all of us through these steps, and you're a heck of a teacher! I recently entered the classic muscle market by purchasing a '70 Charger R/T 440 Magnum with 19k all original miles. It's needed a valve job after sitting for so long, and before your videos I didn't know up from down when it came to engines. I think what you've shown us is the most detailed and well-spoken rundown of how to handle these engines, and I wish I could pay you back in kind! Thanks again

I can't get enough of these videos. I truly appreciate you. I've worked on so many cars for so many years but never got any deeper than removing heads to replace a head gasket. Seeing a motor come together in detail from scratch has given me so much insight and I truly appreciate your effort in making these. Ignore the negative people. I wouldn't even mention them in the videos. Just ignore them and delete the comments. Damn haterz and self glorifying critics. Please keep doing what you are doing. You are one of few mechanics that I would say I would trust every word if you said my car needed such and such. Genuine guy.

AKingRecordings That is so very nice of you. One of my goals is to help people understand so when they do take their car in for work they cannot be given a bunch of BS with fancy words. The more you understand the more you can protect yourself. Sometimes the critics have a point, but I still delete negative and nasty comments.

Hi Pete, So you have me hooked on your videos. I am now a Pete and motor addict, only 3 weeks away from rehab:O). I sent you a note a day or so ago on another of your earlier series. Anyway, something you might share with your readers is the use of a good shop vac to help retrieve nuts, bolts, washers etc. dropping into cavities/places they are not supposed to be. I use a piece of hose, could be heater hose, gas hose etc. duct taped to the end of my shop vac. hose. The vac hose will often retrieve whatever you dropped. You will need to get into the vac to retrieve your parts, but that is easier than pulling an engine back down. I have dropped things down spark plug holes and have been able to get them out, Hemi type cylinder heads are great for this. Seems like things drop while you are trying to cover all the holes, and whatever you drop goes down a hole. MUST BE PHYSICS:o) Or, FM :O) I don't mean to blab on and on but you are quit amazing and its great to talk to a motor head like myself. Been doing this as a hobby since my first engine in HS in 1970. Growing up in the muscle car era makes it hard to ever get away, not that I would ever want to. Keep up the great videos, there are none better! Gary

Great Videos! That engine looks incredible, and I'm sure it will be an awesome performer. I am very jealous! You said 10 in-lb for your carb torque spec, but I think you meant 10 ft-lb. A trick I learned for paper carb gaskets is to spray them with WD-40 and let it soak in before you put them on. It helps keep the gaskets from sticking to the manifold when you remove the TB/carb. (Works very well for internal carb gaskets - fuel bowls or metering plates.) I know you probably used the 12 point bolts on your TBs for aesthetics, but if you have to remove the TBs a lot, you can "waller" out the aluminum threads in the intake. Studs and nuts would be better. But since they are TBs and not carbs, you won't have to remove them over and over for tuning. THAT ENGINE IS A WORK OF ART!!!!

Just wanted to say thanks for your videos! This one in particular is going to come in handy when I install the electronic throttle bodies I'm rewiring for my M120. Unlike on your engine, the throttle bodies on the M120 mount on either side of the intake manifold, so it looks like having high tack will come in handy for keeping everything aligned when I'm putting it back together.

Hey Pete, I just finished part 10 of the Cobra build from part 1. I just had to take a few minutes to say thank you. You don't just put together good videos with coherent information, but you love the details and that makes watching it extra special. Don't apologise for the complex stuff, it helps give a full picture. I'm a complete novice but I know a lot more now than I did before watching your videos. In the intake manifold theory video you kinda forgot to explain how different octane level fuel reacts in the chamber and what compression has to do with it. It was funny cause that was supposed to be one of your main points. I also wondered if putting a supercharger could affect the valve closing speed, or have enough force to counter the spring returning to closed, at least enough to fudge your numbers? Hey, I could go on forever with the questions, but the main thing was to say thanks for your work, and don't stop!
@PetesGarage
@PetesGarage 8 жыл бұрын
+Philip M Those are great questions Philip, thank you very much. A supercharger can speed up the valves since it is creating positive pressure. It is definitely a consideration when deciding to put one on. I'm working on a dyno video and I will talk about octane...great idea! Thank you for watching. I will always try to provide the best content that seems relevant to me.

Pete, I was also wondering, what would you do to clean the inside of the plenum/intake. It's plastic and also has the fuel rail and injectors. There is oil mist residue from the ccv and like a crusty oily dust. The inlet valves are spotless thankfully. I didn't really want to take off the throttle body and don't want to compromise the injectors. Many thanks Peter in the UK.

Really enjoy your videos, picking up ideas in every one! I use fine or 'second cut' files to clean up sealing surfaces, preferably using the draw filing method. The files are fine and smooth enough to give a very clean surface. Personally, while I do make frequent use of products to seal/stick down gaskets, I run the bead around the middle of the sealing surface as doing it to the inner or outer edge will extrude any excess and it'll bleed around the outside or be drawn into the inside of the engine. When using an engine stand, and why wouldn't you, just rotate the engine so the rocker cover is horizontal - makes it much easier as you're not trying to hold the gasket and cover in place while getting the bolts started. Oh, throttle bodies look great :-)
@PetesGarage
@PetesGarage 9 жыл бұрын
+GordonWG1 Awesome ideas....thank you for sharing with us. I use a special gasket for the rocker cover and it does not need any sealant. I am making another video about putting those on. Thank you so much my friend

Tip: Use the Permatex super tack on the valve cover itself and fit the gasket onto the valve cover, semi permanently. Then, if you need to remove the valve cover for whatever reason the gasket is usually perfectly reuseable to just pop the valve cover back on and done.

Are those Holley throttle bodies? Man, you're putting together a really clean engine. I had a tiny speck of dust in a cam journal when I rebuilt a motorcycle. The cam wouldn't turn. .0002mm clearance spec. Cleanliness is paramount.
@PetesGarage
@PetesGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Guns Cars and Digits Those are Accel throttle bodies 1050 CFM. A spec of .0002mm sounds a bit too tight. That is only 0.0000078740 inches. Perhaps the spec is .02 which is 20 microns or 0.00078740 inches. Either way you can never be too clean. I've never seen an engine fail for lack of FM...lol

2000 CFM on a sub 400" SBF?!!! That plenum should definitely get all the air it could ever want... wicked throttle response. MPFI on a dual plane.. You are right about my clearance BTW. I dug up the specs. .028 to .062 mm. YFZ450R. I've never had a cam go tight like that before. I thought I warped the head somehow.

Hi Pete! Always great to see a new video! Those head gaskets are real nice, better than what come in a standard Fel-Pro Rebuild kit. Are they Fel-Pro? As an aside you might consider touching on thread lubricant or anti-seize when using stainless steel fasteners in aluminum and also how it affects torque. Thanks a million for your videos, they are really good!
@PetesGarage
@PetesGarage 10 жыл бұрын
The valve cover gaskets are not Fel-Pro. Anti seize is a good idea with stainless in aluminum. Thanks for mentioning that. Since this is a low torque application it won't affect it much, but on a torque and angle application it will for sure shift the torque curve. Thanks Bill

Once you get the carb on, tape over the openings until you are ready to mount the air cleaners. You are so careful about not dropping things into the motor don't stop now, also tape over the other open holes, like the distributer opening, again a good place to drop things. One other thing. Why are you waiting until the manifold is mounted to prepare the manifold to carb surface. If you do it off the motor no shavings or other debris can cause a problem...same thing with chasing the threads...do it off the motor and you don't need tape on the bottom and then you can use air to blow all the bits off.

This might be a silly question and I apologize in advance for my ignorance.. but why do you need the spacer between the throttle body and the manifold again? You say it's to vacuum seal it so there is no leaks... but if you bolt the throttle body down tight enough wouldn't that me enough for a seal? How can enough air get between two metal parts that are bolted tight together? Thank you for all your videos! I love them!

I have watched these engine rebuild videos and found them to be quite interesting. But there are some things that I would like to know more about and that have not been covered in much depth so far. I would like to know what options there are if one wants to convert a carburetor engine to ECU / fuel injection engine. I guess pits for knock sensors, a temperature sensor or also maybe an oil pressure sensor must be drilled into the block. Somehow camshaft position sensor(s) must be installed, especially if one wants to use sequential fuel injection I guess. Some injection systems use an intake manifold pressure sensor to regulate the fuel injection timings, other use mass air flow sensors. It would be interesting to know how such a fuel injection system should be tuned for any given type of small block or big block engine and how the presence of a compressor or a given number of turbo chargers would affect the tuning. I've heard of a "DYI" fuel injection system called megasquirt, but I guess that there must be other systems as well. It would also be interesting to know a little more about turbo chargers and compressors and what are the caveats of using these type of devices with an engine. I've heard a lot of stories of people damaging their engines after fitting them with such devices. There must be a way to come up with something more... sustainable. Maybe this is not a popular thing among hotrodders but if I got to build a really nice engine setup, I would also be interested in installing emission reduction systems into it and fit one or several catalytic converters (so as to give the exhaust more air flow) into it. I guess it should be possible without losing too much horse power. It would be interesting to know how much horse power penalty there would be to installing such equipment.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have the throttle motor and tps on the throttle body closest to the camera because the air passages are closer to center instead of the very back? I'm assuming you chose the back one for cosmetic purposes and I don't know the impact of only having the air passages in the back.
@PetesGarage

That is a great question. It came down to data and experience. I found that there is no difference from front to back. The idle and performance is the same. I did choose the back to make the wiring more streamlined. It works well.

***** Thought so. Sets that sucker off. I've seen people who believe blue is just blue and Ford blue is no different than a run of the mill blue. This video obviously proves that wrong. You can tell when something is just blue and when something is Ford blue. Also I have to say Ford blue is a much better looking blue than the blue Pontiac used on their engines. I got the privilege of modding a 62 Falcon. The guy wanted a PCV system to replace the road tube (I tried to talk him out of it and into keeping it original). It was a pretty neat little car and engine to play with. Nothing spectacular but was fun seeing the old engine.

@PetesGarage

There is no real set up difference between one and two throttle bodies. You have to shut down and seal of the idle motor on one of the throttle bodies since only one is needed. Other than that it's just a difference in air volume with incredible throttle response.

Wondering around KZbin and found your build vid's, got to say you do great work and you really know your stuff, I could learn a ton of stuff from you. But I have to tell you that I cringe every time I see you glue gaskets on with high-tack or RTV, especially when it comes to carbs. I used to install the evergreen type assembly line garbage engines, about two a week, from a short block and heads up, then I changed jobs to a quality place as a shop manager, where our shop did our own machining and builds. When I was assembling or talking to my guys about it, I always told them "use a gasket or a sealer, but not both, the gasket is the sealer". A little silicone in the corners of the oil pans and intakes, maybe a little over the seams of the front covers to the block like fords, and usually for the intake ends., but if your going to glue them on you might as well just use silicon instead. The reason being, the gasket is designed to seal the surface, if it wont seal by it's self, then the surface is bad or the installation. And although the glue is not necessarily a bad thing (as long as there are no small passages that it could plug like in a carb), if you ever need to take it apart again it just makes a bigger mess that you need to clean up. The only reason I ever used a glue/sealer on a gasket was to hold it in place while I bolted it together, and that was seldom and never on aluminum parts. Just my nickels worth of opinion, that's worth about two cents. :-D Keep up the good work brother, going to to go watch some more of your vids.
@PetesGarage
@PetesGarage 6 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent point. I never use any sealer on carb gaskets before taking it to the dyno because you do take the carb off several times to jet it. I just do it on final assembly as a "just in case" type of thing. Thank you Kenneth

i have found a fuel injected ITB kit to suit oval rectangle ports. I'm trying to decide on cam size, I'm running 4.000 stroke on a forged crank was going to go stroker but for circuit racing I'm only allowed 6.0L. the racing involves roll starts so I'm thinking a bigger cam as off the line is not a big deal. looking at something around 2200rpm-6500rpm. will be going all forged internals as billet is just too expensive for the HP i will be running/ looking at around 700hp at the fly. Duration @ .050 (intake 234/ exhaust 249) Lobe Separation 109* intake centre line is 103* and valve lift intake .573/exhaust .558
