I'm so glad I made the change from acrylic to PTEG. Acrylic tubing is just a nightmare to deal with. Everytime I swung my hammer in my system, the tubes would just shatter and water would splash everywhere ruining my components. Now since I switched to PTEG, I can swing my hammer all i want and the only thing that happens is the tube changes to an oblong shape.

JamesHD1990 But harder to work with in some ways. I've never heard of Acrylic shattering inside a build, but I have seen people fail multiple times to get acrylic routing right, which takes time in the build process. For a personal pet project, time is free, but if you're doing it for a job, I'd rather do it the slightly faster and easier way.

First ever KZbin post but I thought I would add my 2Cents, lol. From what I have read PETG has a max temp of 65C to 70C (149F to 158F) Whereas acrylic is 70C (158F) with short time maximum of 90C (194F). I know the temps are close but my mitx build runs about 75C -78C (167F-172F) under full load due to overclocking. Also, acrylic has a light transmission of 92% where PETg is 88%, does that not make acrylic clearer, ie more translucent?

Doing all my research before investing and I've pretty much spent a couple of days on your youtube account watching video after video, I think you might be the greatest source of information for water cooling on the internet. Simple question, when shaping PETG, is it ok to use a bending kit designed for acrylic. Downunder (here in AU) water cooling is relatively small, and so there is far less options for buying parts.

PETG: Polyethylene terephthalate (aka. PET, PETE, PETG) is a plastic resin of the polyester family that is used to make beverage, food and other liquid containers, as well as for some other thermoforming applications. PETG is a clear amorphous thermoplastic that can be injection molded or sheet extruded. It can be colored during processing.

Some chemistry: PETG smells when its cut because it contains a benzine ring. Benzine is well known for being 'aromatic', and although benzine itself has a 'sweet' smell, when combined with other atoms as a prat of a molecule, the smell can change. This is also amplified by the ester functional group on the ends of each unit, and esters are also known for their smells as they are used in sweets, such as pear drops.

jay i think you forgot to mention the water permeability that PETG has, which is, to me, the most important drawback of PETG. not a big deal though as long as you do maintenance at least every year. all other issues can be solved with some elbow grease. but there is no way to avoid water vapor escaping through the tube. i've heard PETG stains faster with dyes but ive never seen it as i don't use dyes.

Hey, Jayz, Keep up the good work, man. I have a question here, I am noticing that video card feeder blocks (EK, etc), and fittings (Bitspower, etc) seem to feed the card blocks in parallel flow splitting fashion. Does it matter if they are fed by flow splitting or daisy chained? I'm about a year out, maybe a little less, from doing a custom loop in my system, and am wondering if there is a temp difference between splitting or daisy chaining. A lot of what you have said to date makes me think this is not the case, or if it is the temp diff is so low as to not really matter. Also, on the subject of flow splitting. I have a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming G1 WiFi Black Edition. This has the water blocks on the VRM stacks. The blocks appear to be connected to each other with 1/4" or so, and I do plan to be using 1/2" ID acrylic tubing to reduce fittings costs, while still having a rigid system. How would I best deal with this? Would a flow-splitter of some kind be the answer? Thanks,

I’m looking to build my first water cooled PC and learning so much from these videos. I’ve seen comparisons between Acrylic and PETG but wonder why Polycarbonate isn’t considered? Polycarbonate has higher thermal properties compared to PETG and has higher impact resistance compared to Acrylic and PETG. My concern with PETG is that it starts to soften around 60 deg C, which I imagine the fluids temps in a loop to reach near this. With thermal cycles over the years, wouldn’t this slowly warp the PETG?

I am going to be that guy, thermal shocking most things can lead to failure. Being in a hot state would mean the material has been expended, suddenly cooling it would make it shrink and as such would create cracks (if the material isn't ductile).

Not sure if anyone posted this in the comments yet, but I would suggest trying a pipe cutter from homedepot for the PETG. No mess, cuts fast, and cleaner edge. Not sure how well it works with PETG, but worth a try. Its just a small carbide disk the rotates around the pipe/tube and you tighten it gradually each time around until it cuts through.

You also cannot use certain coolants with PETG -- namely anything containing ethylene glycol, also called ethane-diol or ethanediol (automotive antifreeze, Mayhem's XT-1, Phobya ZuperZero, Feser, among others). Propylene glycol is also called propane-diol or propanediol and can be used with PETG tubing -- Koolance, Primochill, XS-PC, Fluid XP+. Mayhem's X1 and Pastels use a glycerol and distilled water base, and as far as I can find, there's no concern with using that and PETG.

Since I know you don't care what it is, PETG is Polyethylene terephthalate the glycol monomer swapped out for another to change crystallization properties and lowers the melting point, it also makes it easier to dye the plastic during production.

Various types of PET are very useful and tend to be very tough and durable. As they age though these qualities are gradually lost. Just something to be aware of. In a computer case they are well protected from harsh conditions but in other applications exposure to sunlight, salt water, certain chemicals, or extreme temperatures will dramatically accelerate degradation and eventually the material will disintegrate. Should be okay inside of a case for the useful life of a PC though.

Maybe you should get a motorised file for nail care - I dare say the principles are the same when smoothing PETG.

Are there any advantages to using actual rubber tubing Besides ease of use?

It's safer. PETG gets soft at rather low temperatures and acrylic can have cracks that expand over time.

Would the vibrations on pumps or something cause fractures on the acrylic or something? or is it just tempered glass?

I'm not sure about the pumps vibration would cause it. But if you're making a small itx build with acrylic tubing to bring to lan parties, it could be a major problem if you drove over a pot hole while transporting it. I do know that if the water does get to warm enough acrylic has a much higher chance of cracking(usually caused my a hair line crack that wasn't seen)
