Petra has many amazing songs from both of the singers. You want more grit you will probably enjoy John Schlitt more formerly lead singer of head east. He joined Petra in the mid 80s and sang for them until they said farewell in 2005. Some great songs are Beyond belief, he came he saw he conquered, All fired up, praying man, no doubt, dance, creed, and many more. Great songs from this lead singer Greg X Volts are like Grave Robber, more power to ya, beat the system among many more. Hope you check out more Petra. Other great Christian classic rock bands are Resurrection Band, X-sinner, holy soldier, barren cross, and white cross

I became a Christian in 1983 and Petra was my absolute favorite. We used to travel all over MI to see them and did get to know these very godly musicians. The best song I'd love for you to listen is " More Power to Ya"

More Power to Ya is a great song. Tim Mcgraw did a cover of it that was pretty good but not as good as the original;. Liked Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows off that same album, one of my other favorites.

I've been a fan of Petra for almost 40 years. I've also studied their music on my guitar. This is one of my most favorite song. Bob Hartman (songwriter and band founder) is an amazing guitarist.

I met my husband because of this band. We eventually went on to help them with promotions in the early 2000s. They won Grammy's in the 80s and 90s with newest lead singer John schlitt who has the wild rock voice....he was former lead singer for secular band Headeast. His story is pretty amazing...just God all the way around. He also now sings for The Jay Sekulow Band!

All of my teenage years occurred in the 1980's (graduated high school in '86). In the summer of 1984 one of my neighborhood friends asked if I'd be interested in going along with him to a Bible study. I went to it plus a few more. During this time I became familiar with a few Christian groups/artists during the praise and worship segment. Three of them were Petra, Sandi Patty, and Twila Paris. Skipping ahead many years later I was watching a Christian TV network show and one of the guests on the program was a singer that I never heard of before; Judy Jacobs. Hearing her perform Days of Elijah brought me to tears. It was so powerful. I immediately loved it. A couple of other favorites of mine are: 1) Petra - The Coloring Song 2) Michael W. Smith - Great is the Lord. Give them a listen. The lyrics are available as well.

I also graduated high school in 1986. I liked some of the earlier Petra, but it was a song or two here or there. I really got into them when John Schlitt joined them on the “Back To The Street” album, (tell me that album cover doesn’t scream “80s”!) LOL I liked Amy Grant, Mylon Lefevre, Carman, and the occasional song by Michael W. Smith, Russ Taff, Bryan Duncan, etc., (though I often found Michael W. Smith a tad too nasal in his signing, so I only really like a half dozen or so of his songs). But I was also an Iron Maiden fan…and someone introduced me to Barren Cross. Uh oh. They sounded enough like Maiden that they got my attention. Before then, I hadn’t a clue there were any Christian bands playing music like that! I was instantly hooked! LOL I dove into the harder side of Petra, adding onto that, the Heavenly Metal: Stryper, Whitecross, Shout, Holy Soldier, Bride, Scarlet Red, Bloodgood, X-Sinner, etc.; and I kept on listening until sometime in the 90s, when those bands kind of trickled off into obscurity as so many good bands did when the Grunge movement unfortunately had its way with Rock for a while. A prayer was literally answered when Petra put out their praise album! I had always thought Rock and praise made a good team. Most of those old bands are still in the rotation of my music and when one shuffles onto my playlist, it always makes me think of some very good times, at a very small church, with some very good friends, (several of which I still see or talk to regularly)! And…Stryper is still making new music regularly and it’s even harder Rock now than it ever was back then.

That’s early Petra. Greg X. Volz singing lead. They were more Contemporary Christian music back then. Smoother and more ‘radio friendly’. They transitioned into being a bit more Rock and less ‘Adult Contemporary’. If you want to hear a bit more ‘grit’, you’ll have to jump forward in Petra’s catalog to when John Schlitt took over lead vocals. “Back To The Street”, “All Fired Up”, “Somebody’s Gonna Praise His Name”, “Shakin’ The House”, “Jekyll & Hyde”, “Midnight Oil”, “Dance”, “He Came, He Saw, He Conquered”, “Seen and Not Heard”…are all songs with John Schlitt on lead vocals and have an edge of ‘grit’ to them.

Petra was started in 1972 (1972-2005), and Angel of Light was released on their Never Say Die album in 1981. They are one of the first Christian rock bands. They were also one of the biggest target by many anti rock music churches in those days. But their message of the Gospel has never changed. And talking about their grit? They have 33 years of gritty songs.

One of my little league teammates introduced me to Petra and the Rez. Band. In the early 80s with a cassette tape that had a Petra Album on one side and a Resurrection Band Album on the other. Sarah the 80s when no one got sued over copy write infringement. 😂😂😂 This one was new to me though so may have been an earlier song or later one. Those two bands lead the way to the Alternative Christian Music we have today.

Petra is the first Christian Rock band formed in 1972. Their name means "The Rock" as in "The Rock Jesus Christ". Petra is also the name of the Biblical city in the country of Jordan carved into rock featured in many documentaries and movies. This is the country rock era under Greg X Voltz as lead singer. But when John Schlitz became lead singer in mid 80s their music radically went heavier and even more radically Christian under Spiritual Warfare themes. They are the only Christian band respected in secular circles who never compromised and have memorabilia in Hard Rock Cafe. After being falsely accused of being satanic, they purposely recorded a back masking message before the song Judas Kiss that played backwards simply states "Wat are ya lookin' for the devil for when you outta be lookin' for the Lord?!" Petra PRAISE THE ROCK CRIES OUT is jammed out praise and worship songs and Psalms.

Greg X Voltz who is the lead singer of Petra at this time, he sang for them from 76 to 85. He was offered to be the lead singer in Reo Speedwagon in 76 but turned it down because of his Christianity and went to be the lead singer to Petra instead. His earlier years he shared the stage with Janis Joplin and Chicago.

Howdy! I'm pressed for time and will risk telling you things you know, and mayhaps duplicating other comments. The song you heard was from 1981, "Never Say Die", Petra's fourth album and best to date. I was really startled seeing them in concert where they played that effect you liked at 4:05, it was all dark except white lights shining in a fog cloud. Whoa! Petra went through several incarnations, 20 studio albums in 30 years. Lead guitarist and songwriter Bob Hartman was the constant factor. Several members did a reunion tour, and if you search KZbin (I won't post a link, those get deleted by the system) for this exact phrase, "Classic Petra 03 - Angel Of Light (Back To The Rock Live)" you'll get something that is true to the original but has a bit more grit. Watch out for those things recorded on cell phones, the one I'm telling you about is professional.

The newer version when they revisited it has more of the modern grit. However the timeframe that this song originally released was on par for reaching the same “rock” sound that was on par to challenge secular groups like blue oyster cult.

Petra actually wanted more “grit” in their sound, and had it live. But the record producers of the time thought going any heavier would be too much for the Christian music market.
