John Schlitt was Head East’s lead singer until 1980 when John left the band due to a terrible cocaine addiction. I only mention it because John is open about it and he turned his life completely around with his wife Dorla by his side and dedicated his life to God. He was asked to join Petra as their lead singer in 1986. He is an awesome singer and a great man.

I was coming to the comments to see if anyone else had mentioned John Schlitt and Head East before Petra. I only a few yrs ago found out that he was the one singing their song "There's Never Been Any Reason" and I always liked that song, but didn't know who sang it.

John Schlitt and John Lawry also perform occasionally with the Jay Sekulow Band for fundraising purposes for the ACLJ. Other members include fellow Christian artists from DC Talk and John Elefante, formerly of Kansas, and also a Christian. Petra did a 50th-year tour about a yr ago. They and Stryper have been around for decades and can still draw crowds. To give an idea of their influence and character, Petra was a major influence on independent, classically trained vocalist Daniel Vasconcelos (aka Dan Vasc) & John Schlitt's vocals first inspired him to pursue singing as a career. Dan took a shot several years ago at emailing John Schlitt about doing a collaboration and performing one of their songs. They graciously accepted and did their song "Beyond Belief" together. Dan has stated before that it was the greatest highlight for him. You can tell by the expression on his face of absolute joy how much that meant to him. If you haven't checked out any of Dan Vasc's work, I highly recommend him. He's a mixed bag of unexpected surprises and varied skills in that he can do everything from folk, Opera, & musicals (acting included) to 80s rock & metal, plus conversions of songs to metal like his Witcher series covers. His version of Amazing Grace is still my favorite version and his KZbin channel reached 1 million subscribers in May, 2024. Try out his Nessun Dorma, Hallelujah Chorus (One Man Choir), Phantom of the Opera covers (especially Music of the Night), etc. He also does great covers of Iron Maiden, Rhapsody, Sabaton, etc. Plus, he's got a great sense of humor.😉

Hi Aaliyah, I'm a 65 year old Catholic 🙏and tried to treat others like I've been treated but I am divorced with 3 kids that I raised as a single father and I like Rock-n-Roll, I was a musician and a singer and I'm aware that the Catholic church looks down on divorce but my ex cheated on me multiple times. That being said 😁I glad your branching out with your music👍there's a lot of music out there and you should hear it all

One of the pioneers of Christian rock, their was a lot of Christian rock bands before them. Through the 1960s and early 1970s, Petra first album came out in 1974.

John has an incredible vocal range. Also, now that you've reacted to one of their softer ballads, it would be great to see your reaction to one of their hard rock songs, like This Means War, or Jekyll and Hyde. You gotta hand it to a band who's been going for over 50 years, and still even has a few concerts scheduled this year, in 2024!

I had ghe chance to meet John many years ago when Petra came and played at an intimate venue. I was still using a walker after major back surgery so I was lucky enough to get front row seats with my wife and after the concert he came over and sat down with us to see how I was doing and he spent a while just talking to us about life. After we talked for a while he offered to pray with us that God would heal me and continue to provide for us. My wife was so quiet the entire time because she grew listening to Petra and now John was sitting next to her holding her hand as we talked and prayed. It a wonderful memory that although a small gesture at the time is something we've never forgotten.

So many good memories of them growing up. Even a concert on the :Beat the System: tour.. It is Finished is flat out my favorite song they do. The bands formation is a wonderful story.

"It is Finished" is a powerful Petra song about Christ's crucifixion, with His last words on the Cross. "Prayer" is way too soft for Christian Rock or "Heaven Metal", but I thank you for this!🪨🎵

@@AaliyahCapili Btw, the music video to "It is Finished" are scenes from a movie that are visually powerful, in sync with the powerful song, and other reactors have watched it. So I hope you will, too! 🤞

I'm a fan of Petra, and would love to see reactions to more of their stuff. But "better" is quite subjective, that being more based on your personal music taste, and I think misses the point of the song - its a worship ballad skillfully written, composed, and performed and written to put us in a prayerful mindset.
