She crossed genres easily and often. I can't think of another singer who could belt rock and also sing with such crystalline delicacy as Linda. My vote for greatest all-around female singer ever. And, God, she was beautiful.

Hall-of-fame-Linda Ronstadt. Stevie Nicks once said that when she was starting she just wanted to sing like Linda so much she manage to sound like her until she came to her senses. Linda is highly respected and admired by her colleagues. Somehow the media has forgotten her after all those hits she spawned in every genre she tried. Hi Petra, Linda was part of the burgeoning new wave of music coming out of California in the 70’s called country / rock and it’s very very big here in the US. Linda later became much more than just rock, country folk or pop music, her voice was very versatile and could adapt to other genres of music such as opera or Broadway musicals which she was very successful at, a Legend in every sense of the word.

Petra, your first impressions of Ms. Ronstadt were spot on! Immediately, you grasped her wit, down-to-earth style, the mesmerizing quality of her voice, and her love for ballads (She, too, would've loved to have sung only them in a concert; she knew she had to insert songs like "Heat Wave" and "You're No Good" so the audience wouldn't fall asleep like you said you were!). Your expression when she sang that first note was priceless. Her Tucson twang, little-girl speaking voice gives no forewarning to a virgin ear of what is to come. I highly recommend you watch the 2019 documentary on her musical career-it's like a beautiful buffet that will give you a taste of her extraordinary and prolific career. You mentioned you were pregnant. Well, despite the fact that Ms. Ronstadt had many a nice boyfriends (She describes herself as a "serial monogamist!"), she never married. However, she did adopt two children in the 90's that prompted her to record an album called "Dedicated to the One I Love," in which she took classic rock songs and sang them as soft lullabies. Once again, she"ll lull you to sleep in a good way. All the best to you, Petra, and thank you for introducing Ms. Ronstadt to this generation. She really was quite something as a singer, and still is as a human being coping magnificently with a nasty, debilitating condition known as supra nuclear palsy.

"Lose Again" from that album is the song that shows off pretty much everything that she could do. The live performance from Atlanta in 1977 is the best singing by a woman I've ever heard. The Linda Ronstadt experience in concert was almost operatic. It was the glory of the human voice. Not the way Whitney, Celine, and Mariah show off, but just the beauty, the volume/power and the complete finesse without really any thought to technique which was just inherent to her singing. Her singing was simple. She didn't need to melisma us to death.
