100% about the fishing net. I actually leave mine on the bank and every outings others are asking if they can use it... Same goes with prepping and pre-tying gears that's such an under-rated and yet it saves a lot of frustration and time !

I always offer to net fish for people. It eats into my fishing time, but it's worth the effort. People assume I'm doing it to help them, but I do it for the fish :)

Yes, people fish for all kinds of reasons. On the one extreme you have snaggers who just greedily take piles of fish, on the other you have fly guys who clip the tips off their hooks, because all they want to see is the take.

Hi Petr. Do you think the type of mesh on the landing net makes a difference whether the fish gets an eye infection? Should we be using rubber nets? What about in lakes? K

Salmon have tough skin and heavy slime coat, only the eyes are easily damaged by abrasion. Mesh type is less important than it is for trout. I use rubber nets and I don't touch the fish unless I have to, but any net is better than no net.

I don't even know what it is. Random net I found in the river a couple of years ago. It's not big enough for chinook, but great for coho. Canadian Tire has a good selection of nets, I like Lucky Strike, shallow bags work best on a river.

Got one hatchery jack on the float, one wild doe on spinner, my friend got a stud of a hatchery of course. Just chum yesterday ( in mission) i dont get much time to fish these days , really want to bring some coho home

Hi Peter. Springs and cohos are plentiful this year perhaps tackle the retention aspect of it please. We all know the daily limit for each are that you fish but what about possession limits? You just mentioned here catching a hundred fishes, are we allowed to have that much fish in our possession at home? Please teach us how to interpret this.

There is an annual limit of 10 Chinooks and 10 hatchery steelhead. There is no annual limit for Coho, chum, or pink when they are open. You are allowed one daily limit of 4 salmon from all waters and open species combined, but if you are away on a trip you are allowed to have up to two daily limits caught on separate days. You are only allowed to process fish at your permanent residence, but how many you have in your freezer at home is up to you. Our Salmon limits are very generous in my opinion.

There is plenty of water to fish. Out near Mission you have the Stave and Chehalis. For me the Vedder is right next door, so that's where I go. The salmon season is over now and steelhead will start running soon. Many of hte lakes are stocked every year, check out Go Fish B.C. for the lists.

Your videos are a must see and very educational thank you ! However, I've been fishing for steelhead most of my life and now live on the Island the past few years. Im very surprised by the size of gear fisherman use on the water. 25/30 grams with 2/0 hooks in only a few feet of water? Why? I've caught plenty of coho/chinook /pinks /cut throat and yes steelhead( Campbell River) fishing 8-11 grams with # 2-6 hooks and 8-12 lead. My presentation is stealth while my neighbours are clunky and scare fish on water entry. I control the drift with my centerpin, while my neighbours throw out the line so far it's impossible for drift control....So my question is why the need for such large tackle when fishing slow drifts and only in a few feet of water? Were there whales in BC rivers at one point ? Thanks again and I would enjoy fishing with you. !

I never use 2/0 hooks. My go to is #1, sometimes if I'm fishing big pieces of roe, I go up to 1/0. Certainly I can catch fish on lighter gear, but I like to bring them in hard and fast to release without much stress. Got a 23 pound chinook this morning, was glad to have 12 pound leader on. I’m curious what your thoughts are on missed strikes. Myself, and many times folks around me will be plagued with missed strikes. Beads do seem to have a less reliable hookup ratio compared to roe, but even with roe I find myself missing a hit completely or getting one head shake in. For years I’ve been trying to gather info on getting a better hookup - landing ratio. There seem to be so many theories out there!

It's just part of the game. Some people have better reflexes than others, but with roe, you can also set the hook too quickly. Everybody has missed bites. Coho are challenging for many reasons, the soft bites are one of those reasons.

This was filmed on a Monday late afternoon, so not many people around. lt pays to hike around, many hidden little gems on the Vedder. I don't mind fishing with people, as long as it's not very crowded, but I look for secluded spots to film these videos because it's very strange to do a monologue with people around.

Size is pretty much irrelevant. I just use whatever I find in the river. Too small and they're hard to open, so "medium" I guess. Don't need heavy gear for coho, but it's good to have something sturdy for chinooks and chum.

The whole point of this educational series was to try and steer people in a good direction. I don't expect to change those set in their ways, but new people on the river are always looking for solid advice. Yeah, I went by the lower river a couple of times and the amount of deliberate snagging I saw was appalling. It's not like that everywhere, was fishing with 15 people on a run this evening, not one float rip by anyone, just laughs and fish.

Hey Peter really really appreciate for all your videos and tips. Its my first year at the Vedder river and my first 2 trips were a learning curve for me. After I watched your video, i followed your advices on bring extra rod with spoon along with my floating set up today. I was able to land a Coho on a spoon after switching my float set up in the morning and retrieve as fast as i could. Thanks to you, i have landed my first hatchery coho! Peter your the only youtuber doing it right... There are many reasons why, and I think you understand all of them. All of these wannabe fishing celebs need to take a page out of your book for they know not what they do. Too many youtubers are of the "look what I did, bro," with total disregard with where they do it and even go as far as defending the act... The reality is, they plague things into a canal fishery, that even they can no longer fish because the regulations are an utter joke, if you get my drift.

The possession limit for all salmon from all waters is twice the daily limit. You cannot possess more than 8 salmon in total, “except for salmon that are at your ordinary residence.”

To be clear, you have to be ready to provide proof of an overnight stay if you have more than 4 salmon in your cooler in the car. If someone thinks that an officer can't tell one day old fish from 2 day old fish, they're in for a big surprise. I have an entire video just on regulations, but it's a few years old now, I'll re-do it for hte next season.

How many fish are you missing due to having a bead (with no hook) 12" above your hook with roe... Makes no sense...

I'm not expecting to catch fish on that bead. I slide it up and out of the way when I'm fishing roe, then I put it back where it belongs to fish bead only. Sometimes I get a bite and the bead is 6" further down, that's when I know I missed a fish and might want to try beads only.

What you say is true for many people. The salmon they get from the river are much more expensive than store bought. On the other hand they were not harvested in gill nets by corporate fleets and it beats a day at the mall. My reality is a little different. I live 2 minutes form the river and often catch several fish before I lose a $1 hook. That's because I don't dredge the bottom. I end up fishing spots by myself about 30% of the time because I've learned to pull fish out of marginal spots where nobody else really wants to fish.

You're Salmon resource is finite. Here on the west coast of Scotland, all of the rivers have sufferred a collapse in stocks of Atlantic Salmon, on a huge scale, its almost a waste of time, fishing for them and the few that do get caught, have to be returned. The question now is whether it is morally acceptable to continue to try and catch a fish on the verge of extinction. Its not got to that stage in the Pacific North West and I hope it never does, you have been warned.

I'm from a country where the salmon were wiped out at the start of the industrial revolutions, some 200 years ago. A big part of what I'm truing to do with my channel is to encourage conservation and proper fish handling. If we don't take care of these fisheries, they will indeed disappear.
