Nice video, I have a question: Have you ever tried freezing caviar for long-term storage? I gave it a try this year, but after slowly defrosting it, I noticed it had developed a strong fishy smell. I think this might be due to the fat in the caviar oxidizing. While it’s still edible, the smell makes it hard to enjoy, so I’m considering using it as bait instead. I’m not sure what I did wrong-I cured it almost the same way you did. Maybe I should have used a vacuum sealer during the freezing process. What do you think?

Being new to center pinning, but not new to fly fishing, (I've casted flys for more than 40 years,) including "drifting" rigs ("chuck n duck"). I am new to learning the hand sequence needed for casting a mono loaded center pin reel. It's no more difficult than learning to cast a fly line (lolol) The understanding of this reels function is paramount to success. Center pinning is "drift fishing" with a bobber! Not new to drifting or float fishing. Saying that as it may, float center pinning in its simplest explanation is "Free spool drifting" Not new or indicative of "fly fishing" only! But it is an extremely productive method for fishing a river (current) for Steelhead and other andromous fish. Open spooling can be achieved with most any (almost) spinning, bait casting or fly rod and reel combination. What is required is that a rig 2:10 can "give" line without tension... It's a presentation of a bait during a drift, suspended from a float, to create a "dead" drift . Or, in other words, a drift that matches the current speed. The "float" (indicator or bobber) depth is set, either by slip bobber or stationary bobber, 1 1/2 times the depth of the water on the main line, usually with split shot aligned in sequence by size largest up top to smallest down the leader, depending on current speed, with a bait attached to the end of the tippet or tapered leader. The premise of this fly reel adaptation, is to give a "dead" drift without the need to pick up line after each drift with a float, but to be able to reel-up copus amounts of line (usually mono) and then be able to "throw" the line off of the "open" center pinned reel the distance needed like a fly line without any false casts. Looking at a center pin reel, and you'll see one side of the reel seat is missing! This adaptation allows one to pull line off a spool without the reel interference or drag. Also, for not having to manage bunched fly lines on deck or gathered about the feet. It's a situation where the hand opposite the hand used to hold the rod, controls the line off of the reel during the "toss" The line then "free spools" for the length of the run. Reeled back quickly and "tossed" again, and again, and again! They call Musky, "the fish of ten thousand casts" Steelhead is a fish 9,999. Great Casts!

Hey since steelhead season is coming up since I am just under 16 and a resident of bc do I need to still buy a steelhead tag and for the freds derby it says I need to show that I either have a status card or a tag but if I am under 16 does that still apply

No you do not need a tag or a license until your 16th birthday. They might ask for proof of age, but I doubt they would. Not a lot of juniors enter, good for you. and good luck. I've been out 3 times for steelhead, not even a bite so far, though I have caught coho along the way.

pretty late on this comment but is that the 11 foot LJ centerpin rod 8-17? curious if it is, wondering if it would it be responsible to use that rod for springs and steelhead. Just asking cause I have used some 8-17 rods and it takes me a while to land average sized springs. Thanks

The rod is plenty strong enough for big chinooks. I've landed many in the 25 pound range and the fights are normally 2 minutes or less. The biggest steelhead I've landed on this rod was 15 pounds, but that particular fish was tired from migrating and getting hooked previously. This is my favorite all round rod, but I do have to say that it's not a tough piece of equipment. I've broken 2 of them already, but that's because I get into hundreds of fish every year and I'm not gentle with my gear.

@petrhermanadventures9509 Ай бұрын
@@ВладимирГрачев-ы2и when steelhead fishing in low temperatures, it's an advantage not to have to mess with loose roe. You can keep the gloves on. A roe bag will stay on much longer too, and steelheading involves a lot more casting into odd spots. The other advantage is that one skein of eggs will give you dozens of days worth of bait. That's not a concern for me, but some people don't have piles of roe to play with.

I'v been fishing the better part of my steelhead career in Ontario and other parts of Canada. Most BC steel headers continue to use the same setup as they would for salmon. Large # 1 /2 hooks , heavy leader line. Change up the presentation, by using much smaller hooks , with a more stealth presentation. The results will be rewarded.
@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 Ай бұрын
The fish we are targeting have just spent 3 years in the ocean with practically zero chance of seeing a hook. They are not hook shy and they are not leader shy. You are right, they will bite little stuff, including tiny flies, but they'll also take big presentations without thinking about it twice. Stealth tactics work better later in the season when it's mostly wild fish left that have been caught a couple of times already and are more wise to the danger of a hook.

The real problem here is that BC should require courses similar to CORE for hunting. When I was 13 year old, growing up in Europe, there was mandatory classes and test to get fishing license. Hey Petr thanks for the tips about the colour of the belly of the fish, quick question, how would you suggest to set your drag , how should it feel if you pulled the line out of the reel?
@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 Ай бұрын
that's not a simple question. I mostly centerpin, so the drag is constantly varied with finger pressure. I like to set my drag a bit on the light side so that the vigorous head shakes right at the start of the fight don't snap the leader, then I tighten a bit as the fish gets tired so that I can reel in the fish without exhausting it. I try to make the fish go anaerobic rather than exhausted so that they recover faster on release. It varies by species too, coho are smaller so I just horse them in, chum and chinook take a bit more finesse. Fighting fish well takes many years of learning. As for how it should feel, like you're using 5 to 10 pounds of force to pull line off the reel.

I switched to bobber fishing because I was just getting so many fish on the jig. Once I switched back to bobber, the bite instantly died. A lot of guys say you won't see a bobber go down....not understandung that?? Any idea why no bite ever on the bobber fishing?? I've changed depth, presentation, big bead, small bead, roe etc.
@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 Ай бұрын
Coho love jigs. You should be nailing fish on the float as well though. It's a matter of details the fish hold in specific lanes and at specific depths and it takes some figuring out. Sometimes a small adjustment makes a big difference. Coho bite the bead very gently and let it go quickly so often you only get a little twitch of the float. Chum are more aggressive in that regard. Maybe try a shorter leader and a split shot about 4 inches above the bead, this will make the setup more sensitive.

To me chum is the most valuable salmon. Their roes are the best among all species, the roe front one chum hen could give you $200 worth of caviar, dump them in boiled water, stir, eggs will be released from the skein, rinse under cold water until all membrane bits are washed away, marinade with your choice of flavor, jar them, freeze and enjoy any time of the year….due to chum season is later October and November, it’s possible to preserve them within freezing, I like the Japanese way - salt cure for 4 days ( one pound of salt per fish), then brine with cold water to remove some of the salt content, then hang outside air dry for at least 10 days, portion and vacuum seal leave them in fridge, when grilled on charcoal, taste better than fresh coho.
